B. Reason to Listen: According to Chris Joseph of Small Business “Compromise can help resolve disputes quickly, which is important when a protracted disagreement could potentially derail a time-sensitive project or when there is the need to keep a simmering conflict from escalating.”
D. Credibility Statement: I know about compromising in the workplace because I have researched it and have had to compromise at my current job.
E. Preview of Main Points: 1. First, I will discuss how to properly compromise 2. Second, I will discuss the best times to compromise 3. Finally, I will discuss what you shouldn’t do when trying to compromise

II. Body A. According to our book: compromising is to find a solution that everyone can live with. 1. The key is to make each side feel that the other is giving up something of equal value. 2. Be respectful. If someone thinks you’re listening thoughtfully, she is more likely to respond in kind. An empathetic phrase, such as “I understand how you feel,” can go a long way. 3. Speak to common interests. Keep the common goal and good in mind. Remember: If an argument turns nasty, nobody wins. Tell the person how much she means to you and how much you value her opinion.

Transition: Now that I’ve discussed how to properly compromise, I will now discuss the best times to compromise.

B. According to Dale Eilerman from mediate.com the best time to compromise are: 1. When it’s impossible to satisfy everyone 2. When maintaining relationships is more important than getting your way. 3. When a solution is needed quickly.

Sherman Compromise

...Most of the debate in the first few weeks concerned the revision of the Virginia Plan. The Plan "corrected" the inequality that the "one state, one vote" notion inflicted upon the large states (and those, like the Southern states, that hoped to be large soon). Most of the details could certainly be worked out. Issues like fugitive slaves, export taxes, and import taxes were minor, when compared to the really big issue facing the Convention: representation. Quite frankly, the small states would never agree to a purely representational form of government. They foresaw the annexation of small, ineffective states as the populations of the large states continued to grow and their influence waned. Some, like the Delaware delegation, were instructed to leave the Convention if equal suffrage in the legislature was compromised. Large states felt the equal suffrage system to be inherently unfair, and were going to do everything they could to abolish it. Today, a conflict between the big and small states seems odd. Conflicts between states are now generally regional and regardless of size. But at the Convention, size, or anticipated size, was one big dividing line. The intensity of feelings of the two sides were surprises to the others - Madison and the Big State faction thought the inequality of equal suffrage to be so patently unfair that the small states would naturally accede.
