1. HECHOS Y PERSONAJES

Ducati es una empresa italiana fabricante de motocicletas, fundada en 1926 en Bolonia (Italia), quienes en 1952 diseñaron su primera motocicleta. Actualmente se considera una de las marcas más importantes en el sector del motociclismo comercial y deportivo.

Ducati fue fundada en 1926 como una empresa familiar y otros inversionistas para producir equipo para radio.

En 1954, Fabio Taglioni, un ingeniero visionario, empezó a producir motos, las cuales estaban avanzadas estética y técnicamente. Esto hizo que Ducati se posicionara en el mercado de las motos.

Las carreras de motos empezaron justamente luego de que las motos fueron inventadas, las cuales estaban categorizadas por el tamaño del motor.

A finales del 1990, empezaron los rumores que dentro del circuito de Grand Prixincluirían una categoría mayor, llamada MotoGP, los cuales se hicieron realidad en 2000 cuando anunciaron formalmente el circuito.

Ducati, no se unió inmediatamente a otras empresas como Honda, quienes empezaron a desarrollar nuevas motos para competir en dicha carrera, a pesar de que dicha carrera podía darles otra oportunidad para construir y competir con una nueva moto, pero consideraron que era riesgoso y caro.

A pesar de ello, en 2001, Ducati anunció que participarían en el circuito de MotoGP, empezando en el 2003 a partir de lo cual empezaron a crear la moto para dicha carrera, tomando en cuanta diferentes factores de diseño, velocidad, y tecnología.

Sin embargo, para la fabricación de la nueva moto, debían de tomar en cuenta diferentes factores como el diseño, la construcción y mejoramiento de las motos, así como las simulaciones realizadas.

En la temporada 2003, los resultados obtenidos excedieron las expectativas, ya que Ducati terminó en el segundo lugar del campeonato mundial después de Honda. Sin embargo, era necesario que fabricaran una mejor motocicleta tomando en cuenta las simulaciones realizadas y áreas de oportunidad detectadas.

En Noviembre del 2004, Filippo Preziosi, el director técnico de Ducati voló de la sede de Ducati en Italia a España, en donde se había llevado a cabo la final de la carrera de motocicletas MotoGP dos años antes.

Preziosi era el encargado de diseñar dicha carrera, tomando en cuenta una nueva moto. Sin embargo, él y su equipo debían de enfocarse en una producción completamente nueva, con la ayuda de la IT.

La moto final, incorporó varias innovaciones anteriores de Ducati pero al mismo tiempo las extendió. Las motos estaban equipadas con sensores que recababan la información a través de su utilización y los comentarios de los usuarios para determinar los problemas y oportunidades en el desempeño.

Por lo tanto, a pesar del trabajo invertido, Preziosi consideraba los cambios que se debían de realizar para mejorar la habilidad de avanzar en la competencia de motocicletas y diseñar motos más rápidas.

2. ANÁLISIS

La situación actual de la empresa se vio influenciada por el hecho de que a pesar de los cambios realizados en las diferentes motocicletas para 2004, no han logrado contar con la habilidad de avanzar en la ciencia de las competencias de motocicletas y el diseño de motos veloces como Ducati esperaba. El software de simulación que poseen para el diseño de las motocicletas no es el más óptimo o adecuado como el que usan para diseñar motores, pues necesitan acoplar los cambios en el diseño de motores respecto al diseño del vehículo.

Globalmente, más mujeres se convierten en clientes, siendo atraídas por productores de motocicletas y tienen gustos muy específicos de las mismas.
Tecnología: la innovación tecnológica de las motocicletas debería apoyarse con el uso de tecnologías CAD (diseño soportado por computadoras). Además, existen muchos proveedores que ofrecen componentes para la producción de motocicletas. Sin embargo, los productores japoneses también son líderes de firmas de motocicletas debido a sus excelentes técnicas.
Es importante mantener un equilibrio entre las características de la motocicleta con su desempeño y funcionalidad. El segmento deportivo en la industria necesita estrategias competitivas para todas las companies que estén en esta competencia intense.

3. DEFINICIÓN DEL PROBLEMA
El problema radica en determinar los cambios necesarios que Ducati debe realizar para mejorar su habilidad de avanzar en la ciencia de las carreras de motos y diseñar motos más veloces. La empresa necesita decidir si el equipo necesita adquirir más datos, computadoras o personal, o si debe de reducir o cambiar los recursos con los que cuenta. Es también crítico el análisis del sistema de información que poseen para la simulación en el desarrollo de nuevos modelos de motocicletas.
4. ALTERNATIVAS

Desarrollar la nueva moto GP5 adquiriendo un nuevo software que permita realizar simulaciones con los prototipos diseñados Podría ser una mejora que beneficie a todo el sistema de información de Ducati para el desarrollo de modelos, permitiendo hacer simulaciones y poder acercarse más a hacer ajustes más acertados y modelos más eficientes. Es difícil encontrar un software que sea lo más cercano o muy acorde a las necesidades de las empresas, por lo que el desarrollo de este software podría llevar tiempo de desarrollo e implementación. 5. DECISIÓN

El problema principal de Ducati es el corto tiempo con el que cuenta para realizar las pruebas necesarias de cada prototipo. Para poder realizar un mejor desarrollo de producto debe considerarse el uso de de herramientas de simulación que contribuyan a la evaluación de los prototipos que van surgiendo para poder hacer cambios simultáneos al desempeño de las motocicletas en cada competencia.
Tomando una estrategia de resolución de problemas “front-loading” podrán tener mejores resultados detectando a través de simulaciones problemas en etapas tempranas sin tener que invertir en el desarrollo de prototipos que no cumplen con las características de desempeño requeridas para competir. Así mismo el uso de la información histórica permitirá cometer menos errores en el diseño de nuevos prototipos y por lo tanto disminuir gastos que compensarán la inversión en el nuevo software.

6. MEDIDA DE IMPLEMENTACIÓN
Buscar un proveedor de Software que pueda desarrollar una forma de compartir de manera segura los datos recopilados del prototipo con el equipo de Investigación y Desarrollo y con los Proveedores:
Es importante contar con un software y un equipo de soporte de software que colabore tanto con el equipo de Investigación y Desarrollo interno así como con los proveedores externos de partes de motocicletas. De esta manera se podrá tener una mejor comprensión de los requerimientos para poder bajar al mínimo el tiempo de implementación de cambios en las motocicletas o el tiempo de desarrollo de las mismas. Los proveedores de esta manera, pueden trabajar en paralelo con los diseñadores de Ducati.
Crear un departamento de desarrollo de producto que se dedique a la administración del ciclo de vida del mismo y a la administración de la información por medio de tecnología de punta:
Para lograr producir motocicletas más complejas y desarrollarlas de manera más rápida, Ducati necesita acelerar el paso del desarrollo del producto. Esto permitirá a la compañía desarrollar un nuevo modelo de forma más rápida. Las motocicletas pueden tener varias unidades de control para la suspensión, transmisión, compresión y estabilidad. Todos estos sistemas interactúan y deben ser administrados de manera eficiente y confiable. Esto permitirá reducir el ciclo de desarrollo de una motocicleta. Esto puede ser posible únicamente por medio de un software hecho a la medida que integre todos los departamentos y operaciones: prototipos, producción, bodega, repuestos y accesorios. Al integrar todos estos procesos e ir trabajando en paralelo en cada uno de ellos, se pueden desarrollar accesorios al mismo tiempo que se va desarrollando la motocicleta.
