King, Peter. "Concussions The Hits That Are Changing Football." Sports Illustrated. 01 11 2010: Web. 13 Sep. 2012.

Dr. Ann McKee an associate professor of neurology and pathology at Boston University who has been studying the brains of deceased football players, wanted to illustrate the damage that repeated hits to the helmet can cause. When she slipped a slide of a cross section of a human male brain into the microscope it showed hundreds of tiny brownish triangular bits of a toxic protein called tau which chokes off cellular life in the brain. The slide of the cross section was 10-year NFL offensive lineman Lou Creekmur. “You can see that there are hardly any areas untouched by the damage, I would call it incredible chaos in the brain, Lou was demented when he died” said McKee. Over the past three years McKee has been given the brains of sixteen former NFL players, some of whom suffered dementia and ALS of severe depression. The families of the players wondered whether there was a link between football and the psychological, physical or behavioral problems that afflict some older players. Testing has been completed on fourteen of the brains; thirteen were diagnosed with chronic traumatic encephalopathy. Chronic traumatic encephalopathy is a progressive degenerative disease of the brain found in athletes (and others) with a history of repetitive brain trauma, including concussions as well as hits to the head. A film was showed to all 32 teams about the hits and what was legal and illegal. The players’ responses were booing, throwing things at the screen, and they were mad. The players say that because things happen so quickly on the field, it is extremely difficult for them to avoid inflicting crushing helmet-to-helmet hits. The players also collectively shrugged: That is football. “It is what makes the game popular, people love the battle and people love the violence” says Cowboys linebacker Keith Brooking. I personally agree with Keith Brooking this is what football is all about. The players all know what they are getting themselves and their bodies into and are rewarded with huge contracts to do this. Players suffer injuries and risk it all for the grand prize, a Super Bowl title. The problem is that many helmet-to-helmet blows are perfectly legal because they are with in the rules to hit an open-field ball carrier in the helmet under certain circumstances. So until they change these rules nothing is going to change. There still is going to be contact in a full contact sport. Players play this sport for the love of the game. They as well as we know the risks of it, but yet they still play it, and we still watch it. After all we have a so called finesse sport called flag football. This is football without the hits and who likes watching that, no one because it is not aired every week during primetime. I played football in high school. I loved the game and it still is my favorite sport. I knew the risks then but yet I stilled played. The pro football players know the risks also but yet they still play. Football is America’s favorite sport. It is rough, tough, and full of contact. That is why it is called football not ballet or any other sport.

Exchange Rate Exposure

...Exchange Rate Exposure Dominique and Tesar 2006 – Journal of International Economics 68 Summary by Paolo De Angelis As any introduction, the first part of the article describes and conjects about the main thesis: a possible relationship within exchange rate exposure and firm value. The Authors talk about their work and how they builded such strong hypothesis to demonstrate which is the connection and doing that they explain two objectives: understand how much these firms are exposed to exchange rate fluctuation and investigate why some firms are exposed and some not. Then there is an explanation about tools used to do the research and statistic technique used to test different ideas about correlation among main features characterizing these frims. A very important inference is about the firms involved and not; talking about Ford Motor Company the Authors explain how not only international operating firms are influenced by exchange rate but also local ones, infact exchange rate does influence sales competition in the country where local firms operate. As a resume it explain the third hypothesis about firms exposed due to the level of trade that they do; but, instead of the two previous hypothesis, using proxies because of data lacking. All of this using two diffused indexes: a mark-up index and the Herfindhal Hirschman Index, that is very suitable because of his power to evaluate firms not only relating to market share but squaring it to avoid both arithmetical...

Values and Ethics in the Workplace

...“Values and Ethics in the Workplace” Many companies market their brands by creating commercials and advertisements that showcase their commitment towards values and ethics. These marketing tricks draw us in, as consumers and as people because we relate to the commitment that they show. We relate because we all have our own sets of personal values and ethics that we have adapted to our lives. Growing up, our role models, religious beliefs and other influences helped shaped our personal values and ethics. It is easy to see where we get our own values and ethics, but what shapes a company’s values and ethics? To answer this question we must define what values and ethics are. Once we understand these definitions we can determine the sources of values and ethics in a professional environment and what impact these values and ethics might have on a company’s success. There are several definitions for the word “values”. In this case, the most relevant definition indicates that: “Values refer to moral principles or other judgments of worth” (Values, 2006, para. 1). As people, we develop our systems of values and moral beliefs according to what influenced us in our early years. Our values and morals are our personal guidelines or compasses that help us make decisions about what is right and what is wrong. With an understanding of values a person can act ethically. Acting ethically involves analyzing or interpreting a situation and deciding what is the “right” way to behave...

Cellonics

...1 CHAPTER-1 INTRODUCTION Seminar Report For Electronics (ECE) / Electrical (EEE) / Instrumentation (EI or AE&I) Engineering or Sciences 1INTRODUCTION Are you tired of slow modem connections? Cellonics Incorporated has developed new technology that may end this and other communications problems forever. The new modulation and demodulation technology is called Cellonics. In general, this technology will allow for modem speeds that are 1,000 times faster than our present modems. The development is based on the way biological cells communicate with each other and nonlinear dynamical systems (NDS). Major telcos, which are telecommunications companies, will benefit from the incredible speed, simplicity, and robustness of this new technology, as well as individual users. In current technology, the ASCII uses a combination of ones and zeros to display a single letter of the alphabet (Cellonics, 2001). Then the data is sent over radio frequency cycle to its destination where it is then decoded. The original technology also utilizes carrier signals as a reference which uses hundreds of wave cycles before a decoder can decide on the bit value (Legard, 2001), whether the bit is a one or a zero, in order to translate that into a single character. The Cellonics technology came about after studying biological cell behaviour. The study showed that human cells respond to stimuli and generate waveforms that consist of a continuous line of pulses separated by periods of silence. The...
