If one were to pass by the ERC in November through January they'd most likely see a bunch of students working on computers, performing in classrooms, or talking to walls. The odd sight you are witnessing in the ERC is the speech gym. But, if you walk by the ERC in February it is a much smaller group of twelve students, working until the long hours of the night. These students are the state series representatives.
Speech is a competitive activity in which student are able to participate in fourteen events, in the areas of public speaking, acting, or interpretation. In most tournaments there are generally three preliminary rounds of competition, and the top-ranking competitors in each event advance to the final round.

Baise tells a story about what happens when he gets left behind by his family and he has to find his way to Oregon. So, he takes the legendary Oregon Trail, and meets many friends along the way.
In Humorous Interpretation, junior, Sarah Lehrer, portrays a little girl who asks for a brontosaurus for her birthday, but when her parents tell her no, she runs away into the forest and meets many animals. HI, is an event where the speakers acts out various characters, in a published piece. The actors usually do this by having different stances and voices for each character.
AJ Struthers, senior, has been the state series speaker for Impromptu Speaking. In this event the performers are given a list of either three quotations, proverbs, or phrases, and in two minutes they must take their previous knowledge to deliver a six minute speech on the topic they choose.
Informative Speaking is an event where one can pick any topic to research and inform the audience on the subject. This year senior, Morgan Saladino, chose to speak about the animal goldfish. She reveals to us how there is so much more to goldfish, than just a snack that smiles
