RESEARCH PLAN
Rationale
The population of the country increases as time goes by. With this, environmental and economic problems are encountered by the people. Since some of the parts of the plants that are consumed are not being used, it will just add to the waste in the environment.
Cloth is one of the basic needs we need in order to live. It is usually made from animal skins, fibrous plants and polyesters. Fabrics for cloth are mostly made from cotton. But nowadays, cottons are starting to be limited in the Philippines (personal communication, Maranga, 2015). On the other hand, Betel nut trees are abundant in our country since it is commonly found in tropical countries. The Betel nut itself has many uses. They are usually chewed with betel leaf for their effects as a mild stimulant, causing a warming sensation in the body and slightly heightened alertness, although the effects vary from person to person. The researchers thought of using the betel nut husks as source of fabrics for cloth since only the nuts and leaf are used for chewing; in which Filipinos call it mamâ. With this, the husk will also be significant, not just its nuts and leaf. Also, the betel nut husk is fibrous, wherein it is one of the criteria in making fabrics for cloth thus making the cloth more durable. This will also be the future of our indigenous textile weaving industry, instead of synthetic threads. Not only the Musa textilis (abaca) is to be used in making fabrics for cloth but Betel nut husks can also serve as an alternative source.
The Betel nut itself has many uses. Betel nuts are usually chewed with betel leaf for their effects as a mild stimulant, causing a warming sensation in the body and slightly heightened alertness, although the effects vary from person to person. The chewing of betel nut quids dates to antiquity. Arecoline is responsible for some of the effects of betel quid chewing, such as alertness, increased stamina, a sense of well-being, euphoria, and salivation. Chewing the nut stimulates the flow of saliva to aid digestion. Betel nut also has been used to stimulate the appetite (Wolters Kluwer Health, 2009).
The production of cloth can help the society especially the people whose jobs are weaving. Cloth is often used as garments, dustrag, malong, and etc.
Hypotheses
a. The commercialized cloth will be the best setup among the others in terms of absorbency, seam breaking strength, and texture (rough or soft).
b. The cloth made out of Betel nut husks has no significant difference from the commercialized cloth. Research Question
The main objective of this study is to utilize Betel nut husks as source of fabrics for making cloth. Specifically, this study aimed to answer the following:
a. Which setup will be the best in terms of absorbency, seam-breaking strength and texture (rough or soft)?
a. Set-up A with 100% Betel nut husk
b. Set-up B which is the commercialized cloth
b. Is there a significant difference between the two set-ups in terms of the: a. absorbency? b. seam-breaking strength? c. texture (rough or soft)?
Research Methods and Conclusion
This research used Completely Randomized Design (CRD) wherein all of its extraneous variables were kept constant which are the tests used, type of Betel nut, amount of betel nut husks, and size of the fabrics. The researchers used the principles of replication and randomization in which there were two treatments (A, and B), three replicates (R1, R2 and R3) and three samples per replicate (S1 to S18). There were 18 samples all in all. For randomization, draw lots method was used to randomize the samples for each replicate in each treatment. Nine kilograms of Betel nut husks were collected. All the materials for the experimentation were prepared for each treatment. The Betel nut husks were then washed with tap water and soaked in boiling hot water for 10 minutes to remove the substance that may cause the husks to decay. Then, the boiled Betel husks were set aside at room temperature for 10 minutes to cool it off. After cooling the betel nut husks, it was then shredded using bare hands into fibres, dried under the heat of the sun for 2 days and weighed into 300 grams each sample using a weighing scale. After the drying of the Betel nut husks, it was then sent to the Philippine Textile Research Institute (PTRI) for the processing of Betel nut husks into cloth and for the laboratory testing for the seam breaking strength of the three samples through LBC. After the laboratory test for seam breaking strength of the three textile samples, the results were then sent back including the other six product or the cloth samples for the texture and absorbency tests of the samples. For the absorbency test, the three samples were separately placed on top of three beakers. Using rubbers bands, the samples where secured for it not to fall inside the beaker. 100 ml water was dropped in each beaker using the burette (covered with the textile) with 1 cm distance from the surface. The time for the dropped water to completely drop into the beaker was recorded. For the texture test, the texture of the samples were tested by being touched and felt by 5 blindfolded individuals and were asked of the texture of the textile whether it is rough or soft. Afterwards, the average responses of the 5 individuals were analyzed and the results were listed. The same procedure was done for the absorbency and texture test of the abaca textile samples. All the results and data gathered were analyzed and compared to the commercialized cloth based from the absorbency, seam-breaking strength, and texture (rough or soft) of the two. Since all the materials that will be used are biodegradable materials only, it will be deposited in the compose pit.

...text-messaging during the funeral of one of my high school students. Then, our school had its first play in three years. Throughout the audience, parents' faces were aglow as they text-messaged throughout their children's performances. Mostly, I was a bear about electronic devices in class. Even during the worst of our school's gang-related violence, my students kept their cell phones out of sight and usually out of mind. Periodically, though, we would be working and I would see several students start to sneak a peak at their phones. Then we would hear shouting in classrooms and the halls and there would be a stampede of students, including mine, to a fight. I also saw the same thing in the gym. I would be playing ball with my students during my planning period and, all of a sudden, students from across the school and adults from the neighborhood would rush towards a brawl. Had our school been able to prevent abuses of the new technology, I believe, another of my former students would be alive today. On the other hand, when students needed to take a call during class, they knew I would not question their word. If a student asked to step outside to answer their phone, my response was "of course." If a kid made simple eye contact and pointed to a phone, I would just nod, and the student would handle business and then return to work. One year, I had such a small class load that the same policy was extended to electronic music. The students knew each other, they knew that a few of their friends...
