TESCO & OXFAM Type of businesses, their purpose and the ownership of these businesses. In this PowerPoint I will be describing the two contrasting businesses Tesco and Oxfam.

TESCO – TYPE OF BUSINESS Tesco is a PLC [public limited company], it is a supermarket based in the United Kingdom. Tesco is also Britain's largest retailer. Tesco the merchandise retailer has its headquarters in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, England. After Walmart, it is the second-‐ largest retailer in the world measured by profits and it’s the second-‐largest retailer in the world measured by revenue. Tesco has stores in 12 countries across Europe, Asia and North America ;it’s the grocery market leader in the UK with a market share of roughly 30%. Tesco is owned by shareholders each with percentage share ownership of the company. Tesco is in the secondary sector and the tertiary sector, this is because they produce the products and market and sell them.
WHAT IS A PLC? ADVANTAGES/ DISADVANTAGES… A PLC is a public limited company, this is a type of public company. It is a limited liability company whose shares may be freely sold and traded to the public on the stock exchange. A limited liability company is where a partner or investor cannot lose more than the amount invested in the company. Advantages -‐ Taxation and Tax Advantages – Limited Companies are only taxed on their profits (usually at a rate of 21%) and as such are not subject to the higher (personal) tax rates. -‐ More Capital -‐ PLCs are able to sell shares of their company, which makes it is easier for them to gain large amounts of capital. Disadvantages -‐ The costs involved with the stock market would most likely be substantial. -‐
There is a duty on shareholders, and their interests may sometimes clash with your own objectives about the future direction of your company.
OXFAM – TYPE OF BUSINESS Oxfam is an international confederation of 17 organizations [charity] working in approximately 94 countries worldwide to find solutions to poverty and what it considers as injustice around the world. In all Oxfam’s actions, the ultimate goal is to enable people to exercise their rights and manage their own lives. Oxfam works directly with communities and seeks to influence the powerful, to ensure that poor people can improve their lives and livelihoods and have a say in decisions that affect them. Oxfam is in the primary, secondary and tertiary sector.
SUMMARY OF EASYJET & OXFAM In summary, Tesco and Oxfam are two different businesses, this is because they both have different aims and objectives as well as different ownership . Oxfam as a business succeed in providing a good environment for those in poverty to live in and Tesco provide quality products to customers to purchase.
