...McKenzie Foster March 4, 2015 Quantitive Reasoning HW 7 Dosages in Amounts What I found out in the excel worksheet was that there were a few errors made on how much was taken versus how much should have been taken. When it came to a female weighing 87 pounds (39.545455 kgs), the patient received over triple the amount prescribed to her. She was taking 3,837 milligrams per day, when she should have only been taking roughly 790.90 milligrams per day. There were three other discrepancies that I found within the information. A male weighing 63 pounds (28.636364 kgs) received 2,778 milligrams per day when he should have received around 575.72 milligrams. Another male weighing in at 32 pounds (14.545455 kgs) received 1,410 milligrams a day, when he should have received roughly 209.909 milligrams. Lastly, a female weighing in at 47 pounds (21.363636 kgs) was taking 2,073 milligrams, when she should have only received about 427.272 milligrams. My findings were that the patients that were under 100 pounds were getting the incorrect dosage. With some of the patients receiving the incorrect dosage, many find it to be the hospitals fault in most instances. I think that part of it was the hospitals fault for not double checking the correct dosages for their patients, but I also think the manufacturers could have also played a role in the incorrect dosages. However, it is the hospitals responsibility to make sure that their patients are receiving the correct amount because of accidents...

...The Medicines Company Case Write-Up: Terence Cho, Felipe Duarte, Aleks Loiko, Robert Shaw, and James Wang Section 4, Group 10 Medicines Company’s drug, Angiomax, outperforms Heparin, but incurs significantly higher costs to produce, making the drug difficult to attractively price. This difficulty in pricing stems from a poor positioning strategy for Angiomax which does not maximize the perceived value (PV) that the drug provides to its key customer segments. Therefore, Medicines Co., must develop a positioning strategy that maximizes the perceived value of Angiomax. Medicines Co. must first determine the critical characteristics its key customer segments (doctors, hospital administrators, and pharmacists) value in an anticoagulant (Appendix A). Medicines Co. should then develop a positioning statement that highlights Angiomax’s strengths for its most compatible customer segment – doctors. The positioning statement for doctors would be “Angiomax outperforms Heparin in high-risk patients resulting in significantly fewer complications while performing angioplasty procedures”. The focus should be on doctors because of the high overlap between Angiomax’s benefits and doctors’ values in an anticoagulant. Additionally, by providing doctors with information (Appendix B) that quantifies the cost savings from reduced complications in high-risk patients, Medicines Co. bridges the gap between the true economic value (TEV) and the PV that doctors have for Angiomax. This solution...

For parents giving out medicine to kids poses a threat because they could accidentally dish out too much medicine without knowing better. Tylenol has two very different kids medicine that gets easily confused because the two products look very similar. Parents purchase one for kids for their infants and then give them the “proper” dosage which is actually a lot for a newborn. This causes health risks such as liver damage, coma and death. This is not properly labeled on the container of medicine because Johnson and Johnson fear that proper labeling will drive down costs and that they will lose money in the long run. Over 100 law suits have been filed against Johnson and Johnson because of their Tylenol medicine poisoning. For Johnson and Johnson would rather pay settlements than have to lose profits from having a proper labeling system. Therefore consumers do not know the risks involved with the medicine that they are taking and that hurts the consumers. Problems: The biggest problem Johnson and Johnson face according to this article is a lack of labeling. Consumers need a better labeling system that speaks about the side affects and risks of taking too much Tylenol. Consumers not knowing better take too much medicine and taking too much can hurt or kill a person. Overdosing is a big problem. If Johnson and Johnson added the...

...Grant Dr. Theodore Gorczyca MAT 510 – Business Statistics February 5, 2016 The prescription filling process of the health maintenance organization (HMO) consists of the doctor sending the prescription to the pharmacy via paper with the patient, paper to the nurse who calls in the prescription with instructions, or faxing the prescription to the pharmacy. From there, the personnel at the pharmacy fill the prescription by inputting the information given to them into their computer in order to print the instructions and medication labels for the prescriptions. They then pull the requested medications per the instructions, fill the necessary containers to give to the patients, and label them accordingly. Patients then receive their medicines and take them according to the instructions printed on the labels by the pharmacy per the doctor. There are many activities involved in this process that can cause issues. There are various reasons prescriptions can be filled inaccurately from the beginning (which can be considered the supplier portion of the SIPOC model) of the process. Interviews with pharmacy assistants indicate that doctors’ handwritings’ are difficult to decipher, and hence an area of concern when this information is given on paper to read in person or by facsimile copy. The person receiving the information in this format has the task of reading it, and interpreting what the doctor is trying to convey. If the paper is given to a nurse to call into the pharmacy...

...more than 41 percent of prescription medicine expenses" (Wolfe). This means that this low population of people are being prescribed either too many drugs at one time, high dosages of these drugs, or high quantities of each prescription. In America, there is even a recommended limit from the federal government to try and combat these problems with addiction, but it is not a law, it is a recommendation. "American doctors give their patients narcotic painkillers, 99 percent of them hand out prescriptions that exceed the federally recommended three-day dosage" ("Almost"). Not only is it a problem that doctors go over the three day limit that is suggested by the American federal government, but it raises the question of how far these doctors go in their dosages to patients. In a survey done by the NSC, they found that one-fourth of doctors gave out narcotic prescriptions for month-long doses, although using narcotic painkillers for a month has been found to cause brain changes ("Almost"). When prescriptions are used at high dosages for too long, the patients run a seriously high risk of forming a dependence on these...

...anti-depressant team was formed to find and develop a drug that would be the successor to Prozac. The strategic issues and problems they faced were developing a new drug to replace Prozac, meeting the company budget constraints to perform clinical trials, and finally launch the new drug by mid-2001. The analysis and evaluation revealed that the pharmaceutical industry is changing fast and it usually takes a long time and millions of dollars to develop a new drug. The recommendation for Eli Lilly is to take the lead in developing the new drug Cymbalta, invest a stable share of the company revenue, seek the FDA approval for the development of Cymbalta before going to market, and not change their market plan from the FDA approved Cymbalta dosage of 20 mg twice daily. Introduction Eli Lilly and Company was founded by Colonel Eli Lilly, Lilly’s namesake, in 1876 when he purchased a laboratory on Pearl Street in Indianapolis, Indiana. Eli Lilly was a pharmacist who had served in the Union Army during the Civil War. The company success included creating the process for applying gelatin-coating to pills for easier swallowing and the introduction of Iletin which was the first mass-produced insulin. Iletin and Lilly’s insulin products improved the treatment for diabetes.
