...I believe that in one point of our life, everyone feels that it is in nowhere, like Judy Copeland Copeland Copeland in "The Way I've Come" and Colleen Kinder in "Blow Out". Both essays express the theme of being in "nowhere" very differently, but precisely. In "The Way I've Come" by Judy Copeland Copeland we can see in the first sentence, "how the author place a sense that she is in "nowhere" when she says” Alone on the grassy airstrip..." Judy Copeland tells her story of being far away from her place to a place where she feels different, just because now after being doing things for herself for so long, she is getting help from others, in this sentence " I've been a solo hiker for almost 40 years, even since I was two" here we can see how...

...American soul, which successfully portrayed the cheers and tears of the 1920’s, or “roaring 20’s” in United States, the reality under disguised of surreal fantasy of commercialism and materialism. In this story, there were three significant places the storyline breed and grows. Among them, the most significant West Egg, the settlement for Nouveau Riche, filled with residences who believe they achieved the American Dream, but in fact, ruined by the Dream; besides, the East Egg, a place for the proud “old money”, that believe themselves as “born and breed riches”, the upper class, represent the ultimate goal of American Dreams, that is empty and shallow. Last but not least, The Valley of Ashes, sheltered the people who blindfolded by American Dream, spent days and nights to serve the riches and believe that one day they’ll become one, and who at last realized that the dream bring nothing but destruction. First, the nouveau rich settlement in Long Island, the West Egg, is a shelter for sad people who thought themselves work hard enough and achieved the American Dream. In the beginning of the story, the narrator, Nick Carraway told us about his background as an “old money” descendent, but decided to venture out his comfort shelter, in search of a new and independent life. Nick eventually became a neighbor of Jay Gatsby, a rich man who throws party almost every day, in the West Egg. We can see the crassness of the house in West Egg, Gothic style tower and some mismatch details, desperately...

...American Dream is difficult to achieve. There are several examples of this theme, including George and Lennie, Curley's wife, Candy, and Crooks. One of the first examples of this theme can be seen in the chapter that is focused on Crooks the stable buck. In this chapter Crooks was at first shooting down Lennie’s idea that he and George were going to own land. “You're nuts. I seen hundreds of men come by on the road an’ on the ranches, with their bindles on their backs...an’ every damn one of ‘em’s got a little piece of land in his head. An’ never a God damn one of’ em gets it,” (72 ). Crooks starts off in denial, but after Lennie continues to talk about it and after Candy tells about how they already have the money he is convinced and even asks if he can join in on the plan. But Crooks' hope about finally being able to do something and not be ruled by anyone is short lived due to being belittled by Curley's wife. After he stands up to her she gets angry and reminds him that because he is black he doesn't have the power to do anything and she could easily get him hanged if she wanted to. Her words discourage Crooks and make him feel dumb for thinking he was actually going to be able to live on his own land and be free to do what he wants. Crooks re-realizes how...

...insignificant, they display true ignorance and obliviousness. The singer yearns to be a child and have such mentalities, but as he cannot, he sees no reason to exist. Lyrically the song is pretty loose. It throws together a lot of different images to paint a picture without saying anything specific about the world. He starts the song off with “All around me are familiar faces, Worn out places, worn out faces. Bright and early for their daily races, going nowhere, going nowhere. Their tears are filling up their glasses. No expression, no expression. Hide my head I want to drown my sorrow, no tomorrow, no tomorrow” (line 1-8). The familiar faces, worn out places, and worn out faces indicate that he has seen all their is to see, and that to him, all faces look the same, worn out and tired of life. If one considers the commute from home to work, at the end of the day its just the same cycle over again the next day. He continues to wonder where life is really going. When he sings bright and early for their daily races, going nowhere, he means the daily races of our lives. How busy and how hectic they can be. We all wake up bright and early as if there was a purpose, but in the end we don't go anywhere. He believes we have no purpose. The tears filling up the glass indicates the meaninglessness and bitterness they must feel, if they are to drink their own tears. To swallow your own tears without expression is extreme. Meaning there is no feeling...

...Kosowicz Nessler 4/5/06 Pd. 1 Dreams Dreams are an essential and important part of life. Most people want to make money; others may be looking for love. Whether someone is big or small, they all have dreams. The poem “A Gift to a Dream” by Cindy M. and the book Of Mice and Men, J. Steinbeck show that dreams are very important to someone’s lifestyle. Dreams give us a reason to continue on when life gets tough. “A Gift to a Dream”, by Cindy M. is a poem about dreams giving hope and faith. The poem reads, “hold on to your dreams, they are a doorway.” This means that when things are tough, dreams allow you to still have hope. It also states dreams, “give us a will and strength to fight with.” Dreams ease the monotony of life. The author uses a metaphor when stating, “dreams are a doorway” by comparing the dream to a doorway. This means that dreams help you find comfort and peace in a world full of chaos. They give you hope to carry on when you think there is nowhere else to go. This poem shows this about dreams. In the book Of Mice and Men, by J. Steinbeck, Lenny and George used their dream to get through daily life and make it more tolerable. George and Lenny had a dream that helped them move on in times of trouble. George telling stories was a way of rebooting hope to move on and keep going when they thought that life couldn’t get any worse. It helped them to escape reality. Candy felt useless until he had the dream and was part of George and Lenny’s hope. Candy...

