INFORMATION OVERLOAD
Introduction
The world we live in today is simple, “INFORMATION OVERLOAD.” Many companies and corporation have various computer systems to provide an efficient workplace. Perhaps it comes from a world of technological advances or it comes from a world of social changes. Let me start with this, technological things come about over years, but it’s simple, technological things only come about from collaborating. In today’s time, it is my opinion to show that technology in a work place comes directly from sociological impacts in our society today. It’s easy, collaboration, sociological changes in time and trends of historical data in the world today are key results in technological advances. Overload can be defines as, “to much information in a processing system, or a unit of measure that exceeds its capacity.” Sociology is the study and classifications of human societies. So now I think, if I put these two together what do I get? In this paper I will discuss my position that sociological changes affect how efficiency works in a work place.
Collaboration
From the beginning of time, think about how things came about. How did we start our own language? How did we build streets? How did we design computers, car building machines, and create robots that work in pharmacies. It’s simple it’s a little called collaboration. Collaboration can be defined, “to work jointly with others or together especially in an intellectual endeavor.” In today’s time collaboration is the key to any effective work place. To develop systems, many engineers come together and collectively come up with an idea to create a system. Lets looks at a system that the United States Air Force has called ADS. ADS is also known as the automated disbursing system formerly known as CDS, the centralized disbursing system. ADS was launched in the summer of 2011 as a test run with my Major Command, ACC. This system is designed to process and balance daily audit reports, report balance sheets directly to the defense financial and accounting service (DFAS), make automated manual payments and cash checks directly to the system. System programmers at Hill AFB in Utah created this program to increase efficiency in the work place. Systems programs completed coding packages to the Air Force which linked ADS to all of our accounting systems such as CRIS, BQ, and IAPs which are all payment processing systems. When using CDS SME’s, subject matter experts, came together to collectively come up with a plan to link all systems into one so any one person did not have to update anything. So with that said they collaborated with system engineers from each accounting system to determine strengths and weakness of each program so they could collectively come up with a plan. In this case, it proves that “sociological” changes affect technological changes in society in the work place. If there is no type of collaboration there will be no efficient programs.
Sociological Trends today
A famous writer by the name of Bill Drayton once said, “Social entrepreneurs are not content just to give a fish or teach how to fish. They will not rest until they have revolutionized the fishing industry.” What he means is that there is no one particular way to catch fish to feed people, but there are more advanced ways to catch fish to feed a community. His goal was to revolutionize and innovate the fishing industry. Days like today I look back and think of the auto industry. Cars were once built by two pair of hands verse days like today, using a fully fledge automate system that molds, builds and puts together every piece of the new vehicle you see driving down the street. Not only building a new vehicle but the design of one also comes from the word “collaboration.” If it wasn’t for a group of individuals they could not review historical trend data to come up with a solution to revolutionize the auto industry in today’s tough competition. Historical data is the key to fixing issues like a computer going slow because we ask for too much information at any one time. When you look at trend analysis developers, engineers and programs can look back and reflect on the past to determine new systems that will help in the future. Going back to where I was discussing robots working in a pharmacy center. Womack Army Medical Center in Fort Bragg, North Carolina, was the first medical facility to utilize robots. This robot was designed to find certain medications in stock at the hospital, it was responsible for counting and/or mixing appropriate medication prescriptions and it was also responsible for giving the description to the customer. Developers had to collectively come together to determine the needs of the hospital, how this prototype can efficiently benefit Department of Defense as well as how much money will this save the Department of Defense. An average Pharmacy Tech makes approximately $40,000.00 per year says the bureau of labor statistics. If there is two robots installed replacing two pharmacy techs will result in a $80,000.00 savings annual per medical facility. During sequesters at this moment in time and large budget constraints, trends in costs have promoted Department of Defense to come up with an innovative plan to create a new system robot. So that proves that not only historical data, but collaboration are keys to information overload in today’s work place efficiency plans. Customer service is the key to any successful business, even if it is Department of Defense. Simple things such as that shame today’s advances.
Conclusion
As the words of the 99 Air Base Wing Commander at Nellis AFB state, “….Innovative ways to initiate base wide support….” Stand true. Once out the US Government has any sort of budget constraints, people come together to develop a game plan for cost savings in the future. In today’s time we are forces to be more innovative so information overload, or work overload does not affect the troops on Active Duty. If one computer system can do ten different things that one troop out in a deployed environment can focus on other aspects verses being stressed by focusing on multiple systems. In today’s time, technological changes are forces by changes in society. People make people as they develop new systems for years to come.
