The Significance of Joy/Hulga’s two names in “Good Country People.”
The name Joy means happiness, bliss or delight but these are not words Joy Hopewell use to describe how she feels about herself. Joy does not mean happiness because happiness is based on material things such as celebrating birthdays or graduations. In fact, Joy is deeper, it is something special from God that can be felt even when one is sad or unhappy. Joy Hopewell is a very intelligent woman with a Ph.D. in Philosophy but has disabilities that make her a sad and angry person. The name Hulga represents her incomplete self because she wears a wooden leg and she has a heart problem. Joy does not see anything joyful in her life, so she changes her name to Hulga. Because she feels it is an ugly name fit for an unattractive woman. …show more content…
Hopewell, has a favorite saying “Nothing is perfect”(47). This explains Joy’s disabilities. She lost her leg due to a “hunting accident when she was ten”(80) and now wears a wooden leg. She also has a heart disease which forces her to stay with her mom because her doctor said “with the best of care she might see forty-five”(131). This is not what a grown woman expects her life to be like. She is Thirty two years old and having her mom care for her, deprives her of her independence. A woman of her age in this situation would not be joyful. Maybe the only time Joy was joyful was before the “hunting

...Deckard ENG125 Instructor Heather Neilson 08/18/2014 Symbolism, theme, and other literary elements within literature Literary works are a way of escaping or comparing to day to day life. Many works can grab you with extensive word usage, language, emotion, and even setting. Symbolism which is used in most literary works such as, The Worn path, by Eudora Welty and Good country people by Flannery O’Connor which also have similar themes. Theme consistent in both works is similar due to the religious nature portrayed in, The Worn path and Good country people. Though each are similar each portray a different aspect of faith, from redemption to triumph. Perception of literary elements based on the characters within each work, are portrayed differently the overall themes are similar. Symbolism can be described as one thing meaning more than its literal meaning. (Clugston, 2014) For instance, Welty’s, The Worn path, is seen instantly like: “Seem like there is chains about my feet, time I get this far, she said, in the voice of argument old people keep to use with themselves. Something always take a hold of me on this hill-pleads I should stay.” (Saunders, 1992) The worn path itself is symbolic of the journey of life that has been traveled many times over. Even the character, Phoenix Jackson, her name alone is a symbol. Phoenix is representative of a mystical bird that rises in the air and burst into flames. A new phoenix arises from the ashes, stronger than the one...

Americal Literature

...American Literature Journal Writing Tabish Jaleel Shaikh March 10(Saul Bellow- Seize the Day) Seize the Day was a comparatively easy read, and seemed like a very real life depiction of American life, from the eyes of the two generations, Tommy Wilhelm and his father, Dr. Adler. Comparing it to one of the first novels I read in this course, Death of a Salesman, I realize that Seize the Day also has the theme of the broken myth of the American dream embedded in the story. Also the title of the novel struck me at first, but I could not remember where I had read or come across this phrase before. Upon searching online, I remembered that it has its origin in one of the poems of a Latin Poet Horace, the word being “Carpe diem” in Latin. I remembered that I had read this back in high school, the stanza of the poem was:   While we speak, envious time will have {already} fled Seize the day, trusting as little as possible in the future. It’s interesting how just a small phrase can carry so much meaning. Saul Bellow has very effectively depicted the philosophy of carpe diem by narrating a real life scenario of war stricken America where maximizing the utility of time is the very important. Although the theme of alienation and isolation is prevalent throughout the book through Tommy’s life events, Saul could not make me feel sympathetic towards Tommy. Tommy’s inability to judge himself, and be self-aware of his strengths and weaknesses causes his downfall. He is always...