...Dreams My dream started out with a huge unrecognizable, scary creature chasing me at full speed. No matter how fast I ran, I wasn't able to gain enough ground to outrun the creature and hide. I was approaching a huge cliff with nowhere else to turn. I looked behind me and i had no other choice but to jump. I reached the bottom surprisingly at an okay state, and i looked up and saw the creature falling above turn into a thousand little daisys. At that moment I woke up. In Pyschology, when dealing with dreams, there are theories that pyschologists go by to interpret and give meaning to our thoughts that go on at night. The three main theories are evolutionary circadian theory which deals with part of circadian rhyths, sleep evolved to conserve energy and to serve as protection from predators. The second one is repair/restoration theory which is sleep that serves a recuperative function, allowing organisms to repair or replenish key factors. The last is Information Consolidation Theory of Sleep which means based on cognitive research and suggests that people sleep in order to process information that has been acquired during the day Based on the theories above, the theory that best supports my dream would by the information consolidation theory. It was clearly a night-terror where i wasn't able to gain control of the situation and gain conscience. Thinking back to that day, i had read an article about a murder about a young girl. It might have been related to the helplessness...

June 19, 2013, 05:05 http://www.rubenblades.com/lyrics/?currentPage=5. When listening to the lyrics of this song it reminds me of people like my mother and father who to me relate more to the familiar version of “The American Dream”. I grew up in Puerto Rico and have seen the struggles of my family to give us enrichment in life, within our home and education. For my family it has been easier to convert to the norms and values of the United States, but for...

...Dare To Dream The beauty of dreaming is amazing, it can take you anywhere in reality. What I dream of is a goal to be set, it is a journey to be taken. When I dream, I force myself to take the challenge and walk into unknown grounds to bring everything I dream into a reality. Some of these day time dreams would come to reality, like the time I dreamed of becoming good in math, but some dreams are not meant to be and other could be way to far from our hands. Some when realized fulfill you of happiness and you just want to live in that moment. I believe that dreams are like a treasure to be search for and discovered. The first time I found myself chasing my dreams was when I was in the fifth grade. It all started by the middle of the last semester, we were learning long division, but my background in math was really bad. I was lucky to know how to add. I was never a good student, but it was difficult for me to concentrate and pay attention. During class I would picture myself being the best in every subject, especially math. I desired that dream to be true more than anything, so I decided to bring it to life. First I tried to concentrate, but it was difficult. Months passed and I kept struggling with long divisions. One day I was trying to solve a long division for my homework, I started to analyze the equation and ask myself questions about it, then I discovered how to solve them. At the end of the year I was awarded a diploma for my achievement in math. Ever since, I...

...I knew at that time in my life that I wanted to work in the criminal justice field I wanted to solve crimes, be a hero, and most importantly give back to my community. That dream brought me the kind of joy that a parent may experience while witnessing their child take their first steps. It gave me a purpose to fulfill in my transition to adulthood, and like any kid I was ready and eager for the challenge. What I wasn’t ready for was the parade of people routing against those very dreams that consumed my identity. I felt broken at some point I started to question my ambitions, and I asked myself if I was trying to reach a dream that was to out of reach. Society had idealized my future for me and it was nowhere near my dream. There were moments where I wanted to just accept what was expected of me, but I realized that by complying it would only hurt me in the end. I refused to give up on my dreams so I stayed ambitious, determined, and ready to push past any obstacle that stands in the way of that fulfillment. I am a high school senior graduating top twenty five percent of my class and I am involved in numerous extra-curricular activities which I excel greatly...

