...Desperate Air Case Behaving ethically is a decision based on morals and more often than not managers or executives are faced with these difficult decisions that can translate into short or long term profits. Organizations that demonstrate good ethical behavior and strong corporate social responsibility typically yields significant rewards in return. But what happens when an unethical decision is the only way to save your organization from a collapse? That is the case for Desperate Air Corporation's vise president of Real Estate George Nash. Mr. Nash, after doing some soul searching, still decided to close out a deal to sell one of DAC's commercial property to Fledgling Industries even after discovering that the land is exposed with hazardous substances that could prove to be detrimental to the inhabitants of the land. In fact, this is a difficult situation to be in if I was Mr. Nash and an extremely thorny decision to make. I think that i would have to adopt the "RDCAR" paradigm before I make my final decision because it has proven to be a great method to successfully manage ethics in organizations. This five-fold process of recognition (ethical awareness), discovery (ethical fact gathering), cognition (ethical analysis and judgment), action (influencing ethical behavior), and reflection (assessment of ethical outcome) would be used here to examine this specific case. One would have to be very careful in considering the alternative course of actions taken because at what...

...Desperate Air Case In the Desperate Air case, As the Vice President of Real Estate at Desperate Air Corporation, Nash is facing with ethical dilemmas, and there are some moral reasoning about the conflict of personal and business ethics. Nash was told that pending sale of Florida property potentially had toxic waste buried beneath the surface. Thus, should he mention the hazardous materials to the Fledgling representative before he closed the sale? In my opinion, if I was in George Nash’s position, I would proceed with the sale without disclosing the information regarding what I had heard about the toxic waste. Using Deckop’s decision making models, the ethical decision-making may meet three goals: utilitarianism, profit maximization, and universalism. This means that if people use different perspectives, they would make different decisions. Profit maximization is actually a subset of utilitarianism, and the utilitarian is often portrayed figuratively as holding a scale, with the benefits on one side being weighed against the harm on the other. According to the profit maximization point of view, compared to harm, the decision may bring more benefit. In this case, Nash is conflicted between remaining silent and closing the sale immediately. Remaining silent will help his company stay solvent which in turns results in people remaining employed. Nash also have responsibilities to the company and employees. While speaking up and informing Fledgling about the toxic waste could delay...

...George Nash has seriously failed in his ethical responsibility by not informing Fledgling Industries about the toxic waste & going ahead with the sale. While it is true that disclosure of hazardous substances is not a legal requirement for the state of Florida & the non disclosure is legally above reproach, it is still morally questionable. As for the question of “What would I do if I ever found myself in such an ethical dilemma”, I think I would have disclosed about the toxic waste to the prospective buyer. It might result either in a delay in closing the deal or the party walking away from the deal. But I would have felt more truthful to myself & would sleep peacefully at night knowing that I haven’t endangered the lives of old people trying to lead their retirement lives peaceful near the ocean shore. The possible outcomes if I don’t disclose the toxic waste - • It could result in a backlash from the community once they find that the property is sold by DAC after hiding the facts. They may boycott the company flights resulting in huge losses & further batter the company’s image. • The employees looking for jobs outside might have it even tougher for themselves if they are associated with an unethical company. On the other hand, the outcomes if I DID disclose the facts – • Fledgling Industries may walk away from the deal cutting the chances of generating immediate cash for the company. But DAC can always look for another buyer. • It could cause a delay in signing...

...There should be some moral reasoning about the conflict of personal and business ethics. Does Nash also have responsibilities to the company that he is representing and the employees of that organization, who may suffer unemployment as a result of the sale not being successful? Whilst the State law does not extend to the situation presented - if these types of situation were common - would the law likely be changed? If so, then Nash may have a moral duty to pre-empt the law, comply and inform the prospective buyer. Personal influences may also play its part. If the sale is not closed, Nash's position with the company may be at threat and have consequences for the well being of his family. The friend may well act as a whistle-blower in any case. Nash may be shown at fault and be open to liability if the sale is made and Fledgling subsequently discovers the waste. The long-time friend may be lost as a result. An argument may be made to reveal the waste to the buyer but to negotiate a joint investigation as to the extent of any pollution. This may reduce the value of the land and the proceeds from the sale but means that Nash could sleep soundly, knowing that he has acted in good faith; reflecting his own moral standards. An alternative argument could be reasoned, that business is business and that there is some responsibility for Fledgling to have a full investigation of the land prior to purchase. Caveat emptor may apply (buyer beware) and that Nash's responsibility is...

