...King Tutankhamen Essay Christina Wells Professor Susan Galasso Humanities 111 July 24, 2013 King Tutankhamen King Tutankhamen is known to many as King Tut, the boy King of Egypt, the Boy King, The Boy Pharaoh, and Boy Pharaoh Tutankhamen. The mystery of the death of King Tutankhamen has never been completely resolved. Did his death happen due to illness? Or, was young King Tutankhamen murdered or was his death simply an accident? King Tutankhamen ruled Egypt as Pharaoh for 10 years until his death at age 19, around 1324 B.C. After his death at age 19, he disappeared from history until the discovery of his tomb in 1922. There are several different theories regarding the death of King Tutankhamen. Some historians seem to think that because a hole was found in the back of his skull that he was murdered, which through recent test was determine that the hole likely happened doing the traditional fashion of mummification. King Tutankhamen also had several different illnesses, one being a crippling bone disease in his clubbed left foot. King Tut was tall and physically frail his poor health could have also been the cause of his death. In the Egyptian royal family traditional inbreeding could have also played a role in his death along with the Kings’ poor health. There have been DNA tests published in 2010 that revealed that King Tutankhamen’s parents were brother and sister and that his wife, Ankhesenamun, was also his half-sister. Also...

...Assignment # 1 How did Tutankhamen die? Peter newman Dr. Norman Flowers Humanities 111 9th January 2012 Who was Tutankhamen? Before going any further we have to find out who was Tutankhamen. Tutankhamen (1346-1328), He was born at Akhetaten which was the capital city of Egypt. Tutankhamen was a pharaoh who produced little in his life and he did not increase Egypt’s borders or enjoy triumphant victories like the many pharaohs before him. However, he is the most recognized and probably the most famous pharaoh in the history of Egypt. He is so famous, because of the discovery of his tomb and his elaborate treasure. “Tutankhamen, named Tutankhamen early his life, was the 12th pharaoh of the eighteen dynasty of Egypt. He ruled from 1334-1323BC and lived ca. 1334-1323 BC, during the period knows as the new kingdom.” (www.crystalinks.com) His original name, Tutankhamen, meant “living image of Aten” while Tutankhamen meant “living image of Amum”. In historical terms, Tutankhamen is of only moderate significance, primarily as a figure managing the beginning of the transition from the heretical Atenism of his predecessor Akhenaten back to the familiar Egyptian region. (Www.Site-ology.com/Egypt/kt.htm). The most famous of all the kings found in the Valley of the Kings was Tutankhamen. During his tenth year ruling, Egypt was at war with Hittites. During this confrontation king Tutankhamen suddenly die. He died in the mid- January...

...The Death of King Tut Assignment 1 By Angela Faison Humanities 101 Professor Charles Fleming King Tut was born 1341 B.C.E. and was the 12th king of the 18th Egyptian dynast. King Tutankhamun was in power from approximately 1332 to 1323 B.C.E. After King Tutankhamun (also known as King Tut), death at age 19 he disappeared from history, until the discovery of his tomb in 1922 by British archaeologist Howard Carter. (http://www.history.com/this-day-in-history) With this discovery came a fascination into King Tut’s life and death. There have been many theories surrounding his death. Two theories I find interesting are that an accident caused the untimely death of teenage pharaoh King Tut. The other theory is that King Tut was murdered by his advisor Ay. King Tutankhamun's mummy has been X-rayed three times, in 1968, 1978 and in 2005. (ancientegyptonline.co.uk) But these scans have not been able to confirm the cause of his death. The first theory is that King Tutankhamun was genetically inferior. In 2010 DNA tests published revealed that Tutankhamen’s parents were likely brother and sister. (www.history.com/topics/ancient-history/tutankhamen) This left King Tut with a bone disease in his clubbed left foot. It also made it difficult for King Tut to stand in the chariot while performing his Kingly duties. Theorist believe that King Tut may have crashed his chariot leaving him with a broken leg. (www.history.com/topics/ancient-history/tutankhamen) In 1995 CT scans...

