In this Creativity course, I have learned a lot about my level of creativity and how to improve my creativity skills. The books that we read, the videos that we watched, and the assignments we did were a great exercise to practice my creativity. I know that I am a lot more experienced and feel more advanced in my creativity than before I took this class. I am more confortable about expressing my creativity side that I did not know that I had. One of the tools that helped me the most was the reading. I have learned a lot from the book The Giant Hairball. I never thought that I would have learned what I did from the book. I definitely judged a book by its cover and was completely surprised. What I learned most in this book was about creativity in the workplace and the ability to make anything an adventure inside or outside of work. I would look up to any manager who managed like MacKenzie. He was really good at encouraging other people and inspiring others to bring out their creative side. He inspired me to be supportive and encouraging to others that I work with. Eventually when I have a management position where I manage others, I want to be looked up to the way that I would look up to MacKenzie. I want them to have faith in me to be able to rely on my judgment when they need help coming up with ideas or need pointers on making decisions. The videos that we watched, including John Cleese on Creativity, The Deep Dive, and Sir Ken Robinson’s: Do Schools Kill Creativity, I feel like all the videos that we have watched in this class has given me a new perspective of creativity. Every speaker talked about creativity at a new angel. The one that I think I got the most information from was the second video that we watched, The Deep Dive. I have never given it any thought that there are companies out there that create new and more

Creativity in Schools

...Creativity in schools Traditionally the role of teachers has been to tell students what they need to know and then evaluate how well they have learned this. Student´s role has been relatively passive. This approach does not leave much room for creative or critical thinking and does not allow learners to take full responsibility for their learning. With the paradigm shift in education, creativity has become more valued. The modern world is changing quickly and a person who can think creatively and find innovative solutions for everyday problems can adjust more easily. This essay describes very broadly only a few of the factors that influence student creativity in schools. There is no standard definition of creativity. However, the main two criteria are the singularity and usefulness of the creative activity’s result. Creativity has been grouped into two main categories: Big-C Creativity and little-c creativity. Big-C encompasses mostly people with very unique talents and/ or skills (Mozart, etc) and scientific discoveries, paradigm shifts, etc. Little-c is a term for a much more widespread kind of everyday creativity. For example finding new ways to use ordinary items. A more specific example: turning a car into a sauna. Little-c creativity is the kind of creativity that everyday life in schools should pay attention to and develop. The type of thinking that is associated with creativity, is divergent thinking. It often happens spontaneously and generates lots of ideas...

Innovation Leadership

...INNOVATION LEADERSHIP Innovation Leadership Russell L. Dykes Bellevue University Abstract Innovation leadership is all about facilitating and empowering others in order to help their creativity thrive. In order to be a leader of innovation, the manager must facilitate the innovation of others by providing the space, equipment, networks, partnerships, and environment that allows their creativity to flourish. The innovation leader must toward establishing a culture of innovation realizing that innovation work requires a team. Innovation cannot be conceived, developed, and delivered by just a single individual. Innovation Leadership Contrary to the beliefs of some, innovation leadership is not project management. Neither are the processes of innovation leadership the same as those of being an inventor. Innovation leadership is about creating the context and environment for innovation to occur. This involves creating and implementing the roles, physical space, partnerships, networks, decision-making structures, and equipment needed to support innovative thinking. Innovative leadership is not about being the one with the best and brightest ideas. Rather, it is about facilitating and empowering others in order to help their creativity thrive (Malloch & Porter-O’Grady, 2009). Quantum leadership can tolerate uncertainty and disorder, and can create a flexible structure based on self-organizing. Creative disorder brings out valuable opportunities...

Creative Thinking

...Creativity In Schools: A Maltese Perspective Paper presented during the First International Conference on Strategic Innovation and Future Creation, Malta, March 2009 Shirley Pulis Xerxen 1 The knowledge and skills needed in the future may not even be known at the time a person attends school or university. As a result, these institutions cannot limit themselves to the transmission of set contents, techniques and values, since these will soon be useless or even detrimental to living a full life. (Cropley, 2006, p. 136)1 Introduction In this paper I attempt to provide some insight about the teaching of thinking and creativity in schools by drawing parallels between what is found on this subject in the literature, my experience as a teacher of thinking skills in Primary schools in Maltai and from findings that emerge from a questionnaire that I conducted with Maltese Primary and Secondary school teachers to analyse their perceptions on the teaching and learning of creativity, compatible with the educational values of current pedagogical practices. Facing today’s challenges Educators are being increasingly faced with the ever-growing call for entrepreneurial citizens who value openness, diversity and creativity, who are able to design the future in all areas of their life. This demands that a school’s curriculum must be open and flexible enough to accommodate these new perspectives. This paper focuses on the need for a holistic approach to creativity in education, an...

