Synthesis Paper Inferno 4 and Purgatorio 7 (Comparing and Contrasting) Initially, I wanted to see if there was similarity between the Inferno’s first circle or level and the Pugatorio’s first spur, terrace, or level but I could not really find anything. I then decided to write once again about a topic found in my first paper and I noticed that despite the fact that the Valley of the Rulers isn’t the first ledge, or terrace in Dante’s Purgatorio[1] (unlike Limbo which is the first circle of hell) and that it isn’t also technically IN Purgatory but right before it (a.k.a Ante-Purgatory), it does indeed have some similarity/parallelism (but also big differences) to the first circle of the Inferno (Limbo). The key words I noticed was that Dante the wayfarer asks Virgil who are those “separate from the rest” as they approach Limbo[2] (In the Inferno). Then in the Purgatorio, Sordello leads Dante and Virgil to the Valley of the Rulers who are referred to those (spirits) who are “set apart”[3] Now speaking of Limbo in the Inferno, Virgil, who also happens to be from this place (proved by line 39, Inferno 4), refers to the inhabitants of Limbo as “those who live in longing”[4] (manifested by their constant sighing, and not any outcry of pain due to suffering unlike other Cantos in the Inferno). Logically and factually, these souls long for the Beatific Vision or entry into Paradise, but such event will never happen despite these pagans being virtuous[5]...

...Medieval society around the year 1300 A.D. can be summed up by Dante’s Inferno. In Canto XV we see Dante and his guide, Virgil, passing through the fourth ring of the seventh circle of Hell, the ring of the sodomites punishment. From his writings, we can learn about one of the technologies of Europe during Dante’s time. And also most importantly we can see glimpses of European society’s values as in heredity, idleness, fate, and the reach of Hell. In the beginning of Canto XV, we can see Dante and Virgil walking on to which seems to be a levee between a river and the fiery sands which tells us about technologies of the time. This he compares to “As the Flemings between Wissant and Bruges, to defend/ Against the tide that rushes in on them.”(15:4-5) By doing this, land is made useable to people. Land is a commodity. Here we see that medieval peoples had this technology at their hands to reclaim land lost to the sea for purposes of agriculture or town development. The fact that they could do this, tells that improvement in agriculture was growing. New technologies were being put to use which lead to more food production, in turn, lead to a growth in population of medieval Europe. As the two continue we can see the view of idleness in medieval Europe. ...AUGUSTE RODIN’S GATES OF HELL The Gates of Hell (conceived in 1880 – 1917; by Auguste Rodin (1840 – 1917) is housed at the Musée Rodin in Paris, France. (Musée D'Orsay). This impressive gateway was commissioned by the French state. (Gerald) The new appointed Secretary of Fine Arts, Edmond Tuquet (1836 – 1914), venerates Rodin’s art pieces and commissioned the sculpture on August 16th 1880 for the Musée des Arts Décoratifs. The original arrangements for the Musée des Arts Décoratifs were discarded three years later. (Musèe) Therefore, Rodin left and focused on experimenting and redesigning the portal for the next 20 years. At that point, the sculpture was still remained at its plaster stage; the gateway was not molded in bronze until Rodin’s death in 1917. Rodin’s Gates of Hell was reputed as a distinct piece considering his unique interpretation of its rough surface texture and shape that demonstrates the illustration of Dante Alighieri’s famous poem, The Divine Comedy (1308 – 1321). A few of Rodin’s most famous sculptures including The Thinker (1880 - 1925), The Kiss (1888 – 1889) and The Three Shades (1902) are inspired by the alto relievo sculptures in The Gates of Hell. This masterpiece was created anon after the Franco- Prussian War (1870 – 1871) during the installation of the French Third Republic (1871 – 1940).
