In The Lord of the Flies a bunch of boys are stranded on an Island and try to survive. In order to survive you need to have someone to lead the group. In the book they had a hard time deciding who should be elected as leader. Ralph was elected but Jack thought he should’ve been. Ralph and Jack were two different people and lead differently than the other. So I questioned myself, what makes a leader effective?

What makes a leader effective in his/her group? Well an effective is hard to come by, but to me an effective leader must have these three important characteristics. They must be Courageous, if a leader isn’t brave enough to do the tasks that he asks others to do why does he deserve to tell you to do that task. Another thing a leader must be is respectful, I don't know about you but if someone doesn't respect you why do they deserve respect from you? If a leader doesn't respect their group members then why should they be respected as a leader? Last thing is trustworthy. If a group doesn't trust their leader then they shouldn't be leading, because if you don't trust somebody why would you do what they asked. When Ralph respected the group and showed them he could be trusted Simon trusted him and respected his wishes. So when Ralph started building a shelter and asked Simon to help he did. …show more content…
When they established that at assemblies whoever held the conch was the only one allowed to speak Ralph obeyed that rule. So if he obeys one rule you can trust him to obey the other rules that were set. Ralph also respected what people had to say, so people respected him and what he had to say. Also when Jack challenged Ralph’s courage he stepped up Jack asked him to come hunting trying to prove he wasn't courageous, but when they saw a wild boar Ralph stepped up to the plate and threw a spear that stuck right into the boars

Flord of the Flies Movie Review

...Lord of the Flies is a 1963 British film directed by Peter Brook based on the 1954 novel by William Golding. Both the book and movie of Lord of the Flies represent popular culture in the fact that the book started out being popularized by the working class and would later become a best seller and even move into the category of high culture by becoming required reading in many schools across the world as well as wining the Nobel Prize. The Lord of the Flies and book and movie demonstrate many of the traits that are often reproduced in various form media and often imitated in other works of film, television, and reading. Lord of the Flies was remade into another film in 1990 but the 1963 film is considered to be closer to the book and is the one that is used by this paper. The 1963 Lord of the Flies film is a black and white British film that is presented in the form of a third person narrative in which the audience is a outside party looking in on the cast of the film. The film is about a group of young pre-teen to teenage boys who crash land on an island somewhere is the specific ocean as a result of their plane being shoot down. In the background of the movie there is some type of war but the film never mentioned which war is taking place. With the film being based on a book from the 1950s and the film taking place in the 1960 it can be assumed that the war in question is either World War II or perhaps a future war. In the film the overall theme is that violence and hate...

Ralph Vs Jack In Lord Of The Flies Research Paper

...With all of the chaos erupting on the island in the book "Lord of the Flies' by William Golding, Jack tends to stir the pot between him and Ralph. Jack does many things to put Ralph in trouble and make him seem like a bad person. Ralph is a better leader than Jack in Lord Of The Flies. The first reason why Ralph is a better leader than Jack is because of his ability to stay calm when tensions between the group arise. On page 33, it is said by Ralph that "That's what this shell's called." I'll give the conch to the next person to speak to. He can hold it when he's speaking." And he won't be interrupted. Except by me. This shows that Ralph is prioritizing the peace between everyone and ensuring that when people want to speak, they can. This example of Ralph using the conch supports my claim because when the conch is allowed to be used by a certain person, this creates the person to be able to share what they are feeling without backlash or judgment in the moment, which internally and externally creates calmness within them, which makes people feel secure and safe with Ralph being the leader that he is....

Lord of the Flies

...Several characters in William Golding’s Lord of the Flies show leadership potential in the novel, but, because they had or lacked certain character traits, were no effective as leaders. Jack, a very significant character in the novel, shows leadership potential throughout the whole novel. Ralph, also another significant character in the novel shows leadership potential but not as much as he should be, considering he is the chief. Lastly, Simon a very dynamic character does not show leadership traits but does show certain character traits other characters do not. All these characters either show leadership characters traits or do not but they are all effective as leaders or not as leaders. Firstly Jack shows leadership character traits through his actions towards the group. Jack wants to become the chief of the island but Piggy does not think that’s a good idea. Jack then splits everyone up by who wants to kill and who does not. A quote from the novel says, “’And you shut up! Who are you, anyway? Sitting there – telling people what to do. You can’t hunt, you can sing –‘ ‘I’m chief. I got chosen.’ ‘Why should choosing make any difference? Just giving orders that don’t make any sense –‘” (Golding 98). Jack knows that he should be chief no matter who wants him to be or not. He just wants his way and his way only. Jack made all the other characters act like monsters. The quote states, “At once the crowd surged after it, poured down the rock, leapt onto the beast, screamed, struck...

