In the past, the U.S. military had a need to provide snipers and designated marksman with a superior rifle with the capability of faster follow-up shots and a tactical need for both close and long-range. While both DPMS and Knight’s Armament were tested the Knights Armament SR-25 was chosen over DPMS GII SASS. This led DPMS to sell the now commercially available GII SASS. It has an 18-inch 416 stainless fluted bull barrel that’s coated with Teflon and has a 1:10 twist. It has a Magpul stock and back-up sights.
The SASS has a JP competition trigger and a great reputation. DPMS provides several calibers and several barrel lengths. Randy Luth founded DPMS in 1985 to create weapon parts and accessories for U.S. military contracts. Later he developed his own AR rifles. In 2007 Cerberus Capital purchased DPMS and combined three other companies to create Freedom Group.
The DPMS GII AR’s are in a different category because it weighs less with a forged upper and lower and is more ergonomic. The reduced bolt carrier group offers a smoother and softer recoil and can accept AR-15 handguards. It has a steel feed ramp that allows for a smaller receiver and improves the loading of a variety of ammunition. The ejection port is extended to provide consistency and better extraction through the monolithic bolt carrier. The bolt has an improved gas ring that…show more content… This function reduces failure to extract situations and serves to eliminate running Slap Pull Observe Release Tap Shoot (S.P.O.R.T.S) drills. The SASS allows for easy optic and night vision mounting and can produce bolt-action accuracy. Being designed and tested for military use, it is specifically designed for marksman or snipers to engage with long range precision as well as lay down heavier firepower if needed. This rifle is marketed towards law enforcement and long-range shooting
