...ll animals breathe, that is to say they take in oxygen and give out carbon dioxide. This gaseous exchange is called respiration. Respiration can be defined as process by which living beings obtain oxygen to oxidize their reserve digested food in order to release energy. The organs which help in intake or supply of oxygen to the tissues and remove excess Co2 form respiratory system. Breathing in frogs are of three types: 1. Cutaneous respiration (Respiration through skin) 2. Respiration through lining of bucco-pharyngeal cavity 3. Pulmonary respiration (Respiration through lungs) 1) Cutaneous respiration: It is an important mode of respiration in frog which occurs all the time whether the frog is on land or in water. It is the only mode of respiration when the frog in dormancy period, i.e during hibernation and aestivation. The skin of frog has good supply of blood and this is provided by cutaneous artery. Moreover the skin is very thin and do not possesses any structure that may prevent the diffusion of the dissolved oxygen from water into blood. To carry on cutaneous respiration frog keeps its skin moist by taking occasional plunges into nearby water. The skin is also kept moist by mucus secreted by mucous glands of skin. Mechanism: Oxygen first dissolves in the film of water over the skin and then passes through the epidermal cells and capillary walls into the blood. On the other hand carbon dioxide passes out from blood into the water. 2) Respiration through lining...

...Stevens Institute of Technology) and Molski, in their essay entitled The Lost Art of Writing,[12][13] are critical of the terms, predicting reduced chances of employment for students who use such slang, stating that, "Unfortunately for these students, their bosses will not be 'lol' when they read a report that lacks proper punctuation and grammar, has numerous misspellings, various made-up words, and silly acronyms." Fondiller and Nerone[14] in their style manual assert that "professional or business communication should never be careless or poorly constructed" whether one is writing an electronic mail message or an article for publication, and warn against the use of smileys and these abbreviations, stating that they are "no more than e-mail slang and have no place in business communication". Yunker and Barry[15] in a study of online courses and how they can be improved through podcasting have found that these slang terms, and emoticons as well, are "often misunderstood" by students and are "difficult to decipher" unless their meanings are explained in advance. They single out the example of "ROFL" as not obviously being the abbreviation of "rolling on the floor laughing" (emphasis added). Haig[1] singles out LOL as one of the three most popular initialisms in Internet slang, alongside BFN ("bye for now") and IMHO ("in my honest/humble opinion"). He describes the various initialisms of Internet slang as convenient, but warns that "as ever more obscure acronyms emerge they can also...

Stonehill's angry outburst hinder the company's faith in him, and the profit motive may upend John's hopes. The researchers race against time for the children who have the disease. The film is maudlin to say the least but earnestly true. The very first thing I’ve learned in the movie is that you can do anything if you try hard enough. Our hero, John Crowley, finds the scientist who is on to a cure, quits his job, forms a start up, sells the start up to corporate America to keep the project going, and then defies the corporation in order to give the miraculous cure to his 2 kids. And, of course, the cure works! Wow, what a innocuous message! Notwithstanding the enormous number of...

How Technology Has Changed Our Language

...Twitter.  Social media’s been responsible for a lot of new words, for example tweeps, twitterverse and retweet. The word “friend” has become a verb, as in “she friended me on Facebook”. The term “check-in” no longer applies just to hotels and airports; these days it’s just as commonly used when someone reports where they are via a social network. Technology has also changed the way we write. Mobile phones have been responsible for a lot of the change, as users have moved towards texting as an everyday form of communication. For a start, WRITING IN UPPER CASE MEANS YOU’RE SHOUTING, while lower case writing is now the accepted form. Meanwhile, text language is full of abbreviations, missing vowels and acronyms. For example, the abbreviations LOL, OMG and gr8 are all widely used today but hadn’t been invented a few years ago. One of the drivers in this is that screen sizes and character limits are low, meaning that users need to abbreviate to fit their messages in. My Knowledge: ‘Emojis’ which are small digital images and ‘emoticons’ which are representation of a facial expression such as a smile or frown, formed by various combinations of keyboard characters are also now used because of technology. Their main purpose is to show how someone is feeling and their emotions rather than a person typing out how they are actually feeling. Technology has also enabled new words to be created such as ‘selfie’ ‘twerk’ ect. Without technology, there would be no way in which everyone would...

...mind of a sociologist; and how they would “judge the book by its cover.” But realistically the shocking part is that they don’t, instead they use their sociological imagination to broaden their thinking mentality, to find other ways to live. Who ever said that there only is one certain way to live and that is the correct way? I realized that as Meghedi, Ani and I were walking the normal or decent looking shoppers were keeping a good amount of distance, more than usual. Also, the shoppers that had children with them, they were pulling their children towards them in a noticeable way while staring at us. As I walked into the store, being extremely nervous because I was the first one to do this project; completely nervous, not knowing what was to come before me, there were four sales associates. One of the associates stood by the door and greeted each customer as they walked in. When I walked in that girl greeted me but not the same way that she greeted the other customers. Her greeting them was a lot sincerer compared to the way she greeted me. Everyone seemed to be staring at me but when I glanced back at them they would look away to not catch my attention, so they would not help me out, in hopes that I would leave. Finally, after a good few minutes of walking around I went up to one of the sales associates and approached her. I asked the brunette lady if she could assist me with finding an evening gown to wear for an upcoming wedding that I had. The lady took a good look...

