Leadership Styles

...Leadership Styles paper Introduction Leadership is the process through which a person, in this case the leader, influences a group of people towards the realization of a common goal. The effectiveness of leadership depends on the style of leadership that the leader adopts, and usually depends on the context of leadership. This implies that different leadership styles are effective in different situations (Tittemore, 2003). Therefore, effective leaders are supposed to know the context through which a particular approach of leadership will be effective. In addition, the leadership approaches can be used for defining the personal leadership style that a person is likely to put into practice (Kippenberger, 2002). This paper discusses two leadership styles and identifies the most effective leadership that suits the philosophy of nursing leadership. In addition, the paper compares and contrasts leadership and management. The two main leadership styles discussed in this paper are autocratic and democratic leadership styles. Autocratic leadership style bases on the transactional theory, which lays more emphasis on the significance of the relationship that exists between the leader and the followers. The followers are supposed to obey the orders from their leaders (Marquis & Huston,...

Effective Approaches in Leadership and Management

...Effective Approaches in Leadership and Management The enactment of the affordable care act has significantly changed the structure of all health care. As the focus of treatment at health care facilities all across the country transitions from specialty care and acute illnesses to preventative and long term health management, many changes have taken effect that have directly affected the approach and delivery of care. One of the greatest changes is the vast amount of patients that are now seeking health care. In an attempt to keep up with these high demands, many facilities have been left scrambling to adjust their budgets, reduce excess spending, and implement more efficient means of care delivery. Nurses throughout this process have had to adapt to a work environment that is constantly being changed and restructured. As a result, decreased job satisfaction, increased incidence of compassion fatigue, and nurse to patient ratios involving higher acuity levels have all contributed to the vast nursing shortage that is being experienced today. In addition, patient satisfaction scores and Medicare reimbursement have been greatly affected as well. Despite all of the aforementioned issues, there are some facilities that are taking the extra step to recognize and promote nursing excellence by setting the standards higher in an attempt to gain Magnet status. Professional Development of Nursing Professionals

...Professional Development of Nursing Professionals Tabatha Olague Grand Canyon University: NRS-430V December 9, 2015 The 2010 Institute of Medicine (IOM) report has and will have an impact on nursing as a whole. It states that nurses have a crucial role regarding the quality and value of care. Nurses must sustain a significant transformation if the committee’s vision for healthcare will be accomplished (“The Future of Nursing”, 2010). It also states that the way nurses were taught and practiced during the 1990’s is no longer effective for the care necessary for the times we are in now (“The Future of Nursing”, 2010). There are many outdated beliefs, approaches, and tendencies that stop the introduction of new ideas that the nursing profession can do for healthcare (“The Future of Nursing”, 2010). The report states that there is a need to revolutionize education and nurses should acquire higher levels of education and training through a system that encouraged consistent academic advancement (“The Future of Nursing”, 2010). The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) believes that education has a great influence on the skills and knowledge of the nurse (“The Impact of Education”, 2015). The AACN also states that there are many demands placed on nurses today and that BSN prepared nurses are well prepared to meet these demands (“The Impact of Education”, 2015). An appropriate definition can help differentiate between these key terms; management can be defined as working with and through individuals and groups and other sources to accomplish organisational goals (Hersey and Blanchard, 1988) while leadership is an influence relationship among leaders and followers who intend real changes and outcomes that reflect their shared purpose (Rost and Barker, 2000); to further clarify the polemics about the difference between the terms, a look into another definition; according to Drucker (1999), management is a social discipline that deals with the behaviour of people and human institutions, while according to Jones and Jenkins (2006), leadership is a set of initiatives and responses between the people for the purpose of achieving mutual objectives intended to result in collective effectiveness and personal enrichment over time.
