For Isabella and Calista Stone When you are eighty years old, and in a quiet moment of reflection narrating for only yourself the most personal version of your life story, the telling that will be most compact and meaningful will be the series of choices you have made. In the end, we are our choices. —Jeff Bezos, commencement speech at Princeton University, May 30, 2010 Prologue In the early 1970s, an industrious advertising executive named Julie Ray became fascinated with an unconventional public-school program for gifted children in Houston, Texas. Her son was among the first students enrolled in what would later be called the Vanguard program, which stoked creativity and independence in its students and nurtured expansive, outside-the-box thinking. Ray grew so enamored with the curriculum and the community of enthusiastic teachers and parents that she set out to research similar schools around the state with an eye toward writing a book about...

...Function/operational areas of ASF ASF in Pakistan specifically focuses on the following areas: * Horticulture i.e. fruits, vegetables, dry fruits, dates, spices. * Floriculture * Livestock (excluding poultry and fishery) & Dairy The function in the above areas because according to them these area are largely ignored even though they contribute significantly to Pakistan GDP. Horticulture Horticulture is considered to be the science, business and art of growing and marketing fruits, vegetables, flowers, and ornamental plants. It is unique among plant sciences because it not only involves science and technology, but it also incorporates art and design principles. The horticulture sector in Pakistan represents tremendous unrealized potential and what is needed is systematic and focused attention, for Pakistan to carve a niche for itself in this global market of $ 80 billion. Of Pakistan's 88.2 million hectares of land, approximately 20 million hectares are used for agricultural and horticultural purposes. Of that amount only 20 percent is considered to have the potential for intensive crop production. Presently Pakistan annually produces 13 million tons of fruit and vegetables valued at around $ 2 billion, and out of this only about half a million tons valued at $ 140 million, is exported. The factors inhibiting export growth include our inability to comply with quality and sanitary/phytosanitary standards and insufficient shelf life of our fresh fruits...

...color space is extracted, as green channel has better contrast when compared to the other channels .Then contrast-Limited Adaptive Histogram Equalization (CLAHE) algorithm was applied which consist of applying histogram equalization for each region in the image as a result of which local contrast is enhanced for each region. An Alternating Sequential Filtering (ASF) is applied to remove the noise in the image. In the first preprocessing step for Exudate detection, the original RGB retinal image is transformed to CIELab color space . CIELAB indicates the values with three axes: L*, a*, and b*where ’L’ defines lightness, ’ a ’ denotes the red/green value and ’b’ the yellow/blue value. As L is a value between 0 and 100, this color space is not easy to visualize. The CIElab color space allows the intensity to be treated separately from the other two components and is considered to be most appropriate for contrast enhancement.Relations for L*, a *, and b * are as follows[27]: Y Y L = 116 ( ); for( ) > 0:008856 (1) Yn Yn 903:3 ( Y ); Otherwise Yn a = 500 (f( X f(Y Yn)) (2) Xn X D. ...Journal of Cleaner Production 12 (2004) 1037–1045 www.elsevier.com/locate/jclepro On the industrial ecology potential in Asian Developing Countries Anthony S.F. Chiu a,Ã, Geng Yong b a b Graduate School of Business, De La Salle University, Tatt Avenue, Manila, Philippines Institute for Eco-planning and Development, Dalian University of Technology, Dalian, China Abstract This paper focuses on the current situation in the adaptation and adoption of industrial ecology in Asian Developing Countries (ADCs). The objective of this paper is to consider the possibilities to develop an eco-industrial development (EID) strategy for these developing countries. We review the regional indigenous resources of ADCs and use the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT) grouping to classify the preconditions of industrial ecology in ADCs. The authors of this paper argue that unlike the usual way of applying industrial ecology as a technical tool or a practical instrument, ADCs need to adopt industrial ecology as a strategic vision and as a strategic approach to plan the economic, social and ecological development of their national economies. In this way, it can be possible for the ADCs to avoid the same problems that occurred when the developed countries experienced industrialization and rapid economic growth, and move toward more sustainable development. # 2004 Published by Elsevier Ltd.