Brenton Williams is the CEO of Desperate Air Corporation. George Nash is vice president of real estate. Williams has assigned Nash to find a buyer for the property. ...TELEVISION PORTRAYALS OF HOUSEWIVES IN THE 1950s VERSUS TODAY: I Love Lucy vs. Desperate Housewives The 1950s housewife was the epitome of a woman. She had poise and grace and cared for her family more than having a career. She had a smile on her face, dinner on the table, and her child always used please and thank you. At least on TV. Fast forward 50 years and much has changed in our history and the way that women are portrayed on television. With women no longer expected to give up their careers in order to raise a family, working moms are represented more with each passing decade. Two television shows that can be examined to explore the difference in television’s portrayal of housewives are I Love Lucy from the 1950s and Desperate Housewives from the 2000s. While the shows premiered more than a half a century apart, there are many similarities in the shows. And that’s not on accident. After World War II ended, men came home and families started growing and prospering, able to buy things they had to go without during the rough wartimes. With servicemen home and the baby boom well underway, women were expected to reclaim their dominance over the home, while their husband’s reclaimed dominance over them.1 Housewives were to be seen more than heard, all while keeping a smiling on their face. No one talked about their problems, because they didn’t really have any. The white picket fence was always perfect and no one ever raised their voice or drank too much, at least on the...

...Name: Professor: Course: Date: How Desperate House Wives Labels the “House Wives." Desperate Housewives (2004) is a comedy drama series about the secret lives of five women female characters who reside in Wisteria Lane, an American Suburb. Although the show was created in the 21st century, it does not make an accurate representation of women in the 21st century. The show portrays stereotypical female roles that range from the perfect mother to the usual trophy wives. This, therefore, shows that it is yet another example of misrepresented house wives, and although it is a 21st-century production, it employs a wide range of old stereotypes (Trier-Bieniek, & Patricia, 34). First of all, the title of the comedy drama is pregnant with negative connotations. At one time, this caused a lot of controversy in the U.S. when the President of the Parents Television Council, Mr. Brent Bozell criticized the comedy drama’s likely negative effect on morality in U.S society. Family values campaigners were enraged by the main theme of sex. Some critics described the show as treating the issues of infidelity lightly and portraying sex as gratuitous (Ruggerio, 15). Eddie portrays women as passive members of the society because she is successful in using her body and sexuality to get what she wants. For example, in her attempt to flirt with and seduce Carlos, she slowly takes off her clothes and is left standing with nothing other than her underwear illustrates that women are sexually...

And I come back to this: at the time I made those decisions, I made those decisions with the information that I had. I can look right at you and say, this is a pain that will stay with me for the rest of my life…” When Dick Fuld delivered these words to Congress, he was loudly berated for being insufficiently sorry for his role in the demise of Lehman Brothers—America’s biggest bankruptcy—in September 2008, a bankruptcy that triggered the near collapse of the global financial system. Yet Vicky Ward’s history of the last 25 years of the Wall Street investment bank, the final 15 under Mr Fuld’s watch, broadly supports the former chief executive’s assessment of himself. It offers no evidence of the alleged wrongdoing for which many people want to see him in court. Indeed, writes Ms Ward, a contributor to Vanity Fair magazine, “despite appearances and the endlessly self-perpetuated myth of being a mighty gorilla, Dick Fuld was never truly synonymous with Lehman.” Instead of the domineering king of the Lehman jungle, Mr Fuld was in reality merely a “lieutenant” to two more powerful leaders of the firm who technically served under him, Chris Pettit and then Joe Gregory. Well, maybe. Ms Ward’s account is engaging enough, though it suffers from the fact that both Mr Fuld and Mr Gregory refused to...

