...CASE –iv Conflict in close quarters Overview of the Case Study (3 slides) The case study was an experiment to study the dynamics of isolation in long-term space travel by a team of psychologists at Moscow's Institute for Biomedical Problems (IBMP). Within the confines of a replica Mir space station, three international researchers, including a Canadian, Japanese and Austrian participant were isolated with four Russian cosmonauts for 110 days. At the New Year's Eve party, the participants partook in the drinking of vodka, which was allowed by the Russian space agency. What evolved was a series of events which involved violence, sexual harassment, and questionable ethics. A violent fight erupted between two of the cosmonauts, which was resolved quickly. Later, the Russian commander aggressively kissed, twice, the only female participant, Judith Lapierre. All three of the international participants appealed to the IBMP regarding the Russians behaviour, requesting disciplinary action. The experiment ended in controversy as the Russians downplayed the kiss, saying it was a fleeting kiss and blaming an emotional female participant whilst Lapierre claimed sexual harassment. Thus, was it really sexual harassment or a stolen kiss? Or is the question here that the parties involved here had attached different meanings to the same incident. ...There is more conflict in the world than you may realize. The Outsiders is full of conflicts. Susan Eloise Hinton started the novel when she was 15 and did the majority of it when she was 16. She used her initials because the publisher was afraid, that if buyers would be able to tell that she was a girl, not many people would buy it. In the book The Outsiders there are two main groups, the Socs and the Greasers. Socs, are the “nice” kids that are more upper class. They still get in fights, but they can get out of them more easily. Greasers are the ones with lower hand. They are more well known to usually be trouble makers. The Outsiders is in the eyes of a greaser named Ponyboy, who seems to go against the stereotype of a greaser. He is in advanced classes in school and is considered “nice”. One of Ponyboy’s friends, Johnny, commits murder while Ponyboy is there to witness. He and Johnny run away, and they wonder if they should turn themselves in or not. Passing over the road is a German Panzer Tank followed by a platoon of German soldiers carrying MP-40 Machine Pistols. As, the 101st nervously prepares to engage a Panzer Tank, which has them outmanned and outgunned, they hear a whistling sound in the distance believed to be an aircraft. Before they know a P-51 Mustang fighter plane, also known as a “Tank Killer” swoops in and knocks the Panzer out. Unexpectedly, the airborne troops open fire. A 2008 study of inmate-on-inmate violence in thirty prisons confirmed what is called the “importation” theory, or that violent inmates bring their violent ways into prison with them. The Bureau of Justice Statistics indicate that the Federal Bureau of Prisons and 19 states are over capacity, with 20 additional states also close to maximum prison capacity. A case in point: Chino Men's Prison in California, was built to hold 3,000 inmates; it currently holds 5,900 prisoners. In 2009, Chino, California prison inmates staged a riot which resulted in the injury of at least 175 prisoners. Overcrowding increases stress under the best of conditions, let alone in situations when individuals have limited coping skills, such as prisons.
