JOB DESCRIPTION & PERSON SPECIFICATION Job Title: Assistant Librarian, Wodehouse Library Reporting To: Head of Libraries A. JOB DESCRIPTION Job Purpose: Assisting the Head of Libraries in the management of the Wodehouse Library Core Duties: Ensuring that an effective lending and reference service is provided throughout the school day Assisting in the selection, ordering, processing and organisation of resources Promoting resources and reader development through displays and events (e.g. author talks) and the production of book lists Assisting in the provision of resources and support to teaching staff, including planning and implementing library‐based lessons and supporting their professional reading Assisting in the design and implementation of library induction courses and in the teaching of information skills as part of a formal programme throughout the College Assisting in management of the periodicals collections, including budgeting, selection, acquisition, organisation, and promotion of their use Managing the College’s online subscription services, and training boys & staff in their use Ensuring that pupils maintain an acceptable standard of behaviour in the Library and observe the rules Assisting in the maintenance of relevant statistics Assisting in regular stock checks Developing and maintaining the Library’s e‐book resources Developing and maintaining the Library’s online presence (Facebook and Twitter) Additional Duties: Assisting in the development and implementation of library policies Assisting in the monitoring and evaluation of library services Training and supervising library prefects Training and supervising pupil librarians Attending relevant school meetings and meetings of professional groups outside school Deputising for the Head of Libraries in his/her absence in the management of the College libraries Attend relevant training courses to ensure continuing professional development B. PERSON SPECIFICATION Essential Qualifications and Experience Qualified and experienced librarian Excellent IT skills, and knowledge of how to apply them in a school library environment Sound knowledge of literature for children and young people Enjoyment of reading, and ability to communicate that enjoyment to students Confidence in working with a rich cultural mix of students aged from 13 to 18 Ability to plan and teach an information skills programme, and to support students in their research
Desirable Qualifications and Experience Experience working in a school library Teaching experience/qualification Essential Technical Skills Sound knowledge of all MS Office applications, especially Word and Excel Experience of using a library management package Expertise in online searching using both the Internet and subscription services Expertise to assist in the introduction of e‐book lending Personal Qualities Energy, enthusiasm and a commitment to the key role of libraries in the learning process Flexibility and a willingness to undertake a wide range of library routines A confident but welcoming manner when dealing with library users of all kinds C. OUTLINE TERMS AND CONDITIONS Salary: Pro rata (76.26%) of £26,013 per annum. Working Year/Hours: This is a term time only position (35 weeks per year) plus 4 INSET days. Hours of work are 37.5 hours a week working Mondays, Tuesdays Thursdays and Fridays, from 9.15am to 5.15pm and Wednesdays, 8.00am to 4.00pm with half an hour’s unpaid lunch break. No. of Days Holiday: Pro rata of 20 days per annum + Bank Holidays. Your holidays will be paid to you. Entitlement increases to 25 days after completion of 5 years’ service.
