Creeco reports its activities to the Cree Nation at its first annual assembly

Business Leaders, chiefs, special guests, and representatives for the all the Cree communities of Eeyou Istchee gathered for a two-day conference to discuss the affairs of the Cree Regional Economic Enterprises Company (Creeco). The event was held this past summer in the Cree community of Chisasibi located in Northern Quebec.

Creeco started its operations in 1982, three years after the Crees received their first compensation monies payable under the provisions of the JBNQA, the decision was made to create a holding company for all the Cree-owned enterprises in which compensation monies were invested. “The idea to have an annual assembly came from the people, which Creeco took part the year before as part of its mission to consult and provide information to the Cree people. Before that, they never had an assembly. The reporting was done as part of the principle as part of the Cree Regional Authority now known as the Cree Nation Government (CNG). All reports were tabled information. At that time, there was enough time proper time to disseminated the information of the Cree companies. That is why the decision was taken for Creeco to have its own assembly. People wanted it.” explained Jack R. Blacksmith, Chairman of Creeco.

Each community was well represented to hear the presentations of the presidents of the all the Cree companies. The highlights included job creations, training opportunities and of course, the positive profits from all the company.

“The annual assembly of Creeco was very success! The people were thanking us for sharing the information that were provided to them.” says Mr. Blacksmith. “The presentations that were made by the presidents of each company were very informative….we took time to answer the questions that were asked.” adds Mr. Blacksmith.
