Burnout is a term with many different definitions and perspectives when used in different contexts. For this article, burnout is defined as a prolonged response to chronic emotional and interpersonal stressors on the job, comprised of three dimensions: exhaustion, depersonalization, and inefficacy (Maslach et al., 2001).
Exhaustion is often defined as personal depletion of emotional resources and is recognized as the core dimension of burnout (Maslach et al., 2001). Maslach speaks in depth towards how exhaustion is not an emotion that is simply experienced, it also causes people to distance themselves emotionally and cognitively from their work (2001). Life Disruption is the unexpected changes in schedule, routine, and managing life responsibilities that demand attention (e.g., illness, changes in life style, social status, or professional or personal responsibilities).

Tools for Success
Dr. Figley has developed a Compassion Fatigue self-test called the ProQuol that can be taken online to check in and assess one’s own level of compassion fatigue. It is considered the most effective screening tool to date: www.isu.edu/~bhstamm/tests.htm .
Learning to recognize your own symptoms of compassion fatigue has two purposes described by Dr. Figley. Firstly, it can serve as an important “check-in” process for a worker that has been feeling unhappy and unsatisfied. Secondly, allows the worker to develop a “warning system”. Gives them the ability to gauge where they are at in the present time. Checking back in periodically to see how they have progressed or regressed. This can help a working decide when to seek help, change jobs, or even change careers when compassion fatigue is beyond repair.

Goal setting is also essential to creating that purpose when things are feeling overwhelming. Creating SMART goal is an easy to remember, yet functional way to aid in prevention of compassion fatigue

A child is in a home where she is beaten, malnourished, possibly sexually abused, and made to feel that she is an outcast. She is only six years old. The human services caseworker goes to the home and wants to grab her up and run, but she knows, legally, there is nothing she can do. Human service professionals face the daunting task of making the hard decisions like this on a daily basis, leaving some with cases of burnout they never overcome, leading to a life dependent on the same system that lead to their own disability brought on by guilt, depression and chronic fatigue. Imagine 14,894 child abuse and neglect assessments with only 155 caseworkers to handle them. The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services conducted a study in 2011 that showed an increase of 1.61% from 2009 in cases handled with a 6.86% decrease in staff (Pgs. 1-5). That would mean each caseworker would have a caseload of 96 individuals. The high emotional demands and guilt play a large role in the stress that leads to burnout in many of these professionals.
