Confederate Flag Controversy

On July 9, 2015 a bill was presented to the House of Representatives asking that the use of the confederate battle flag be discontinued due to the fact that it represents only pain, torture, humiliation, and racial oppression (Congressional Bills and Votes 2013). This bill was presented in the wake of the Emmanuel 9 shooting in Charleston, South Carolina. Our elected officials, along with some American citizens are calling for knee-jerk legislation instead of taking time to get to the root of the real issue at hand. This type of legislation will only cause more tension and divide amongst the American people, when we need to start coming together as a nation. Though it has changed over the years. It is no longer just whites being racist against blacks, it’s a mix of all races hating and discriminating against each other. Getting rid of the Confederate flag is not a remedy for the plague that is racism and violence that infects our nation (Hemingway 2015). It’s a shame when our law makers don’t listen to the majority and vote with the minority. As Rep James Mikell Burns stated, “I am sympathetic to the 61% of South Carolinians who do not want it taken down. Obviously those of us who have ancestors who fought in [the Civil] War think it’s appropriate to honor them on state property” (Kinder, Menton, Mertens, & Savidge 2015). He was only 1 vote though, and the other state legislators voted to have the flag removed from the South Carolina State building (Kinder, Menton, Mertens, & Savidge 2015). The legislators are supposed to listen to their constituents and vote with the majority. Government for the people by the people has been lost somehow. “Once we’ve blown up every confederate statue and smashed every tombstone with Confederate marks and erased all evidence of the Confederacy from our roads, we’ll still have the scourge of racism and every other sin with us” (Hemingway …show more content…
To no longer allow it to be sold and have it removed from public sight, so that some may no longer be offended, is not going to solve the underlying problem. Good or bad, history cannot be hidden away in hopes that it is forgotten. Americans must embrace our history and learn from it so that the mistakes from the past aren’t repeated in the future. It’s time to take a good long look at what is actually to blame for the continuing hatred and racism that plagues this great nation. The stigma surrounding the reputation of the Confederate flag has changed many times throughout history. The Confederate flag is a battle flag that has seen numerous battles, and once again finds itself in the center of another. This battle is one where some feel the flag needs to be removed and banned and others are fighting to keep the flag flying. The Confederate flag didn’t kill those nine individual in Charleston, SC. Lack of action on Roof’s friends and family’s part is partially responsible. Those who saw his posts online, and did nothing are partly responsible. Most importantly, Roof is responsible for the murder of those nine individuals. Making this situation out to be about the Confederate flag is not only disrespectful to those nine individuals, but also to those who died under that flag fighting for this nation to become better than what it has
