...Management of overweight and obesity in adults The proportion of Australians who are overweight or obese has increased markedly over the past 20 years. An estimated 2.5 million Australian adults (about 1 in 5 men and 1 in 6 women) are obese and a further 4.9 million are overweight but not obese, based on 2004–2005 data. A greater proportion of premature death and illness in Australia is now caused by excess body fat than by tobacco smoking or high blood pressure.1 Unhealthy weight gain occurs when energy intake from food is greater than energy expended through physical activity. Environmental, cultural, genetic and lifestyle factors all contribute to overweight and obesity. Physical inactivity and overeating are the major modifiable contributors to the problem of obesity. GPs, practice nurses, exercise physiologists, dietitians and other health professionals can help people correct the imbalance between energy intake and expenditure by giving reliable, individually tailored advice about physical activity, sedentary behaviours and long-term patterns of healthy eating. O besity is itself a disease state, and is also a risk factor for many chronic disease conditions. ...doubled in the past four years, rising from $11.5 billion to more than $23 billion. And sales of gluten-free food in America are forecast to grow by a further 61% by 2017, with similar increases expected in other rich countries. (“The article is Gluten-free” Vikram Mansharamani) Present and potential buyers It’s obvious that among consumers of gluten-free food we can count people who suffer from celiac disease, wheat allergy or non-celiac gluten sensitivity. However, demand doesn’t end here. Gluten-free diet quickly gained popularity both as a fad diet and as a part of healthy lifestyle. The view that gluten is bad not only for celiacs, but for everyone, is very popular now and is promoted by bloggers, well-known nutritionists and dietitians and celebrities (including Gwyneth Paltrow and Miley Cyrus). Strong belief that gluten free diet is beneficial for health results in more and...

...He said last Tuesday he walked past a group of kids from Pembroke School who had been in the playground, when they started to, “squeak, squeal and screech” at each other non-stop, a troubling sight to say the least. Tip 3: Eat metabolism-boosting foods. Sloths are herbivores meaning that they are lacking the essential nutrients such as fats and proteins that are needed for larger muscle mass and faster metabolism. If we let our metabolism peak to low, there is no doubt that our muscles will shrink, we will move slower and become lazier humans, beginning our transition into a nasty sloth. Leading dietitian Dr Tancredi from Core Nutrition South Australia told us that the top five foods for boosting your metabolism are almonds, beans, berries, chia seeds and celery, so start adding these into your everyday diet! Tip 5: File and cut your nails daily to prevent the growth of unsightly claws. To avoid growing the iconic, long, curved claws that a sloth has, always carry a nail file in your bag or wallet for...

...The importance of health education for children in early childhood and school settings Introduction Nutrition education in Australian schools is becoming a more prevalent issue than in the past due to the increasing obesity rate. Childhood obesity has accelerated rapidly into one of the most significant health problems as well as being a prominent concern for early childhood professions. Obesity is the largest nutritional problem among Australian children where childhood obesity has been estimated to be rising to the extent of 1% per year. If we take these statistics and skip forward to 2025 it translates to 50% of Australia’s young people will be overweight. Historically the family has been a child’s main source of education in regards to health through a combination of direct and indirect instruction, the child then models this behaviour. Teachers must now also be the facilitators of children’s health education to build on what children are learning from their family, the more knowledge they gain in regards to what keeps them healthy and why, the better prepared they will be for a healthy adult life. A correlation between Australian children’s health and wellbeing, and their educational prospects has been identified. (Mathews 2004) Educators have the opportunity through curriculum to develop strategies to support health and nutritional education in line with best practice by adhering to the Health Promoting Schools model There is hope that improved health education...

...garden cultivation, is not far behind meat regarding pollution. During the 1990's, there was a demand for healthier and more organic foods as consumers became more conscious on what they ate (Fig. 1). Randy Stringer's journal shows how the over-cultivation of Australian land began to contaminate the land with excessive water, fertilizer, and chemical use. Soon enough, environmental problems became linked with the over-farming of Australian land (Stringer). Fig. 1 Table showing the percentage change of products produced in Australia This comes to show that meat is not the only responsible food for the pollution of the land we live in. Instead, the growing demand for food has caused a decline of resources and land for those living in it. As mentioned above, people began to look for healthier options when they became aware of the potential harms of eating red meat. It was this discovery that soon created organizations that spoke negatively about meat. Dietitian and nutrition professor Winston Craig has written several journals regarding the fact that a person can be a vegetarian and still be healthy. In his journal, "Plant-Based Diets Provide Many Health Benefits" he argues that by not eating red meat, people are able to avoid high cholesterol, blood pressure, and the risk of diabetes (Craig). These ideas are supported by past experiments that prove that eating fruits and vegetables instead of meat have come to prevent diseases and have kept the human body healthy. It is for reasons...

...discrimination is stereotyping of and discrimination against individuals or groups because of their age. It is a set of beliefs, attitudes, norms, and values used to justify age based prejudice, discrimination, and subordination.1 Gerontology - is the study of the social, psychological and biological aspects of aging. It is distinguished from geriatrics, which is the branch of medicine that studies the diseases of the elderly.2 Geriatric Nursing - Nursing care of the aged patient given in the home, the hospital, or special institutions such as nursing homes, psychiatric institutions, etc.3 Issues Facing the Elderly Being old can mean being sick, poor, hungry and depressed, even in developed nations like Australia. What are the issues? In Australia, the ‘elderly’ is generally a reference to people over the age of 65. Lots of over 65ers lead healthy and empowered lives, and many are involved in community volunteering. But for the elderly, health can be a big concern. Their bodies are more susceptible to illness, they may be physically frail, and many are on medications which are costly and ongoing. An elderly person who is able to fund their own retirement is called a retiree. This means they had a job that paid them enough superannuation. Someone who is unable to fund their own retirement, and is paid welfare money by the government is called a pensioner. Pensioners may have difficulty affording medications or groceries on their allowance, especially if they...

...Reduction of Nosocomial Wounds Phillip Cook American Sentinel University Hospital acquired wounds or nosocomial wounds have been a problem to the health systems across America for some time. They can be caused by several factors such as pressure, friction, or shear. In 2008, The Centers for Medicaid and Medicare (CMS) began withholding payment for hospital acquired conditions such as pressure ulcers ("Centers for Medicare," 2012). Hospitals have placed a priority on identifying those patients that are high risk for nosocomial wounds as well as protocols for preventing the wounds. Background of the Project Nosocomial wounds are a possibility for any patient that is admitted to the hospital. Patients are admitted to hospitals in various physical conditions and nosocomial wounds are caused by several factors. According to the Mayo Clinic (Mayo Clinic staff, 2011), nosocomial wounds are a result of pressure on the skin that inhibits the blood flow to skin and underlying tissues. This may come as a result of different problems such as: 1. Sustained pressure from the skim being trapped between a boney prominence and a surface such as a wheelchair or a bed. 2. Friction from moist skin being pulled across a surface 3. Shear from two surfaces moving in the opposite direction such as the bed and the patient. This movement damages the tissue making it more vulnerable to sustained pressure. Add to this the compromised nutritional status of the patients and...
