...The Role of the Internet and Crime The internet has brought much advancement to our society. How we communicate with others and how we entertain ourselves has been greatly changed by the internet. We can stream videos, chat with friends, and purchase goods from any internet connected device. The internet has also brought many problems as well. Digital crime has been aided by the internet. The internet has given criminals a new avenue to do their deeds. Actions such as fraud, bullying, and sexual related crimes have all been aided by computers and their connection to the internet. Criminals have been committing fraud for ages. Fraud is defined as “an intentional deception made for personal gain or to damage another individual” (“Fraud”). Such things like the bait and switch have been going on well before the internet. A person is told that an item is being sold for a really low price so the person goes in to purchase said item. Once they get to the store, they are told the item is unavailable and are switched to a more costly item. With the internet has come advertising which can potentially do the same thing. Online dating sites also do this by posting fake profiles to entice people to join or once joined get messaged by a fake profile to entice you into upgrading your account to message back. Cave Paintings Cave paintings are the oldest form of Paleolithic art found to date, and can be found on almost every continent in the world. Until recently, the Chauvet cave paintings in France were believed to be the oldest, dating back to approximately 32,000 BCE; however, using carbon dating of the calcium deposits formed over the mineral-based paint, the cave paintings found in Spain’s are now believed to be over 40,000 years old (Than, 2012). Where would we be today without technology? Personally, I would be lost, from using my I-phone or setting my alarm to using my docking station for my music. Further intensified by the meteoric rise in Internet dating and mate selection, this bias often serves an invalidating function for darker-skinned women. This study (1) analyzed ‘profiles’ and ‘preferences’ of brides and grooms (N=200), and (2) coded ‘success story wedding photos’ (N=200) posted on four Indian matrimonial websites. Results showed an overwhelming bias among males for brides lighter-skinned than themselves. Males were also more likely than females to state a preference for skin color in their prospective brides, and to use qualitative words like ‘beautiful’ and ‘lovely’ to describe their preferred match. Most significantly, the ‘success story’ wedding photos consistently had lighter-skinned brides than grooms. ...Part I: The current State of the News Media The entrance into a new millennium has brought countless changes to the world as we know it. The time tested ways of old have all been subject to forces of change, which is fostered by advances in technology. The way people receive and view the media has not been immune to these changes. Current media is in a state of metamorphosis, undergoing great changes in its preferred medium, with research showing a clear shift from printed text to digital formats. In 2011, PEW research showed a stark change in media viewership -- a shift to digital media. Historically, news paper periodicals have been people’s primary method of receiving information, but in the 2000s that began to change; in 2011, forty-six percent of people received their media online compared to forty percent receiving it from a newspaper (Rosenstiel & Mitchell, 2011). This is not the only change. In 2011, forty-seven percent of Americans received some form of their news from a mobile device (Rosenstiel & Mitchell, 2011). The advent of these new mediums is slowly forcing out the old print methods. Continued advances in technology are only going to further increase the number of subscribers using portable media devices. These changes in media have received mixed responses from researchers. But what happens if this question is no long applicable or even necessary? Dystopian novels remove this illusion of choice. In each of the novels I will address, all teenagers attend or participate in a ceremony whereby they transition from young adult to adult. The first series I will address is Scott Westerfield’s Uglies series, where youth undergo plastic surgery as their rite of passage. Ever since I was a child this subject has intrigued me and have pointed me in the direction of the career choice that I made for myself many years ago.
