Lombardi embodied the word “motivation” in its truest sense. He has been known to rally his “troops”, in this case his players on the gridiron, to exceed their potentials and to always strive for excellence. Several books have been written in relation as well as praise to his leadership style and winning mentality.
Although it may be a leap to compare Lombardi’s ideals to Niccolo Machiavelli, it is not hard to see how similar they were in some facets. opted to have an unprejudiced nature in performing his role as a coach. His was the time when coloured America was separated from white America. Lombardi was one of the first not to be intimidated in finding the best players he can for his team regardless of their race or religion. He pioneered the entry of African Americans into the sport. Furthermore, in a more controversial instance when an interracial relationship between his player and a young woman caught his attention, Lombardi was first to address his team and vehemently speak out of his zero tolerance of racism. This not only transformed the make up of his team but of the whole league in general. The league’s level of competitiveness increased resulting to a larger audience watching every game.
His unprejudiced attitude did not only end on the color of the skin. It extended to sexual orientation when he found out that one of his players were homosexual.
