No matter where in Mexico you find yourself let it be in Mexico D.F the capital or in the exotic Caribbean beaches of Cancun you will always be dazzled by the diverse elements this country offers. The Mexican country has three main aspects that best describe their culture, which are the historical aspect that is represented every where you go, the creativity aspect found in their cuisine all the way to their arts and the proud aspect that is found in every individual that calls himself a Mexican. Poverty rates (The Kaiser Family Foundation, 2013, table 1) for Hispanics (24%) are second only to Blacks (27%) but considering that Hispanics make up 17% of the population in the United States, this amount is alarming. Not only are poverty rates bad, but education is worse. According to the Pew Research Center ("Access, Information and Knowledge," 2008, table 22) studies, Hispanics have a low college graduation rate at only 13.9 percent in contrast with a second minority group, Asians, at 50 percent. So why is the Hispanic community seeing negative outcomes in contrast with other minorities? This paper will go over current health status of this minority as well as barriers that influence health, what being ‘healthy’ means, and how race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and education influence health. ...This article examines Appalachian folk medicine and considers the importance of utilizing an integrative theory, the Health Belief Model, to understand the use of alternative medicine in the United States. The author examines the need for social workers and other health care providers to further assess the roles of folk medicine in an Appalachian client population. The author creates linkages among the limited writings in the literature regarding folk medical practices of Appalachians and also draws examples of folk medicine usage from qualitative research and professional intervention with this client group. The author focuses on how mainstream health care professionals may assess the role of folk medicine in the lives of their clients by approaching folk medicine as a focal and culturally-imbedded component of their clients' overall health care. Moreover, the author addresses the need for health care professionals to become not only aware of folk medical practices, but to act as advocates for culturally competent health care within the larger health care delivery system which largely overlooks or downplays the significance of folk medicine.