...Tutankhamen 1 Tutankhamen's death Jose Echavarria Steven Klein Hum111 7/22/2011 Tutankhamen 2 Tutankhamen died young, at around 18 years of age. However, his cause of death has not been confirmed. Did he die of an injury, of illness, or was he murdered? The legendary 18th dynasty pharaoh Tutankhamen died tragically young , during the period of Egyptian history known as the New Kingdom. His original name, Tutankhaten, means "Living Image of Aten", while Tutankhamun means "Living Image of Amun". Speculating as to the cause of his early demise has been a popular pursuit, There are no surviving records of Tutankhamen's final days. What caused Tutankhamen's death has been the subject of considerable debate. Major studies have been conducted in an effort to establish the cause of death. There is some speculation that Tutankhamen was assassinated, possibly by a close family member or associate due to greed and power, If he was murdered it would almost be impossible to solve due to the many years of tarnish. but also there is another hypothesis that his death was accidental. Tutankhamen 3 A CT scan taken in 2005 shows that he had badly broken his leg shortly before his death, and that the leg had become infected. DNA analysis conducted in 2010 showed the presence of malaria in his system. It is believed that these two conditions combined, led to his death. So he might have not been murdered after all. So many theories surround his death, it’s...

...head: MYSTERY OF TUTANKHAMEN DEATH Mystery of Tutankhamen Death Patience Williams Professor: Dr. Brook Beshah HUM 111 January 30, 2012 Abstract This paper unravels the mystery surrounding the death of Tutankhamen, an Egyptian Pharaoh of the 18th dynasty (1333 BC- 1323 BC in conventional chronology), a period in the history of Egypt regarded as the “New Kingdom” Hankey and Julie (2007). In addition, the paper discusses a brief history of Tutankhamen (the boy king of Egypt) who reigned for 10 years, the cause of his rather untimely death, which up to this day people continues to discuss with a certain degree of uncertainty. The paper accomplishes these tasks by providing a brief summary of some theories that might explain the mystery that surrounds Tutankhamen’s death. Finally, the paper identifies a particular theory out of many regarding Tutankhamen’s death that best explains the mystery of his death. Brief History Before discussing the mystery surrounding the death of Tutankhamen, it is important to know who he was and how and why he became the youngest pharaoh (king) in the history of Egypt and probably the entire world. According to Clayton (2006), Tutankhamen was the son Akhenaten, a former Pharaoh of the 18th dynasty of Egypt who ruled for 17 years and died probably around 1336 BC or 1334 BC. Tutankhamen who reigned for 10 years, became Pharaoh at the age of nine, but died at the age of 18. Historically, as a prince he was known as Tutankhamen, a name which...

...King Tut Vincent Johnson Strayer University World Cultures I Professor Leonard Lowe July 23, 2013 The topic that I chose to write about is the mystery surrounding the death of King Tutankhamen. There are many different theories as to how he died and all of them are controversial topics. Some will argue King Tut was likely murdered due to greed and power, while others believe he fell from his chariot or died from an illness (Kingtutone.com, 2010). Those that believed that he was murdered believed that this happened due to changes that Akhenaten (King Tut’s father) had made. Akhenaten had brought about a major change in Egypt when he started to push the idea of one god, and this concept went against everything Ancient Egyptians believed in. Other experts argue that King Tutankhamen died from malaria and osteonecrosis. Imaging results in a report, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, indicate that Tutankhamen had osteonecrosis of two metatarsal bones in one foot, according to the authors, and DNA evidence suggests that he was infected with the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum. Still others say that the king died due to an infection. New CT scans performed on King Tut shows a broken leg that could have become infected and ultimately caused his death. I feel as King Tutankhamen was murdered maybe by one of his servants. Researchers say that it was a known fact that Akhenaten brought a major change in Egypt...

...20, 2014 The cause of death of Tutankhamen still remain a mystery. Tutankhamen died young, around the age of 18. Tutankhamen (King Tut) was buried in a tomb discovered by an English archeologist named Howard Carter, on November 26, 1922. Inside the tomb lied King Tut within a quartzite sarcophagus- three separate coffins place one inside the other (Sayre, 2012). This essay includes scientific, historical, and other theories in how Tutankhamen died, includes two different theories and perspectives of how Tutankhamen died, and explain the theory of which of the two that is the most convincing towards the death of Tutankhamen. According to Archaeologist Chris Naunton, director of Egypt Exploration Society, learned that king tut body was burned. Chris discovered and studied the notes from Howard Carter and Carter assistant Lord Carnarvon (Carnarvon was also there at the discovery). The burning of the body was from the ritual of mummification of a king. Chris determined that King Tut died of an injury, driving a chariot to fast. The National geographic (2013) presume the king was maybe killed by a kick to the chest and ribs by a horse, since horses pulled the chariots. Both incidents sums the details up as which, King Tut died of an injury and not a disease or any other way. From the x-rays, CT scans, and other examinations King Tut died of an injury. The chariot the King was riding could have flipped over, someone could have ran into the King doing battle, or the horse...

