...I didn’t know much about baseball and I sure didn’t carve time out of my busy day to try to learn, but this season turned out to be different. It was the season of 2014, and the Kansas City Royals made history. As the season was coming to an end and the Royals were doing so great they peaked my interest. I wanted to know what all the hype was about. I was seeing the Royals, our hometown team, on the World News, my city on the news. Every time I watched the local news it seemed that’s all they talked about with big eyes and bright smiles it was hard not to watch and get in on the fun. The Royals did it they made the playoffs, that’s what all the hype was about. It was the first time since 1985. That was almost 30 years ago I wasn’t even thought of at that point. It was record breaking and baseball fever was spreading like the flu. The city was draped in blue supporting their team. People like me who had never really watched baseball were fans, in my eyes it was bringing the city together. My boyfriend on the other hand, a sports nut, who could tell you anything you want to know about any sport from any season was watching faithfully. Slightly boring at first when u don’t know much about the sport, but I was catching on with his help. I’m sure I sound like a kindergartener asking a question about the game every five seconds questions most people would already know. He was patient. I wanted to learn everything I could to catch up with the rest of the baseball world. It was great...

...The lawns are tidy, the facades are gracious, in good repair; they're like the beautiful pictures they used to print in the magazines about homes and gardens and interior decoration. There is the same absence of people, the same air of being asleep. The street is almost like a museum, or a street in a model town constructed to show the way people used to live. As in those pictures, those museums, those model towns, there are no children. This is the heart of Gilead, where the war cannot intrude except on television. Where the edges are we aren't sure, they vary, according to the attacks and counterattacks; but this is the center, where nothing moves. The Republic of Gilead, said Aunt Lydia, knows no bounds. Gilead is within you. Doctors lived here once, lawyers, university professors. There are no lawyers anymore, and the university is closed. Luke and I used to walk together, sometimes, along these streets. We used to talk about buying a house like one of these, an old big house, fixing it up. We would have a garden swing for the Children. We would have children. Although we knew it wasn't too likely we could ever afford it, it was something to talk about, a game for Sundays. Such freedom now seems almost weightless. We turn the corner onto a main street, where there's more traffic. Cars go by, black most of them, some gray and brown. There are other women with baskets, some in red, some in the dull green of the Marthas, some in the striped dresses, red and blue and green...

...RADOSLAV RAFAILOV Student id: AC1303980 Computer information systems EN120.3.1 English Composition Assignment 2_02 My recent trip to the beaches at The Yucatán Peninsula, in southeastern Mexico reminds me of one of the most beautiful and spectacular places I’ve ever been. The beach smells fresh, almost like a new tropical breeze air freshener. Next to me is the Caribbean ocean, bright as a cloudless noon sky, washes onto the white sand. Looking at the waves’ white foam; then, I let my senses enjoy the sound as they break on the beach, almost like a shaken-up champagne bottle being opened. The sand is hot and looks like gold blended in with little white crumbs; it sparkles like the diamonds showcased in a high-end jewelry store and feels like walking on ashes from freshly extinguished fire. Despite the heat, walking on the warm, crystal sand pacifies my soul. I set up my folding lounger under the shade of a palm tree and explore my surroundings. The colorful towels spread out all over the beach are covered by bronzed figures. A net is up towards the water, and a few more figures dive to save a falling volleyball. Not far from the shore, you can see the coral sitting still in the wild and shallow water. People are laughing and playing in the burning sand, and others are relaxing on the beach reading their books while enjoying the bright rays of light coming from the sun. In a distance, I see occasional jet skis speeding over the waves, and sometimes, I can see a fish...

...p Types of Paragraph and Samples | English 1014-1 | | Define, Classify, Casual (Cause and Effect), Compare and Contrast, Example, Process Analysis(Directional and Informational) | | Marcus K August | 3/27/2012 | | Narration Paragraph Narration paragraphs are most frequently used in fiction and personal statements. As such, they will contain all necessary components of action development: protagonist, setting, goal, obstacle, climax and resolution. Writing a narration paragraph requires, consequently, accounting for sequential order of events and chronology. There are many descriptive elements included in the body of a narration paragraph but, if composed correctly, the paragraph will prioritize action over description. Exposition Paragraph Often times, this kind of a paragraph is used as a component of other types of writing. It’s written in order to clarify or explain problems and phenomena. Writing exposition paragraphs requires strict focus on evidence and objective language. It can contain elements of comparison and contrast, or cause and effect writing as both facilitate accurate exposition of the subject-matter. Definition Paragraph Definition paragraphs are used in order to explain the meaning, origin and function of things. They are used both in academic writing and fiction. To write a definition paragraph, writers should concentrate on the role of its subject in the context of the essay and account for evidence as well as examples accordingly...

...Methodology: When writing about the exemplification paragraph, we first had a report. We reported about the examples of how the world would end. We decided to do a “deal or No Deal” imitation to do our report. When we finished reporting, we then started on doing the paragraph. Methodology: Sahara and Alexis worked on making the descriptive paragraph. They thought about doing a descriptive paragraph about our mothers. They decided to make this as their topic because they wanted to describe or show how a mother loves and cares for her child. Methodology: On doing the narrative paragraph, we were asked to find a trailer and narrate what would happen in the movie. We chise the movie “Pacific Rim” that talks about an alien invasion. Alkexis was tasked to do this paragraph and we shared our guesses about what would happen in the movie. We guessed that in the end humanity would conquer the aliens and would stop them from invading th Earth. Methodology: In making the procedural paragraph we were asked to present examples of doing something procedural. We were tasked to do aerobics. In the picture we were practicing our aerobics for the presentation. After the presentation we then made the paragraph. Methodology: Bencen is working on the effect-centric paragraph. At first she found it hard to choose a topic that would easy to write about and that people could relate to it. Then she decided to write about the effects of procrastination...

