Conflict Resolution Strategies
In many cases, conflict in the workplace just seems to be a fact of life. Situations occur where different people with different goals and needs have come into conflict. It is not necessarily a bad thing that conflict exists. Effectively resolved, conflict can lead to personal growth and development. The following paragraphs list four of the five conflict resolution strategies that are used to resolve conflict successfully – compromising, competing, accommodation, and avoidance.
When compromising occurs, there is no winner or loser. Compromise tries to find a solution that will satisfy everyone. Every person who is involved in a conflict gives up something, to gain a solution that is satisfactory to both parties. The team has to be encouraged to consider a resolution to reach a common ground.
Competing (win-lose strategy) is one of the five conflict handling intentions. “When one person seeks to satisfy his or her own interests regardless of the impact on the other parties to the conflict, that person is competing. You compete when you place a bet that only one person can win, for example” (Robbins & Judge, 2011, Chapter 14, Conflict and Negotiation).
Supporting the situation at K24 about who is developing a new idea for the pilot to the RTV channel, the writers cannot come up with an appropriate idea for the pilot (Teamwork, Collaboration, and Conflict Resolution, 2006). Accommodation (lose-win strategy) of the idea, along with the understanding of the imminent deadline is critical. In addition, a meeting with the channel prior could have a better outcome, allowing an avenue for direction within the writing staff at K24. According to Robbins and Judge, avoidance is
