How can two people be so opposite and similar at the same time? Such as two friends who act different but have the same past. Dally and Johnny from the book “ The Outsiders” by S.E Hinton are two examples of people who are completely opposite but share common traits and actions. Johnny and Dally are uniquely similar that both share neglectful and abusive parents. Dally was born and raised on the streets. He never had a good influence growing up or an adult to give him boundaries. Ponyboy refers to Dally’s life as “ … in jail at the age of ten… Dally growing up in the streets.” (90)Dally only has the streets to look to when he needs help or guidance because his parents never gave him the parent attention he needed. After the Socs beat up Johnny, Dally felt sorry and became very passionate to Johnny and protective. Ponyboy explains that “ Johnny was the only thing Dally loved. And now Johnny was gone.” (152) Dally only ever loved Johnny. Likewise, Johnny loved Dally. Johnny cares for Dally to a great extent and also looks up to him. Ponyboy said “ Johnny worshiped the ground he walked on.” (34) Dally is the closest person to family for Johnny. Consequently, both Johnny and Dally care for one another.
Johnny and Dally share similarities, but have many differences as well. Dally does not follow the law. And in many ways in considered a criminal. Ponyboy says “ Dallas has a record with the fuzz a mile long.” (95) He is the least law abiding of the whole gang. On the other hand Johnny is the most law abiding. Johnny has a clean record and prefers following the law. Ponyboy stated, “ And Johnny, he was the most law-abiding of us.” ( 34) Clearly, Johnny was sensible towards the law.
