...Macias, Prescilla Prof. Conde ENC 1102 9am 11 April 2016 Fireflies by Owl City portrays to various subjects such as sleep, dreams and fantasies. In this song the artist mentions his incapability to have a good night’s rest, however, he imagines so much. The artist has insomnia and has always had a tough time falling asleep for as long as he can remember. He wanted to sing about his inability to sleep in a whimsical way that portrayed the condition as lighthearted and almost more of a 'blessing' than a curse. It's ironic that when sleep and him cannot bring themselves to meet is often when inspiration strikes hardest to the artist. When asked about this song the artist mentioned "I was up late and in the basement one night when I wrote Fireflies. I was sitting at the keyboard just fooling around, not really trying to write anything. Over the next couple of hours that song came together in the most natural way. I can't explain it but it almost wrote itself.” In the first verse, he sings “You would not believe your eyes if ten million fireflies lit up the world as I fell asleep.” This line is an example of a hyperbole. The singer is trying to allow you to relate to how many fireflies there actually are. He does this by greatly over exaggerating the quantity of the fireflies and how much light they're giving off. In your mind, when you think of ten million, you're picturing a ridiculous amount. The diameter of Earth is 7,918 miles, so that's about 42...

...In Peter Singer’s article “Singers Solution to World Poverty” suggest that U.S. citizens give away the majority of their dispensable income in order to end global suffering. Singer uses some extreme methods in order to achieve his goal of getting readers to truly believe in his ideas and change their values and lifestyles. Singer gathers his information and unique capabilities to determine the voice in this article and rewrite the tone being given in the conversation. The author’s main point is that many people spend too much money on food just by wasting time with their lives and instead we have starving countries eating leftovers by these people. The use of this points out that the author believes in moralistic and compassionate values. In addition, Peter Singer loves to judge whether acts could be right or wrong by their course of actions. Singer’s Solution did not seem to evaluate into account the long term effect it may have caused. He may have convinced many people to follow in his choice of actions, but certainly not me. All humans have the right to their mortality when they want to buy a certain item in favor of their exquisite needs. In a hypothetical situation, Singer describes a man named Bob and his love for his uninsured Bugatti. Bob has just used up the greater part of his nest egg on an extremely valuable classic automobile. He loves his car not only because he enjoys driving it around, but also because its value continues to go up. This strategy makes Bob happy...

...us to John Singer and Spiros Antonapoulos, two good friends who live together in a town in the Deep South and who are both deaf-mutes. Antonapoulos works in his cousin's fruit store, and Singer works as a silver engraver in a jewelry shop. They spend ten years living together in this way. One day Antonapoulos gets sick, and even after he recovers he is a changed man. He begins stealing and urinating on buildings, and exhibiting other erratic behavior. Finally, Antonapoulos's cousin sends him to a mental asylum, although Singer would rather have Antonapoulos stay with him. After Antonapoulos leaves, Singer moves into a local boarding house in town run by a family named the Kellys. The narrator then introduces us to Biff Brannon, the proprietor of the New York Café, the establishment in town where Singer now eats all his meals. Biff is lounging on the counter watching a new patron named Jake Blount, as the constantly drunk Jake is intriguing. Blount goes over and sits with Singer and begins talking to him as though the two are good friends. Then Singer leaves. Once Jake realizes in his drunken stupor that Singer has left, he goes into an alley and begins beating his head and fists against a brick wall until he is bruised and bloody. The police bring Jake back to the café, and Singer volunteers to let the drunk stay the night with him. The narrative shifts to the perspective of Mick Kelly, the young teenage daughter of the couple who own the boarding house where Singer is staying...