...Not long ago, a young lad was standing in the dead centre of nowhere. He was scrambling to see anything. After a while, everything went colourful , but soon after he heard breathing. He started wondering what and where it was coming from? When things became 101% clear, he saw in the corner of his eye a shadow of a beast that was coming close. Suddenly, something made him frolic with fear, he aimed to make a run for the closest civilisation he could find but he went numb with fear. The breath of the beast was so strong, the man could smell it from a distance. As the mysterious figure came from the shadow, It turned out it was a legendary beast known as a Griffin. But as the man was glancing at it, the man noticed something that made him swallow with disgust, in its mouth was a big, brown free range chicken. The man was so disgusted about how that Griffin gobbled that chicken up so fast he didn’t notice anything irregular going on in the backdrop. But then he did notice something going on, when he heard it, he could tell it was coming up closer by the second, the man started thinking he was back at his childhood farm and that his old horse was standing before him. “ I must be dreaming” the man wondered to himself “My horse died a long time ago and I’m pretty sure that Griffins weren’t around at that time?” but a that time, he realised that the horse standing before him, in fact, wasn’t a horse. ...Crooks says when he hears of Lennie’s dream to own his own farm, “Nobody ever gets to heaven, and nobody gets no land.” George and Lennie’s dream of owning a farm, which would enable them to sustain themselves, and, most important, offer them protection from an inhospitable world, represents a typically American ideal. The Futility of the American Dream (*In the context of the novel!!): Their journey, which awakens George to the impossibility of this dream, sadly proves that the bitter Crooks is right: such paradises of freedom, contentment, and safety are not to be found in this* world. George and LEnnies dream: The farm that George constantly describes to Lennie—those few acres of land on which they will grow their own food and tend their own livestock—is one of the most powerful symbols in the book. It seduces not only the other characters but also the reader, who, like the men, wants to believe in the possibility of the free, idyllic life it promises. Candy is immediately drawn in by the dream, and even the cynical Crooks hopes that Lennie and George will let him live there too. A paradise for men who want to be masters of their own lives, the farm represents the possibility of freedom, self-reliance, and protection from the cruelties of the world. George and Lennie's desire to have a piece of property that is all their own and to "live off the fatta the lan'" is a recurring motif in the story (13). They build their dream up to such an extent that even if they...

...after she had been unable to have children for seven years. Joseph was Jacob’s 11th son, and his favorite, born when he was very old. Jacob made Joseph a beautiful robe that had many colors in it. Jacob would often send Joseph to spy on his brothers and to report back to him any behavior that was considered inappropriate. The brothers knew Joseph was watching them and their hatred for him grew even more for telling Jacob what they were doing. Joseph also had special dreams in which he could predict things that would happen in the future. When Joseph told the brothers of his dreams, they wanted to know what he could see. He told them that in the first dream, sheaves of wheat that belonged to them were going to bow to his sheaf. In the second dream, he told them that the sun, moon and eleven stars were going to bow to him. When Joseph was 17 years old, he worked with his brothers as shepherds. One day Jacob sent Joseph to see what the brothers were doing in Shechem. When Joseph got there, the brothers were nowhere to be found. A man told him where they were, so he went to Dotham to see what they were up to. Though he was trying not to be seen by the brothers, he was spotted anyway. Before he could reach them, they had already come up with a plan between them to kill Joseph. The brothers tore his robe off and threw him in a pit. Reuben had talked the brothers into throwing him in the pit instead of killing him so that he could come back later and save him. Later that evening,...

...Dreams Not Fulfilled Dreams play a big role in many people’s lives whether it’s an achievable dream or not. Mostly everyone has dreams that they are aiming to accomplish. In the novel, Of Mice and Men written by John Steinbeck, dreams are a major part of the story because most characters have one. Dreams are something that everyone wants to achieve because they give people hope, but sometimes those dreams are crushed and never get accomplished. Many characters in this novel have or had dreams that they were aiming for which is a major part in the story. In chapter 1, George tells Lennie, “- we’re gonna get that jack together and we’re gonna have a little house and a couple of acres an’ a cow and some pigs.” (p.14) This shows that George and Lennie dream of living off of a piece of land that they will own. They already have in mind what they want since George explained it with detail. They just have to work hard for it. Another character, Curley’s wife, tells Lennie, “Coulda been in the movies, an’...

...sent the dreams of hundreds of thousands of people trying to graduate college crashing down. Several years ago, and seemingly out of nowhere, accusations came flying from all directions about pre-need companies. According to the accusations, they were either bankrupt or nothing but a scam, depending on which company you are looking at. And since a large portion of Filipino families relied on these pre-need companies in order to send their children to college, widespread panic ensued the moment these accusations hit the press. The biggest company to suffer was the pioneer in the industry, a company called College Assurance Plan or CAP. The CAP Family of Companies began in 1980 with the birth of its mother company - College Assurance Plan. CAP has since expanded its business to the areas of Pre-need Pension, Distance Learning, Health Maintenance, Life Insurance, Information Technology, Financing, Communications and General Insurance. It is a group of companies that the Filipino family can trust for an assured and better future – to hold on to as a true and reliable partner through the next millennium. It is also a growing and dynamic corporate family capable of serving each and every Filipino family's pre-need and insurance requirements. They had the largest number of plan holders subscribed to their pre-need education plan compared to any other pre-need company. This company was brought to its knees when certain government officials of the Philippines, came out of nowhere and publicly...
