Benefits, strengths, and challenges of diversity in collaborative environments.

A. Prepare a report for the head of your organization in which you do the following:
A1. Explain how three demographic changes in the United States are reflected within the organization. The video, Demographic Transformation of the U.S., which is linked in the Diversity and Culture Today section, and chapter 1 of the text will provide you with a snapshot of cultural demographics in the U.S. When you discuss the demographic changes, you will focus on the employees and volunteers of the organization and not the individuals served by the organization. For example, if you choose a school, you will not focus on students but the adults who work or volunteer within the school. A1a. Describe two ways in which increasing diversity could strengthen the organization. Diversity Consciousness and success are outlined in
Chapter 2 of the text. Make sure that you look at how diversity benefits the organization, beginning on page 63. Be specific to your organization. It’s important that you describe how having individuals from different backgrounds can make the organization better. B. Analyze the current communication practices within the organization by doing the following: B1. Describe two specific communication practices within the organization that could be improved. The section on intercultural communication in chapter 5 should help you think critically about how communication is impacted by culture. How does management communicate with employees/staff? Is communication within the organization collegial and respectful?Do individuals feel that their input is valued and thoughtfully received by others? Is stereotypical, derogatory language part of the organizational culture? Are communication styles, shaped by gender or culture, leading to problems with collaboration and organizational success?
Explain. Does the medium of communication lead to problems? B2. Explain two stereotypical assumptions that could limit effective communication between members of the organization. Be sure to read
Barriers to Effective Communication and think about “hot buttons” as you work on this section of the report. How do members of the organization stereotype one another due to their differences? How does these stereotypical assumptions negatively impact communication? How are dialect speakers or individuals who are non-native English speakers perceived? What about racial or religious minorities, women, the disabled, etc?
B3. Explain two potential barriers within the organization that must be overcome in order to improve communication. In this section of the report, you may reflect on how cultural biases, lack of awareness of cultural differences, ethnocentrism, etc. negatively impact communication.
Reviewing this information is a way to begin thinking about the barriers that may surface in your organization. Make sure that you specifically address your organization. Be careful not to just “plug” in terms from the e-text without specifically explaining how it relates to your organization. Review chapter 5 for more information on potential barriers. A list of barriers that affect communication begins on page 173. It is also a good idea to look back over barriers to success in chapter 3 and review concepts such as stereotypes, selective perceptions, prejudice, etc.

C. Propose a plan for improving the issues identified in part B. by doing the following:
C1. Describe three diversity skills that can help the organization overcome communication barriers. See p. 120, Chapter 4 for a list of diversity skills discussed throughout the course. C2. Explain how members of the organization will develop the three diversity skills from part C1. In this part of the task, you are formulating a plan to help members of the organization learn the three diversity skills that you identified. For example, if I want the members to learn how to adapt to new situations then I need to come up with a way that they can develop and practice the diversity skill of adaptability. I might suggest that we begin by reading a resource that outlines the benefits of adaptability for organizations and discuss ways that we all can have more positive reactions to change. To practice this skill, we will shuffle our committee assignments, so that we each learn to work with new people and practice responding in creative ways to new problems. See chapter 6, diversity ideas and teaming and culturally responsive practices in various settings for useful ideas on implementation of diversity skills. Chapter 7 outlines the role of diversity-conscious leadership. C3. Explain the benefits of implementing the recommendations from part C1. Be specific about how your recommendations will improve the communication and success of your organization. Think about all the benefits of diversity skills. Include a practical explanation of how implementation of your recommendations will make the workplace better.
Provide at least one specific benefit to the organization for each diversity skill. To continue with the example of adaptability, one of the diversity skills I identified, I might explain that the benefit of adaptability to the organization is that change does not serve as stumbling block. The members of the organization are able to adapt to setbacks and challenges and continue moving forward. For example, when the number of immigrants requiring literacy instruction doubled, the NALC was able to come up with an innovative and successful plan for recruiting more tutors, which lead to even greater success for our students. D. When you use sources, include all in-text citations and references in APA format.