...takes…”(p.84). Veronica Yonker, a seventeen-year old girl, who dreams big in the post-apartheids era, may have just been the breakthrough for many young strong women of South Africa. These words, coming from a white man( the AUTHOR), was the last boost she needed to go get and live her biggest dream in Johannesburg, as a black girl coming from the Valley. Veronica was born and grew up in the Valley, in the shadows of her mother and grandfather, but in the light of her loving grandfather. Being the sweet, innocent, obedient and respectful child, as she was, pleasing her grandfather and growing up, in the same way her mother did, she was not stuck in her past. She had her own dreams- and dreaming big, she did- and plans for her own future. And reaching these dreams was her passion. Especially her dream of becoming a famous singer. Veronica, not being stuck in her past, strengthens her believes in reaching her dream. She wants to do things differently than in the past “… and all that talk that was going on about how things was going to change and be different from now on.”(p. ). And by this means, not ending up spending her future days, cleaning and scrubbing floors in a white man’s house “…you will never see me on my knees scrubbing a white man’s floor”(p.68). This, however, was the planned future for most of the young black women in that time, especially those living on a farm. But Veronica Yonker had this dream and passion, that carried her through every day and through every...

...In “The Singer Solution to World Poverty”, Peter Singer describes how the American consumer is in moral denial because of our failure to donate money that could save a child’s life from starvation, mal nutrition, or treatable diseases. In his article he highlights how we are not fully considering what in our lives is a luxury and what is a necessity. Another interesting concept Singer has is his actual solution to world poverty, which basically describes people donating any money not spent on necessities to charities. Although, I am in line with the fact that the U.S. consumer has been brainwashed into thinking they are purchasing necessities and have shown a lack of judgment for understanding when they are purchasing necessities versus when they are purchasing luxuries, I do not agree that is a reason to give away all of your extra income to charities around the world. This is an extremely unrealistic amount that does not align with how a large population of our society thinks about personal wealth. The words need and want are used interchangeably in American culture and this causes us to trick ourselves into believing we should be buying unnecessary items. For example, even when we are speaking about things we want, we often say we need them because it highlights how badly we want that item. Things that you want could give you a goal to work towards, but when you think about things that you need you are liable to feel bad about yourself or less than others if you do not have...

...“Right now the only thing that I am concerned with in my life is being an artist. I had to suppress it for so many years in high school because I was made fun of, but now I’m completely insulated in my box of insanity and I can do whatever I like” These truly inspirational words spoken by Lady Gaga put my whole life in words. Although I hadn’t been teased for believing in my dream of becoming a well known actor I did however have that dream somewhat suppressed by teachers, family and other authorities by a list of cliché jobs which I believe I was not meant to do. Although I simply agreed to give these careers paths a chance, secretly I was only focussing on my dream. I set my self a goal to focus upon things to make my dream become reality. Suddenly a pop singer by the name of Lady Gaga popped out from her glitter world onto the pop charts. At first glance I paid no attention to her but after listening to her songs and analysing their meanings I decided to give the artist a chance. I realised that on a first glimpse Lady Gaga appears to be nothing but another blonde pop singer desperate for attention, but soon realised that she is much more. I realised that Lady Gaga is a true inspiration. She spent most of her high school years focussing on her academic studies hoping to one day put them into her performances. Lady Gaga was born in New York City and Acquired the name Joanne Stefani Germonatta at birth. But her producer gave her the name Gaga as he noticed she was eccentric...

June 19, 2013, 05:05 http://www.rubenblades.com/lyrics/?currentPage=5. When listening to the lyrics of this song it reminds me of people like my mother and father who to me relate more to the familiar version of “The American Dream”. For my family it has been easier to convert to the norms and values of the United States, but for others I have seen...