...Death of King Tut In: Philosophy and Psychology Death of King Tut Did King Tut die from a sickness or was he murdered, that’s the question. Some Egyptologists and Scientists argue over the fact regarding King Tut’s death. The first theory is that King Tut was murdered because he had a lot of power. King Tut’s father (Akhenaten) changed Egypt in a big way. He wanted Egyptians to only believe in one God, in which it was against what they believed in. Some of the Egyptians wasn’t happy with that decision. King Tut’s father changed the way that the priest thought and it would have forced the priest to close down their temples and believe in what he believed in. The change caused the environment to be unstable. This change would also change the thinking from hundreds of years prior. When King Tut was a child, his father died and that’s how he received the throne. With King Tut being so young, he had little knowledge of how to run Egypt so that meant that he needed someone with a lot of experience to help him, so they would also look at the help that he had. Meaning, the help may have had something to do with his death. The second theory from Forensic experts was that King Tut may have had an infection. Doctor Zahi Hawass, stated that King Tut had a crack in his skull and it may have been caused during the process of mummification. Doctor Zahi Hawass also stated that King Tut had a fracture in left leg, supposedly to have happened a few days before...

...Week 4 Assignment 1 Tutankhamen HUM-111 Trudy Oglesby Professor Marcia Robinson Nov 6 2012 Tutankhamen Speculation has surrounded the death of King Tutankhamen ever since the discovery of his tomb. The questions have been asked, was he a victim of some sort of curse? Or could he have been affected by generations of in-breeding, which caused imperfection within his genes, or was he just a sickly man because in that time of the BC ages, a lot of men only lived to get in their early 30s. There are two strong theories, King Tutankhamen died from his illness and was he murder. King Tutankhamen has been described as a “frail boy" in need of a cane and found to have had the oldest genetic proof of malaria, this is the best theory surrounding his illness. There are quite a few theories that I have read about. But the experts found he had malaria and due to an infection he died not murder. They also found he had a crack on the skull along with a broken leg, which may have also been a contributing cause to his death. Some have even suggested that the King fell from his chariot while hunting (Ker Than, 2010). I choose to believe the King was murdered because there was so much at stake. And that the theory of Ay killed King Tut out of greed. In this theory, the motives behind his murder were substantial. He was the son of Akhenaton who changed the practice of worshiping many pagan gods to worshiping one god which was a new environment for the people...

...SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE SHOWS THAT KING TUTANKHAMEN DID NOT DIE OF NATURAL CAUSES - HE WAS MURDERED. ~KING TUT~ Tutankhamen, king of Ancient Egypt (often referred to as King Tut), died at the early age of around eighteen. To this day, his death remains a mystery that has brought many historians, Egyptologist and scientist to many theories as to how King Tut died. Two theories in particular are the theory that he succumbed to a broken leg that became infected, and the theory that he was murdered. The latter theory holds the most weight. In 1968, while performing an x-ray of Tutankhamen's mummy, scientist found bone fragments in his skull leading to the conclusion that he was murdered by blunt force trauma. (Lovgren, 2006.) However, later research lead some to say that the most famous pharaoh likely died of a leg injury which was complicated by bone disease, malaria and/or infection. (Tutankhamen CT scan Press Release, 2010.) The theory that the "boy king" had been murdered because of a hole in his head was ruled out and determined by many Egyptologist to have been the result of the mummification process. To be sure, homicide police in Ogden, Utah have been requested by a British film producer to apply modern forensics to the ancient case. According to their studies, they believe that they have proof of murder. Prominent Egyptologist, however, says that those conclusions are nonsense and based on hearsay. They argue that if in fact King Tut was murdered, then one would have...

...Tutankhamen Cadice Goldsboro Dr. Alan Rogers Lithonia Campus HUM 111 May 4, 2014 Strayer University Tutankhamen, a king of Ancient Egypt most people called him King Tut. Some researchers say they have resolved the mystery surrounding the death of the Egyptian boy-king Tutankhamen, who died in about 1324 B.C. at 19 years of age. The question was his death a mystery? As of today, historian, Egyptologists and even scientists are still trying to figure that out. There are several theories around his death but no facts. One of the theories is he had a broken leg, and an infection caused him to die, and the other is he was murdered, and another is that he had Malaria, Kohler, and Sickle cell disease English Archaeologist Howard Carter and his colleagues studied X-rays of the mummy that indicated a swelling at the base of Tutankhamen’s skull suggesting, “King Tut” as he was known, was killed by a blow to the head. Carter states “it was like stepping into a funeral of a 3,200-year old king”. “It was no longer just scientific research that bought out the human aspect” (Howard Carter, 2011). This theory concludes King Tut may have been murdered as the result of blunt force trauma (Lovgren, 2006). This theory was later ruled out, and it was determined that the hole to King Tut head was a result from the mummification process. King Tut had a foot disorder consisting of a low arch and a deformed structure within the bone density supporting bone necrosis. Dr. Hutan Ashrafin...