Discuss How Effectively the Authors Use Setting and Location in the Novels Lord of the Flies and I'M the King of the Castle

...In both Lord of the Flies by William Golding and I’m the King of the Castle by Susan Hill, the authors have effectively used settings and locations in their novels. This is a great impact, as most of the settings and locations have a meaning, representing something to do with the plot. The writers have used certain locations in a way that affects the understanding and thoughts of the reader, ranging from calm, peaceful settings, to terrifyingly dark ones. Each novel has different high and lows to their story, and locations are effectively used to express this. In Lord of the Flies, the Island is the main location, and this is used as a symbol of isolation. The Island is in the middle of the sea, and the location is unknown. The boys are separated from the outside, and are isolated from society and rules, leading to no order. William Golding is trying to create a claustrophobic fear in the readers, one of the main emotional states shown in the book while the boys are on the island. The Island is the opening location of the novel, which is deliberately violent, as this is the setting of “the scar.” This instantly portrays the negative effect the boys will have on the environment of the Island. The influence this has by being at the very start of the book on the reader’s interpretation is that it will give a feel to the reader about how the plot will twist throughout the book. In I’m the King of the Castle the main location is Warings. Warings is a ‘gloomy,’ ‘entirely graceless’...

Qualities Of A Chief In Lord Of The Flies

...German-American journalist John Peter Zengar once said “Great leaders are not defined by the absence of weakness, but rather by the presence of clear strengths.”, meaning that the qualities and traits of a person determine their worth as a leader. When applying this principle to Lord of the Flies, it becomes obvious who the best chief on the island would be. A proper chief in that situation would need to exhibit many remarkable qualities. The chief on the island must take initiative, be diplomatic, and put the interests of the group first. Based on this information, Ralph is the one who is best fit to be chief. Being able to take initiative is an important quality for a leader. They must be able to get work started and keep it going. This...

Personal Narrative: Life After College

...There are a number of attributes, which I could improve. By minimizing or annulling these flaws, my relationship with other people will improve and consequently so will my ability to lead. Effective leading requires a comfortable relationship between the leader and those who are led. The biggest characteristic I have which hinders my ability to effectively lead is that I can be bossy and a perfectionist. When I was younger and at a friend's birthday party one mom described the children’s interaction as like “Lord of the Flies” and I embodied Jack. Minus the barbaric intent I would boss the other kids around stubbornly without accepting others opinions. This is due to the fact that I am task oriented than people oriented. I envision an outcome and expect it to be errorless. A bossy person can be detrimental in-group dynamics. Bossing people around ensures my ideas and process are carried out, nevertheless tensions can run high amongst group members and frustration becomes prevalent. I have been conscious of this tendency, but still I have not taken action to improve. Knowing that change is inherent...

What Does The Beast Symbolize In Lord Of The Flies

...Chapter 9: “A View to a Death” ***Pick 2 to answer 1. What are the purpose and effect of Jack’s generosity with the meat he and the hunters obtained? What do you think his decision to give meat to even Ralph and Piggy is meant to show? 2. Why does Jack command the boys to dance and chant, and why is this an effective leadership tactic? What psychological effect does dancing and chanting have on the boys? Think back to the effect that putting on makeup had on them in Chapter 4. Jack commands the boys and chants to display his leadership. In addition he does this because he saw the “beast” and were luring to kill him. This is also shows the savagery because they aren’t thinking straight and are being savages. Their dance is very wierd or creepy because according to the text, “ The hunters took their spears, the cooks took spits, and the rest clubs of firewood” (151) shows what the hunters do, who are kids. The psychological effect is the kids obeying Jack to do a dance; stealing the freedom of the kids. 3. What is the “beast” that the boys kill? How is this event ironic and especially tragic (not only for the “beast,” but for everyone on the island)? How is it symbolically significant? The “beast” that they killed was Simon. This was tragic to the whole island because they killed one of their peers. It’s tragic because they...

Richard Branson Leadership

...[pic] [pic] [pic] [pic] INTRODUCTION Leadership is defined as the process of influencing an organized group towards accomplishing its goals.[1] We have learned that the leader is not exclusive in the leadership process. Researchers Fred Fiedler and Hollander recognized this and introduced the importance of the follower and the situation in the leadership process. Richard Branson is considered one of the most unorthodox business men of the 21st century. At the helm at the mega firm Virgin Group Ltd, Branson has defied conventional management and leadership wisdom. Through all his accomplishments, Branson’s amazing leadership skills cannot be mentioned in a vacuum. There is an interactional relationship between a leader, his or her followers and the situations in which they interact. This paper will analyze Branson as a leader. However, because his leadership success is not mutually exclusive, his followers and the important situations that define his career will be addressed. AN OVERVIEW OF BRANSON AND THE VIRGIN GROUP Biography Richard Charles Nicholas Branson is the son of a lawyer named Edward Branson and an airline stewardess named Eve Huntley-Flindt; born on July 18, 1950 in Surrey, England.