Myths of Innovation Reflection

...MGT 573: Creativity in Business Prof. L. Gundry Paper 1: “Myths of Innovation” Reflection Sean W. Campbell Overall, I found the book very insightful, creative, and thought provoking. Ultimately, it confirmed thoughts we already had about innovation and how novel ideas were born, it merely highlighted them for amplified recognition. We know that ideas do not just come from nothing, it is a product of our experience in every-day life and work. Innovation and inventions usually attribute their beginnings to already existing ideas and methods. The author, Scott Berkun, provides detailed ideas on how to foster innovation and creativity within the workplace. It’s also interesting to also realize Berkun’s own ideas about innovation came from past experience and knowledge of the process of creation. By studying how inventors and innovators worked and thought in the past, he was able to make educated and well-thought arguments towards the creation of the “myths.” So, what is Berkun’s message for managers? As Socrates once said, “The only true wisdom is knowing you know nothing.” This definitely applies to managers: the myth that managers know what to do. Subordinates take for granted that their superiors know what they are doing in the context of their business. While it is true that managers have the power to accomplish decisions others can’t, there exists the myth that they have the wisdom or experience to to do it effectively. We often place faith in our supervisors...

What Is Creativity?

...Find your dream What is creativity? Most people associate creativity with music, art, and writing. Some people describe creativity as a process of producing new tools, services, or creating something original.. Creativity expert Sir Ken Robinson introduces his idea of creativity through people’s misconceptions. First, Robinson suggests that creativity does not correlate only to “special people”; who have extraordinary or unique natural capabilities. Robinson holds the view that creative people are individuals who have achieved high levels of performance throughout their life. Moreover, Robinson suggests that creativity doesn’t have to be associated with particular activities such as the arts. He states, “Scientists, technologists, business people, educators, anyone can be creative in the work they do.” Additionally, he claims that in business people frequently equate creativity to problem solving skills. Yet, Robinson states, “Creativity can be as much a process of finding problems as solving them.” After reflecting on the traditional beliefs regarding creativity, the author establishes his own definition which is “Imaginative processes with outcomes that are original and of value.” He says that any creative process has to have outcomes or products that are novel and unique. In order to approach a new product or give rise to creative insights, Robinson suggests incorporating prior experiences and ideas into a new form, and looking at opportunities from different angles...

Creative Thinker

...Page Creativity is in every one of us; some people choose to use it and other’s put it to the side thinking that they are not smart enough, or don’t have the ability to be creative. Creative thinkers, those that think outside of the box and have the ability to create and get done what needs to get done (freedictionary, 2010), are set apart from all the rest, because they don’t sit back and wait for change, they create change. This is the case of Larry Page, the co-creator of one of the largest and most innovative internet search engine sites, Google. Larry Page wasn’t the type of guy who sat around waiting for something to change, he seen what needed to be done and created change, and came up with innovative ways in creating the largest and most profitable internet based company in the world today. Starting out in his friend’s garage, Larry’s creative thinking led them to come up with innovative ways to make money, such as selling advertisements, and even creating a web based email called Gmail, to allow users to set up email accounts that tailor to their needs and can hold more storage than any other email carrier (San Juan, 2010). The impact that Larry’s creative thinking has had on Google has been tremendous. Starting out from a garage to becoming one of the largest internet companies in the world today proves that living on the idea to be creative and innovate, you will always grow, and that is exactly the motto Larry thrives on day in and day out. Creativity is in everyone...

Firms Should Get Their House in Order Before Seeking to Manage Supplier.

...Creativity and Innovation in Business Prof. Danny Araneta Cabulay Dean – Institute of Accounts, Business and Finance Far Eastern University, Manila, Philippines dcabulay@feu.edu.ph Albert Einstein once said, “Imagination is more important than knowledge.” For most people, creativity is more easily associated with art than business. But the highest art form is business because one can be very creative, dynamic and revolutionary. Creativity is also related to innovation and change. I am fully aware that many of the things we see around us are products of minds of geniuses, creative thinkers. It is hard to imagine a business without a creative mind. A creative mind is essential in any type of business. When we get tired of the old product or technology, as it also becomes obsolete, we long to have, a better product or technology. This is the essence of innovation. It has to be more convenient to customers. The etymology of the word “create” indicates to make something; while “creation” is something that shows skill, imagination or ability; and to be “creative” means the ability to invent, design or develop original ideas. Even in the simplest businesses, creativity can happen. In Manila, for example, a typical bakery would operate from 5:30 a.m. to 9:00 pm. A bunch of students made a feasibility study to inject the idea of a 24-hour bakery. Hence, Pugon de Manila was born. This is an example of an incremental innovation to the traditional bakery...

