...qxd 12/12/01 10:20 AM Page 1 1 Importance of Cover Letters The cover letter you choose for transmitting your resume to an employer or important networking contact can be one of the most significant factors in the success (or failure) of your job-hunting campaign. In fact, a survey of nearly 600 employment professionals, conducted by the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), suggests some 76% of employers may automatically eliminate an employment candidate from any further hiring consideration, based solely on the quality of his or her cover letter alone. Further, 43% of survey respondents also reported they view the cover letter as equal to the resume in importance. When it comes to running an effective employment campaign, therefore, this data should cause you to sit up and take notice! (Note: A copy of the full survey, which covers both cover letters and resumes can be obtained by contacting SHRM by phone, (703) 548-3440, or by e-mail at SHRM.org.) If well written and informative, the cover letter can grab the reader’s attention, raise his curiosity, and stimulate immediate interest in your employment candidacy. In fact, if particularly well written, it can sometimes raise sufficient interest to compel the reader to extend an interview invitation without reading the resume document to which it is attached. By contrast, a poorly written cover letter can be disastrous to an otherwise successful job-hunting campaign, serving as an immediate roadblock to any...

...Before writing a cover letter, its important to understand how it can help or hurt you. In the internship application process a cover letter is your first impression. It's an opportunity to tell a perspective employer why you’re the perfect fit for their internship and their office and just as importantly, a cover letter is an opportunity to tell an employer you don't care about their position, by writing a sloppy or template cover letter. Some valuable cover letter topics include, explaining why a position interests you, what you bring to the table, how you would be a great fit, or something unique about you that makes you different from the hundreds of other candidates. The ultimate goal of your cover letter is to get the reader excited to meet you for an interview to learn more. To summarize the points above, ingredients needed to make a successful cover letter are: Header with contact information: Including a header with your contact information on the cover letter makes you look professional and ensures your information will be easy to find. You should also consider including this header on all documents you’re submitting when applying, it demonstrates your professionalism and acts as an opportunity to brand yourself to the perspective employer. Who is your audience? Try to find the person who is in charge of intern hiring and address your cover letter and resume to them. Statistics show you have a better chance of being hired if you know who’s doing the hiring and...

Britnie Hassen Colorado Technical University After extensive research on international job openings in Mexico, Israel, China and UAE I was able to find some customer service jobs that all four countries are looking to have filled by different companies. Here are the links to each posting that I located: China: http://www.learn4good.com/jobs/customer_service/e/189572/search/beijing/ Mexico: http://www.learn4good.com/jobs/customer_service/e/192731/search/guadalajara/ Israel: http://www.learn4good.com/jobs/customer_service/e/181381/search/tel-aviv/ UAE: http://www.learn4good.com/jobs/customer_service/e/157668/search/ras-al-khaimah/ Differences in resume, cover letter and email formalities internationally: For starters the term resume can also be referred to as a “CV” or curriculum vitae, which is typically the same thing as a resume except CV’s are normally two pages long and with multiple attachments. Cover letters as referred to in the U.S have multiple names internationally like letters of interest and motivation letters. Regardless of the name the process is still the same however typically self-photos of the applying individual are attached to a cover letter, resume or both whereas in the U.S, photos are not appropriate attachments when looking for employment. It is also important to remember that paper sizes differ in other countries so altering your document size will be necessary if you want all your information...

...Group A hiring committee in search of a candidate for the TRON Leadership Development Program. The job candidates are applying to be an entry-level Human Resources representative with TRON to build core human resource and business expertise skills. Assignments within this job posting include labor relations benefits, talent acquisition among others. The hiring decision process included some challenges and difficulties. At times, not every member was present at the same time in order to collaborate live about the strengths and weaknesses of each applying candidate. Hiring the right candidate was our choice and responsibility to insure that we are avoiding a future employee that could present threats or problems for TRON. This responsibility put a lot of pressure on my hiring committee. Also, it was difficult when candidates would not submit the assignments in a timely manner, such as the cover letter, resume, or online interview stream. This led to difficulty in collaborating and discussing the candidates’ job eligibility. When it came time to hire an individual, we went through a series of questions to assess each candidate. First we simply asked the hiring committee “is the applicant qualified to perform the job?”. We needed to think twice before hiring an applicant into a job that is outside his or her set of skills and knowledge. Next we asked, “is the applicant enthusiastic?”. It is important for an applicant to express enthusiasm for the job they are applying for because...