...Clark. The theme in the text is the desire to fulfill your dreams. However it’s not always as easy to succeed in the things you want the most. “Elephant” opens in medias res, as we’re being thrown into a world where William is sitting by his desk, surrounded by a pile of notes and facts. Already in the beginning of the text we’re able to see that William encounters problems with his writing. He states that the skill to being a good writer is commitment, and not inspiration. “This inability to write a word had gone on for weeks. His own adage that writing was 99 percent about commitment not inspiration had not helped him shift a single page in all that time” this also indicates that he may have lost the motivation to write. The reader also becomes more aware of the kind of depressing feeling in the house. “The house was quiet. It was early afternoon, drawing towards a shining evening. The closed curtains of his study glowed with brilliant sunshine. Writing was impossible for William if there was a view onto the garden…” . The short story is told by a third person narrator, but we also hear about William’s thoughts and therefor we relate to him. Whilst reading the story we feel sorry for him. William is not happy with what he writes a about. He writes biographies of pop singers, when all he really wants is writing about movie stars, but someone where quicker to get the job. “William wrote biographies of pop singers. Female, alive, young, career-to-date. They were short biographies...

...may be the way Connie ends up but that is definitely not the way most teenage girls mature. I do not think the story is entirely about Connie’s initiation into sexual bondage. It is simply a story about a creepy man that tries to lure in a typical young girl and ultimately interact sexually. According to Larry Rubin Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been? is all one big dream about her fear of the adult world. I definitely see why this interpretation is possible. Connie has an overall feeling of not having control over the situation she is in which happens in most bad dreams. Rubin explains the similarities of Arnold to that of which Connie already knows before meeting Arnold, such as his voice is the same as some disc jockey on the radio. This is very common in dreams, things from your real life somehow show up differently in dreams. The fact that Connie could not even dial the phone number when she felt in danger is a sign that it is a possibility that it was all a dream. Connie literally felt paralyzed which happens often in dreams just like you can never scream when you are in danger during a dream. According to Joyce M. Wegs the character of Arnold in Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been? is a clear symbolism of Satan. I agree that Arnold is a Satanic figure, but I disagree that...

...Shreeti Sigdel Hamilton AP English III/5th 20 September 2013 The American Dream For generations, the American dream has floated around society in different forms. In the 19th century, it was viewed as an independent and cowboy-worthy lifestyle, whereas in the early 20th century, it corresponded to nationalism and unity. In today’s society, young generations often fantasize the lavish lifestyle of Beyoncé and Justin Timberlake while declaring it their American dream. The origin of the term dates back to 1931, where it was first coined in James Truslow Adams’ The Epic of America. Adams claims that the egalitarian nature of this dream began to take shape when the early Puritan colonists settled in America with the hopes of living in freedom from governmental persecution. Like the Puritans, millions of immigrants leave their country every year with the hopes of building a better life. Because of different generations’ perspective and individual values, it is difficult to assign a certain definition to the American dream. For example, to some people, the dream is often associated with success, while to others, it corresponds to future family stability. Whatever the version may be, America’s countless prospects guarantee every American the opportunity to achieve their dream through hard work and dedication. While every American has heard the phrase, “American Dream” at least once in their lifetime, every non-American has heard it at least a 100 times. The opportunity to live...

...fail, while your closest would love du see you succeed. Everybody have a dream. A dream about becoming something big and great. Having a nice job with a good salary, an expensive car and house. And if you don’t achieve any of this, your life will feel like a mistake. You will feel like a complete fail. You want to isolate yourself from others. Even those who support you. You are pausing your life, because you don’t know what to do. This story “Elephant” is written by Polly Clark in 2006. It starts in media res, because we are unexpectedly standing in a dark room where a person named William is sitting with a computer, some notes and facts. A third person narrator tells the story, but we hear Williams’s thoughts through out the story, and because of that we directly recognize us with him. William Is married to Ginny and have 7 children, all of them which are girls. “He glanced up at the bookshelf above his computer at his girls: Sophie, Witney, Norah, Becky, Christine, Maria, Britney. “Page 1 line 16-18. His relationship with his wife is almost only about making children. ”Well done, darling, she said. Then, “I know this isn’t much fun for you.” Page 2 line 82. She loves it, and thinks he doesn’t. Their relationship is seems to be like a more like “Friends with benefits” than a marriage, because right after they had sex Ginny would leave again. Williams job is writing about biographies of pop-singers, whom he doesn’t enjoy. He would have preferred to write about the film stars...