... The death of King Tutankhamun, the 12th king of the 18th Egyptian dynasty, who died at age 18, is a mystery (Tutankhamen, 2012). Speculations in the cause of death suggest King Tutankhamen died of injuries sustained from an earlier fall leaving an infection in the leg, malaria, or that he was assassinated. After that there a no surviving records of King Tutankhamun’s final days, his death is the subject of ongoing debate. The sudden death of King Tutankhamun, the boy king who ruled Egypt more than 3,000 years ago, is a mystery that may be finally solved. Scientists believe Tutankhamun may have fell from a fast moving chariot during a hunting excursion in the desert. Tutankhamun’s death became prevalent since his tomb was discovered in 1922 by archaeologist. English Archaeologist Howard Carter and his colleagues studied X-rays of the mummy that indicated a swelling at the base of King Tutankhamun’s skull suggesting, “King Tut” as he was known, was killed by a blow to the head. ...The Mysteries of King Tutankhamen’s Death There have been many theories on how Tutankhamen died. However, several scientist and doctors believe that they have solved the mystery. During research of this mystery many theories and assumptions have been made; such as murder, accidental death, birth defects, and illnesses. The three theories that will be discussed here are as follows: gynecomestia, accidental death, or murder. First we have the theory of Dr. Hutan Ashrafian, a lecturer and surgeon at the Imperial College London. He says that the key to solving the mystery lies in the art of the time. Numerous signs in the art depict King Tut with highly feminine features, and that the enlarged breast is indicative of a condition known as gynecomastia. He states that this condition when added to familial evidence, indicates that Tutankhamun might have suffered and eventually died from temporial lobe epilepsy. “ For all of them to die sequentially at younger ages is a sign of genetic inheritance of some sort,” Ashrafian said, adding “you could argue that one of them died in battle, one of them was poisoned, but none of them did die in battle. They could have been poisoned, of course, but it’s very odd for sequential pharaohs who were aware that they could have been killed to be killed at such a young age.” This statement he made after researching King Tut’s family members that preceded him in ruling as Pharoah. Ashrafian believes that Tutankhamun’s father, Akhenaten...

...tutankhamen theory By Lavonda Adkins Professor: Leonard Lowe HUM 111 February 2, 2014 THE TOMB King Tut’s tomb was discovered in November 1922, it is said to have been undisturbed for over 3,000 years. There was a rumor that engraved on the exterior of King Tut’s Tomb was the warning, “Death Shall Come on Swift Wings To Him Who Disturbs the Peace of the King”. This did not deter anyone from unearthing this wondrous sight. THE THEORY Tutankhamen became a king at the tender age of eight or nine years old, he was the ruler of Egypt. As ruler his reign only lasted roughly around ten years before his untimely demise. He passed away in his late teens. No cause of death was listed for him as there was no real reason that may have caused the young rulers death. The theories I have found for the cause of Tutankhamen’s death are as follows. THEORY ONE For many years scientists have used every available source of technology in an effort to determine the cause of King Tut’s death. There have been many theories named and many proved wrong. It is not easy to fathom that such an existence and death could not be determined by now. One theory listed is that maybe King Tut died of blunt force trauma, caused by a skull crushing blow to the back of the head. Many believe that his murder happened during his tenth year of his reign while there was a war raging in Egypt. The Egyptians were at war with the Hittites. Could it have been an enemy that murdered this king? Friend...

...Elongated heads, oval-shaped eyes, underbite jaws, malocclusion, big ears, and Androgynous looks were all taken as ordinary during most of Egyptian pharaohs’ dynasties. One prominent example is Akhenaten, whose representation on several images reflect his various physical disorders and syndromes. Just like Akhenaten, there were many other kings who shared similar characteristics, such as, his son Tutankhamen and Ramesses II. To begin with, Akhenaten’s son, Tutankhamen, shared very similar deformities and illnesses with his father. One of the reasons may be because of the uncontrollable factors both of them had in common, precisely, inbreeding. Tutankhamen suffered many deformities as early as the birthing stages, such as, club foot, an illness...