...monstrosity, a creature looking more dead than alive. However, the creature is found to be breathing and, after much deliberation, it is decided that it must be destroyed. After this, slowly but surely, the small-town of Gatchfield begins to fall apart… More than anything else, I love the descriptions of Gatchfield. Short and sweet, sentences like, “…places where the population is rendered in three figures…the first numeral no more than a four,” as well as, “…progress moved like a tortoise dragging a ball and chain,” give a clear picture of the setting of the story. In one paragraph alone, Ford manages to bring to life his idea of a small town and, at least for me, the image sticks throughout the story. Even though the rest of the pages aren’t the most descriptive I’ve ever read, I always managed to have a clear image of what I was “seeing”. “The Night Whiskey” is a good story. After reading the first paragraph, I was hooked and, subsequently, sped through the entire story in one sitting. I loved the idea of the Night Whiskey and the Drunk Harvest, and really enjoyed the dark...

...of shock and awareness are created by the lack of detail present. The author uses the activity around the boy to exemplify and focus on the silence in the boy’s head. Choy uses tone, imagery and the narrative first person to convey the context and feelings of the narrative voice. A sense of distance and detachment from surrounding is established in the first paragraph with the sound of ‘footsteps’ and ‘voices.’ Nevertheless loud auditory imagery such as ‘a chair fell,’ ‘the curtains whipping,’ and ‘snapping’ illustrates the sense of an echo in the boy’s head. It conveys that everything affects him more, and that his senses are more vulnerable. This, therefore establishing that he has gone through some sort of trauma. The actions in first paragraph like ‘kept calling, rush, whip, shuddered and hesitated for a second’ are extremely quick. This is contrasting to the slow movements like ‘pull and clung’ in the second paragraph therefore illustrating the way time felt slower to the boy and the way the world spun around him. The shock he feels, is therefore highlighted. The quick movements in the first paragraph could also portray the urgency of the situation. ‘Rigid arms’ and ‘mommy’s head move’ are the first time that the reader is given some clue about the mother’s death. The rigid arms indicate lifelessness, while ‘mommy’s head move’ portrays lack of control, for the mother and the child. The realization of her death only dawns on the boy with ‘would never say...

...Beautiful Day There is this place just a few blocks away from my house where I like to go to get away. It’s called The Rock in Pawnee Rock. Early in the morning it can be so peaceful and quiet with beautiful wet dew still on the grass. As the sun comes up you see the colors surrounding the bright sky. Nothing more radiant as the sun on a bright morning. As I look around I can see every house in this small town, plus the long stretch of highway from great bend to larned. You see cars buzzing by on the highway and hear the hum of a nearby lawn being mowed with the smell of fresh cut grass in the air. The tall stone pillars remind me of the brave Indians that lost their lives in battle on these grounds. The jagged rocks around make me think of when I was a child and loved to climb onto the tallest rocks I could find, as I would stand at the top of the hill and felt like king of the world. Too Busy To Stand Still At the rock early in the morning the world seems so eerie and dark. The sun still shining but the lives of Indians passed still feel as if they are lingering in this hollow place. As I stand at the top of the hill you see the once lovely plaques dedicated to the Indians that lost their lives on these grounds, which is now riddled full of bullet holes. The walls and the tall pillars now covered in obscene spray paint, surely contaminated by the younger generation with nothing better to do. As you hear the loud cars busily driving by, you wonder if anyone ever...

...your sense of logic. While Fink could very well be stating facts, she draws the reader in with emotion. From the title of the story to the very last sentence. I, in the next few paragraphs will open your eyes and show you how Ida Fink is undoubtedly appealing to your sense of emotion and not just simply describing a day in the life a Jew in World War II. It’s not that simple. Can someone possibly write a story about the Holocaust and not have an inkling of emotion? The answer is no. The title “Scrap of Time” to me is an emotional title, meaning a seemingly small part of a big, drawn out time in her life. Yet she holds onto it. Keeping this scrap in the back of her mind as a reminder of what once was. An unwanted scrap of the character’s life, a life of segregation, humiliation, and anguish. The narrator recalls, “We had different measure of time, we different ones, always different, always with that mark of difference that moved some of us to pride, and others to humility. We, who because of our difference were condemned once again, as we had been before in history, we were condemned once again during this time measured not in months nor by the rising and setting of the sun, but by a word- “action,” a word signifying movement, a word you would use about a novel or a play.”(Fink 4) This paragraph to me exerts a feeling of disgust, humility, and sarcasm because of the comparison of a pleasant action to that of a deathly one. she’s slighting the Germans for describing a massacre...

...the page (section 2.04). The abstract should be between 150 and 250 words. The abstract should be written after the paper is completed, as it outlines the content of the paper. A Case Study of Precious A CaseThe instructions and sample paragraphs on these pages are formatted as a paper would be. The first paragraph of the paper should begin here; the title serves as the first heading, so there is no need to write the word “Introduction” as a heading. This paragraph should introduce the topic. It should suggest what questions need to be asked and what problems need to be addressed. For most student papers, the introduction should also provide a clear thesis statement, one that makes a clear claim that the rest of the paper will go on to demonstrate. If you are writing more of a summary paper, then the thesis should be the idea or theme that holds the essay together. If you are presenting your own research, then this section should relate to what was researched, what result was expected, and what was discovered.
