...Entrepreneur p. 1 The purpose of this paper is to conduct an interview of a business owner to conduct a critical analysis of the business. On Sunday, 2013, I will interview X about her experience with business ownership in the cosmetology industry. Interview Question 1. What are the products and services offered at your local business? A.: X offers a wide variety of retail hair products and they cater to both male and female needs. Interview Question 2. What made you decided to open a salon? How did you move forward? Having been a beautician in salons owned by other people for 3 years, independence sounded like a luxury. Witnessing other salon owners’ conduct their business in a less favorable manner made her want to run her own salon so she could build her own reputation. She purchased a salon that was already established, changed the name to X and hired a few additional employees. The salon had employees working at the location already. Mrs.X’s desire for independence reflects the “Need to Achieve” (Boone, 2012, p. 195) characteristic of an entrepreneur. Entrepreneurs want to excel, they enjoy the challenge of reaching difficult goals and are dedicated to personal success (Boone, 2012, p. 195). Interview Question 3. Is the business operated as a sole proprietorship, a partnership or a corporation? What are the particular advantages and disadvantages of the form(s) experienced? ...to soul searching as well as becoming closer with our lord and savior. By reviewing the meta-narrative of the bible I have been able to more closely and attentively delve into the would of Christianity. This has propelled my thought process as to better analyze each passage and thus creating a better understanding what what was being proclaimed in the biblical scriptures. Before starting this class I would read the scriptures and have a vague understanding of the message hidden in the words. After reviewing all of the video lectures and hearing what the professor has had to say about the meanings of each passage, I have been able to redirect my though process to that of biblical understanding. Recalling week one of our biblical passage analysis, after reading the given passage I received and comprehended very little information on the passage. I began to speak with family, friends and others of the christian religion, and after consulting with thhem I was better able to understand what the passage was calling for. I had come to the understanding that God needs us to be able to comprehend what he has left for us and to put his words into action and how all of the passages have a meaning and relation back to our life in modern society. But, I can...

...Critical Review of Cizek, Gregory J. (2005). High-Stakes Testing: Contexts, Characteristics, Critiques, and Consequences In Richard Phelps (Ed.), Defending Standardized Testing (pp. 23-54). New York, New York: Psychological Press. By Cheryl LeBlanc-Weldon When I decided to delve into the issue of high-stakes testing, I purposefully set out to find its defenders. Critical thinking is important to me and part of the process of thinking critically is to view a variety of perspectives on an issue in order to obtain an informed understanding and from that, an opinion. As an experienced educator, I have participated in standardized testing in a variety of ways. I have administered and graded tests in both Mathematics and Language Arts. I believe that currently in Nova Scotia we don’t have the type of high-stakes testing they have in the USA and other parts of the world. Our students do not need to achieve a certain level of achievement on the standardized tests they take in order to grade and teachers are not fired or have their salaries docked when students fail to achieve the benchmarks. Still, the provincial tests our students write do have a degree of importance in that the results are published for media and public consumption (which directly affects the opinion people form of the health of our education system) and certain resources are channeled into schools with the weakest performance. In addition, the way students view themselves and their abilities are affected...

...Stem cells: What they are and what they do Researchers believe stem cells offer great promise for new medical treatments. Learn about stem cell types, current and possible uses, ethical issues and the state of research. By Mayo Clinic staff You've heard about stem cells in the news, and perhaps you've wondered if they might help you or a loved one with a serious disease. You may wonder what stem cells are, how they're being used to treat disease and injury, and why they're the subject of such vigorous debate. Here are some answers to frequently asked questions about stem cells. Why is there such an interest in stem cells? Researchers hope stem cell studies can help to: * Increase understanding of how diseases occur. By watching stem cells mature into cells that eventually become bones, heart muscle, nerve cells, and other organs and tissue, researchers and doctors may better understand how a variety of diseases and conditions develop. * Generate healthy cells to replace diseased cells (regenerative medicine). Researchers hope they can train stem cells into becoming specific cells so that those specialized cells can be used to regenerate and repair diseased or damaged tissues in people. People who might benefit from stem cell therapies include those with spinal cord injuries, type 1 diabetes, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, heart disease, stroke, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis and multiple sclerosis. Stem cells could also be grown to become new...

...Gloria Davies and Gil-Soo Han KoreAn coSmetic SurGery AnD DiGitAl publicity: beAuty by KoreAn DeSiGn Abstract This article examines the relationship between digital publicity and cosmetic surgery. While focused on South Korea, it also discusses China because of the conspicuous Chinese demand for Korean cosmetic surgery in recent years. In fact, China has become the largest export market for Korean cosmetic surgery. The analysis is based on the premise that there is a vital link between cosmetic surgery and digital technology in both these countries. We argue that the celebrity culture spawned by entertainment media has facilitated the normalisation of cosmetic surgery to the extent that it is commonly viewed, quite unproblematically, as a form of human physiological enhancement. The article examines the publicity surrounding cosmetic surgery (comprising media reports, advertisements and commentaries) to see how it is presented in the Korean media and on the internet. These findings are then considered in relation to the promotion of Korean cosmetic surgery in China. In the 2000s, Korean cosmetic surgery rose as a by-product of the massive cultural phenomenon known as Hallyu, or the ‘Korean wave’. Hallyu represents Korea’s media success: its entertainment products have generated enormous revenues since the first exports of Korean popular culture in the 1990s. In 2009, Hallyu revenues were estimated to have reached US$6 billion (cited in Oh, 2010). Cosmetic surgery was first...

...A Study on Purchase Pattern of Cosmetics among Consumers in Kerala Dr. Vinith Kumar Nair* Dr. Prakash Pillai R* Introduction Understanding behaviour of consumers is a key to the success of business organizations. Marketing personnel are constantly analyzing the patterns of buying behaviour and purchase decisions to predict the future trends. Consumer behaviour can be explained as the analysis of how, when, what and why people buy. Consumer behavior can be understood as: "The decision process and physical activity individuals engage in when evaluating, acquiring, using, or disposing of goods and services." (Loudon and Della Bitta, 1980). Nowadays, this phenomenon, can also be illustrated in the following way: "activities people undertake when obtaining, consuming, and disposing of products and services" (Blakwell, Minard and Engel, 2001). A study by Voss and Parasuraman (2003) suggests that the purchase preference is primarily determined by price than quality during pre-purchase evaluation. Given explicit quality information, price had no effect on pre-purchase or post-consumption quality perceptions. Instead, post consumption quality evaluations had a favorable impact on price evaluations. Another study by Chernev (1997) analyzed the effect of common features on brand choice and the moderating role of attribute importance. It is argued that when brand attributes differ in importance, with the best value on the most important attribute, thus further polarizing brands’ choice shares...