...Gender Stereotype By Menglu Wu Professor T. Hyland Writing 1021G Feb 15th, 2011 The Oxford English dictionary defines stereotype as “a widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing”. Society has formed the gender stereotypes that have four dimensions including traits, role behaviors, physical characteristics and occupations (Deaux and Lewis, 1984). I watched one episode of Desperate Housewives which talks about four housewives in the 7th season and found out some American gender stereotypes. Gabrielle, a model who is thin, sexy and beautiful, is married to a rich businessman. She has neither high academic degrees nor a steady job. Her daily routine is spending the money earned by her husband and enjoying lives. No matter how shallow a woman is, she can easily get what she wants if she has a slim figure and good look. Besides, Gaby’s husband is regarded as a successful man because he makes a lot of money and can afford their expensive cars and house. Meanwhile, Lynette was once a successful career woman and the financial support of the whole family. And her husband stayed at home to do the housework. However, she finally quitted her job and went back home to take care of her children and husband. From this result, men should be viewed as financial providers, whereas women should be viewed as caretakers. Last of all, the housewives have neighbors who are gays. When they moved in the town at first, they were not welcomed...

How can media not influence peoples lives? We see Brittney Spears singing in lingerie; hear about fat; perfect skin and told that is beauty! The photos we are seeing are almost allphoto shopped, those people dont exist. But yet our brain tells us we need to look likethem, we need to lose a lot of weight no matter what. Headlines in magazines aboutanorexia and bulimia give teenagers ideas. ——————————————————————————————————————–Desperate Housewives is the most popular broadcast-network television show according to statistics. In Desperate housewives you have four beautiful women that are married. In that series you have: adultery; underage drinking; bisexuality; blackmail;children running away and so much more. If this is what the youth of today take asentertaining, they are going to try the same things, try drugs; try bisexuality, start to disobeytheir parents and everything else they are witnessing. When one witnesses a lot of fighting;death and violence on the screen, they can become so used to it that they will stop feelingany sort of remorse if they hurt someone else. ...career. Grey's Anatomy shows that it does not matter what race you are or where you come from; a person can be successful without any of these factors making a difference. It also shows more diversity as it displays an African American doctor and an Asian doctor in a relationship, showing how interracial relationships are becoming more accepted and have evolved tremendously over time. These two races portrayed together much in the media and I think that it is good for popular television shows to popularize certain aspects of our culture that have not been made so public in the past. The sitcome, The Game, is another example of a show that depicts an interracial relationship as it shows a Cacausian female with an African American male. Desperate Housewives is another example of a show that promotes diversity. Eva...

...The many facets of Bree in Desperate Housewives Desperate Housewives (ABC 2004-2012) embodies many of the characteristics that the Suburban Gothic genre is trying to project. There is anxiety surrounding suburbanisation and the reality behind the nuclear family. This in turn brings up many issues regarding patriarchal society and the gender roles that are performed within this system. As the title suggests, the show centres around housewives, each with a different set of problems but ones that essentially culminate into the major problems of suppression, lack of identity, financial entrapment, sexuality in relation to men and the family, as well as the role of the woman in the home. The show has a serio-comic take on the issues mentioned above which allows the characters to publicly reveal their deepest secrets and have them criticised, satirized and related to by the other characters as well as the audience. This breaks with the normative ideology that is a result of the consistent repetition of (most times negative) images surrounding these gender roles. Instead of promoting the problematic behaviour and psychology that is depicted on the show, Desperate Housewives means to show audiences what is wrong with society through its characters and use of humour contrasted with disturbing elements. The character of Bree in the series is an example of how the postfeminist world is attempting to negotiate the role of women in society. Her psychology gives reason as to why her life...

...TEXTS AND COMPOSERS: Tim Winton’s – On Her Knees Topic: Importance of Dignity: Every person in this world is dignified in their own way; whether it is their riches, power, friends, family or even the smallest and most insignificant things, alot of things bring pride and dignity to one’s self. ”Pride” is an essential part of life as it gives self esteem and a feeling of self importance. Good morning/afternoon classmates; today I’ll be talking to you about the importance of dignity within Tim Winton’s “On Her Knees”. “On Her knees” is a powerful story that teaches and reinforces Tim Winton’s view of the true meaning of dignity. He accomplishes this through the use of “first person” making the text seem like an auto-biography of Carol, making her personal experiences seem more authenticated. Whether this story may be based on a true story or not, many of the occurrences within this short story are great examples of “The Importance Of Dignity”. Carol (the mother of Victor), quits her job as a specialized employee in a medical office, and instead becomes a maid to pay off her son’s law school fees. Victor during these troubled times feels guilty but most importantly feels that Carol’s dignity is devalued, perhaps even destroyed due to the fact that she cleans other peoples houses “on her knees”. Victor does not understand how Carol could do things to such an extent, despite having done so for his sake, as he understands that it is hurting his mother’s pride as a once respected...