National Curriculum Analysis

...required (Craft, 2001). The National Curriculum Handbook (QCA, 1999) describes creativity as a rounded thinking skill, which implies that it can be taught rather than fostered. This suggests that creativity is much more dependent upon context and relationships. In order to teach creatively, imaginative methods should be employed to make learning more interesting and valuable. NACCCE (1999) suggests teaching creativity tries to support children in their “creative potential” and to “give them confidence to try”. This suggests a need to encourage children to believe in themselves and their abilities in creative practices. Craft (2000) believes it is more about a ‘mind-set' or attitudes, and an inclination to do so. The majority...

A Full-Time Program for Children Until They Reach Eighteen

...the internet has some negative impacts on the formation of characters among children. Hence, staying at school seems to be a rational choice so that they can be educated and guides in the right direction. In a recent survey, a large proportion of school children in Europe reported that the really enjoyed he time at school with many outdoor activities as well as lively lessons from enthusiastic teachers. It is also asserted that this proposal may contain several drawbacks. The first obstacle is that children may also learn a lot of important social skills if allowed to stay home and help their parents with housework. In some developing countries, children can build their sense do social responsibility by taking care of their siblings and playing games with their peers in their neighborhood. ...Case study An analysis of 3M, the innovation company Introduction Any review of the literature on new product development and innovation management will uncover numerous references to 3M. The organisation is synonymous with innovation and has been described as ‘a smooth running innovation machine’ (Mitchell, 1989). Year after year 3M is celebrated in the Fortune 500 rankings as the ‘most respected company’ and the ‘most innovative company’. Management gurus from Peter Drucker to Tom Peters continually refer to the company as a shining example of an innovative company. This case study takes a look at the company behind some of the most famous brands in the marketplace, including Post-it® Notes. It examines the company’s heritage and shows how it has arrived at this enviable position. Furthermore, the case study attempts to clarify what it is that makes 3M stand out from other organisations. Background Originally known as the Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company, with its headquarters in St Paul, Minnesota, 3M was established in 1902 to mine abrasive minerals for the production of a single product, sandpaper. From these inauspicious beginnings, the company has grown organically, concentrating on the internal development of new products in a variety of different industries. Mccaslin

...Creativity, education, and play all have similar aspects when it comes to the world of the arts. Creativity is another another word for being different. Without taking a chance at something you cannot be creative. Playing and education both coincide with one another in great ways, but a lot of educators neglect this great act in trying to get children to learn. A few passages in the articles particularly resonated with me. One concept that interested me was an idea McCaslin suggested in his article “Play” about play and how it is a continuing way of learning. She said, “The impulse to play, if encouraged, can become a continuing way of learning, a medium of expression, and eventually an art form.”(Play/McCaslin pg. 43) In other words McCaslin is trying to say that play brings people together and allows them to open their mind in a different way. Educators in todays education system neglect the fact that play allows students to be more comfortable with one another as well as allowing them to do it on their own. Kids take playing games more serious than anything else they will do associated with school so why not integrate that into their lessons. In the aspect of play eventually being an art form, that statement is completely true. Playing is great for children as well as well as adults to actors. Playing is something actors do on a daily basis that allows them to be free and creative. Performing on stage can be considered play especially when it involves improv because that...

Personality

...Introduction Of the many factors that contribute to a successful education and subsequent career, an understanding of personality type is among the most useful. While interests and skills change during the course of a person's life, the one thing that does remain constant is an individual's personality type — the innate way in which each person naturally prefers to see the world and make decisions. All individuals are unique, but people of the same type share large similarities in the kinds of academic subjects and careers they find interesting, and the kind of work they find satisfying. By understanding the role personality type plays, people can gain important insights into their educational, career and relationship needs. And because people of different types often communicate in very different ways, counselors and advisors can learn which strategies work most effectively with each individual student. Understanding you, Toree People like you are usually imaginative, creative and sensitive. You are a private person, and you take time getting to know people and letting others get to know you. You probably have a small group of close and trusted friends, and are generally cautious about jumping into new social situations. People describe you as thoughtful and empathetic, and you will try hard to please the people you care about. Outwardly quiet, you have strong feelings and opinions, especially about the way people should treat one another. You are very committed...