Enterprise Odisha

...Enterprise Odisha Even after 62 years of independence, Odisha our beloved state is still developing. With thirty districts it is the 9th largest state in the country (155,707 Sq Km) and population wise 11th (36,706,920). It is a state which is rich with all kinds of resources right from minerals, fossil fuel and ores to rich history and culture. The land is fertile and has the capability to produce many Rabi and Kharip crops. Now if we scan the country and try to name the prosperous states, we can count them on finger tips. Among which Gujarat, Haryana, Punjab and Goa may be the front runners. Odisha may not even appear in the first 10. So what makes these states economically better than us despite the fact that we are far wealthier than the others in terms of Natural Resources, history, culture and intelligent brains? To find out let’s have a closer look at the simple strategies adopted by the prosperous states. My father always said, owning a gold brick does not make you rich. You will be rich only when you learn to make a fortune out of it. It is that simple. The prosperous states have done this. Only that in their case, the areas of their strength was their gold brick. Gujarat is strong in entrepreneurship and business sense, Goa is rich in natural landscapes and Punjab is rich with fertile agricultural land. These states have worked on their strengths to develop themselves. When I say the states have done it, I mean the contribution of both government and people...

Something

...-One Walking into school after months of not showing up was like walking into a nightmare. I forgot the smell and the peeling paint and the tiled floor. I forgot how the people talk and walk and stare. But being here again, it comes back in huge explosive waves. I feel sick. All I’ve been feeling lately is sick. I search for my locker. All the numbers are wrong, jumbled and unreadable. Asking would mean something is clearly wrong. I hold onto all my books, my backpack pressing hard on my shoulders. The bell rings and it is louder than I remember. I clench my teeth. The sounds resembles nails on a chalkboard, at least to me it does. Every day for two months I went to history class at this time in Mrs. Waters’ room. And now, I have no idea where it is. “Edith,” a girl’s voice says. I turn. “Yeah,” I say to Clara. Clara is the sweetest person on the planet. For the longest time I thought she was super fake because how can someone be that nice all the time. But she just is. “You have Waters still, right?” “Yeah,” I say. She loops her arm around mine. “I’m glad they didn’t change it.” “Me too,” but I don’t really care. Pulling me around corners and through different hallways we end up in history class. The room looks familiar, but a faraway familiar. Like a dream or déjà vu. She sits in the front row right next to the teacher’s desk. I escape to the back, the corner, right next to the window. Clara looks around and then moves to the seat in front of me. “I get it,” she...

...Paul Banks, the new supervisor in Section A. Their conversation is as follows: SAM: Paul, we seem to be having some problems in your section. The line has been down twice in the last three days. This is our busiest time of the year. We can’t afford to have recurring problems of this type. I want you to stop that quality-control project I have you working on, find out what the problem is out on the line, and get rid of it. PAUL: Okay, I’ll get out there, find out what’s causing the problem, and get rid of it. SAM: Fine. A quick check of the line reveals that there was a problem with the automatic control unit. Paul checks and finds that it would take four hours to replace the unit. “If you put in a new one,” the maintenance man tells him, “you won’t have a problem with it for at least sixteen months. It’s up to you. I’ll do whatever you tell me.” Paul tells the man to replace the automatic control unit. By late afternoon the new unit is installed and the line is operating at full speed. However, the next morning, after Sam receives the previous day’s production figures, he calls Paul in. “What happened in your section? I thought you were going to fix the problem.” “I did,” Paul tells him. “The automatic control unit was giving us trouble, so I replaced it.” Sam’s voice indicates that he is not happy with this decision. “You pulled the unit in the middle of a work-day? Why didn’t you wait until the shift was over and have the unit pulled then? You could have...

The Things They Carried

...The character I have chosen is Lt. Jimmy Cross from the story “The Things They Carried.” Jimmy Cross is the leader of Alpha Company in the war of Vietnam, although he seems like he is not part of it. “He had difficulty keeping his attention on the war […] but then he would slip away into day dreams, just pretending, walking barefoot along the Jersey Shore” (p.279). This quote clearly shows that he was living in a parallel world between the war that he was living at that moment and his obsessed love for Martha. During the war Jimmy Cross had two obsessions with his love back home Martha. The first obsession that Jimmy shows is that he thinks all the time that “she was a virgin, he [and that he] was almost sure.” (p.274). Another quote that can be used as an example is how he describes her from a photo that she sent him as a souvenir “Her legs, he thought, were almost certainly the legs of a virgin, dry and without hair, the left knee cocked and carrying her entire weight” (p.276). Even though he was not sure of her virginity, he liked thinking that she was one. The second obsession that he shows throughout the short story is that he thinks almost all the time about her “He remembered kissing her good night at the dorm door. […] He should have carried her up the stairs to her room and tied her to the bed and touched that left knee all night long.” (p.276) Jimmy Cross is wracked with guilt because he believes that his preoccupations for his love for Martha blinded his...
