“Advantages and disadvantages of using electric cars as a major type of transportation in Hong Kong”

In the past few years, there were a lot of discussions in Hong Kong about using electric cars as a primary type of transportation in this Asia’s World City. While it is commonly believed that electric vehicles (EV) have a number of positive sides, some scholars claim that there are still major disadvantages of using EV comparing to conventional cars (CV). In this essay, arguments from both sides are examined and my own opinion is provided.

There are numbers of researchers who advocate that the use of EV can decrease the negative impact of vehicles on the environment. According to research conducted by Elgowainy et al. (2009), EV produce almost two times less greenhouse gases (CO2) than the CV. Greenhouse gases are responsible for serious global warming problem (Carayannis, 2011). Therefore, using EV as a substitution of CV can help to solve the alarming global warming issue. In addition to decreasing greenhouse gases, another benefits of using EV is that it may enhance the quality of the air in the area. According to Mike Salisbury (2014), EV experience much more reduction in producing emission level of nitrogen oxides (NOX), a subject of air pollutant (Bell et al., 2012)., comparing to gasoline-fueled vehicles. Therefore, implementing more EV can help to address the air quality problem of Hong Kong. This might provide public health benefits to Hong Kong people. Adopting more EV in Hong Kong will give the worldwide contribution to solving such problems as global warming and air pollution.

Additionally to reduction of the car impact on the environment, another major point of using EV is that it can save money for the people who buy them. Even though the prices for EV cars are usually higher than for their competitors, in the long-term it gives monetary benefits for the owners. The total fuel cost for using EV is 3 times less than for using CV (Anair & Mahmassani, 2012). Moreover, there is a great amount of technologies coming every year in the sphere of electric cars, therefore the prices for EV cars will only decrease in the future (Salisbury, 2014). In addition to the fuel savings, in a lot of countries around the world there are tax reliefs for owners of the EV. For instance, in Hong Kong people who buy EV do not have to pay registration taxes (Shay, 2011). Therefore, one can come to the conclusion that buying electric car can help to maintain better the financial situation.

However, despite being more environmentally-friendly and expenditure-saving, some people consider using electric cars is not appropriate due to some of its disadvantages. One of them is the well-known fact that EV produce almost no sound on the road as they use electric engines. According to Sangberg (2012, p.212), “all-electric automobiles are so quiet at low speed in electric drive that they constitute a safety hazard for pedestrians and bicyclists”. Therefore, it might be dangeroues for people in Hong Kong due to many narrow places where people tend to cross the street without looking on the road. In addition to the streets, it is a known fact that there are lots of parks in Hong Kong. There is quite atmosphere in such places and if there is a conventional car, it can be easily identified due to its sound. However, if electric car goes nearby, people do not pay attention and negative consequences may arise.

The danger of the quiet sound is not the only problem of EV. Another is that EV users in Hong Kong might feel the lack of fast charging stations. According to the Environmental Protection Department of Hong Kong (2014), there are only 12 fast charging stations in the city. Therefore, people spend a lot of time not only charging their EV cars in usual stations, also it takes time to stay in a queue for fast charge. As a result, EV are said to be time-consuming in terms of charging.

It is clear that there are both pros and cons of using EV as a major type of transportation in Hong Kong. The idea of using electricity as a fuel might help to solve such issue as global warming as well as decreases the amount of pollutants in the air. Also, government encouragements and low prices for the EV fuel can save money for the EV owners. However, contemporary technologies and the adaption of them can not allow us to use EV for the whole potential. By this I mean that quiet sound of the car and the small amount of quick chargers cause several problems including time-consumption. However, since every year more and more people are engaged into being a social responsible citizen, the demand for EV as well as for electric technologies will be increasing.

Taking all these factors into consideration, my conclusion is that the implementation of EV to be the main type of transportation in Hong Kong is not yet comfortable and convenient. However, I believe that such idea will be more than acceptable in the future. By this I mean that with the development of technologies, the majority of the main disadvantages of EV as described above are likely to be solved.

...local government policies that may affect your own business, which include law, tax, and guidelines. Firstly, taxation is the factor that can directly affect the price of the vehicles. ...Topic 1 The Scope of Economic Analysis Question 1.1 “According to the definition of opportunity cost, the more alternatives that we have given up in undertaking an action, the higher the opportunity cost.” Please comment on this statement and explain your answers using examples. Ans Opportunity cost of an action refers to the value of the best alternative that must be given up in order to undertake that action. That is, the highest-valued option forgone. The statement in the question is uncertain and is determined by situation, because the opportunity cost is the value of the best alternative forgone rather than the sum of all the alternatives forgone. There are two possibilities. Firstly, if the value of one added option is higher than that of original best alternative forgone, the opportunity cost increase. By contrast, if each of the added options’ values is no more than that of original best alternative forgone, the opportunity cost remains constant. Example for the situation that the value of one added option is higher than that of original best alternative forgone: Suppose that you have $5,000 dollars at hand and you are considering spending this money on (Listed in the priority of the action’s value for you) |Original buying list |Value |Added alternatives |value | |1. Compare and Contrast Hk and the Usa

...The United States V.S. Hong Kong              When you travel to another country, you can definitely realize there are lots of conspicuous differences between the country and yours. I have been studying in the States for some time. At the outset, I found it hard to adapt to the new environment since there are significant differences between the States and the place where I was brought up—Hong Kong, especially in several major areas of food culture, environment, and lifestyle.              One big difference between the States and Hong Kong is food culture. “Pizzas, burgers and French Fries are our regular meals!” one American student told me. I do agree with her, for I have seen pizzas, burgers and French fries appear in the school cafeteria every day since I arrived. Moreover, McDonald’s, Burger King and Papa Gino’s, which sell fast food, dominate in the States. If you stay in the States for a while, you’ll definitely familiarize yourself with various types of pizzas and burgers: Pepperoni Pizza—pizza dough topped with tomato sauce mixture, cheese and pepperoni; Hawaiian Pizza—combines sweet with sour; Double Cheese Burger—consists of beef patties, melted cheese and mustard. However, for the Chinese, steamed rice, cooked or fried vegetables and fish are main meals in Hong Kong. Apart from that, food in the United States only satisfies hunger. In contrast, food in Hong Kong “is also an expression of cultural identity and the choice or rejection of certain types of food, the...

How China Reshape It Car Design

...Reshaping Car Design Across World For global automakers, China is becoming the new California. The U.S. state grabbed the lead a few years ago in establishing fuel-efficiency standards to clean up urban smog. Now, as China struggles with its air-pollution crisis, Beijing increasingly influences the models and technology Detroit, Europe and Japan sell around the world. In response to government rules and incentives that have spurred electric-car sales in China, automakers are beefing up their global electric-vehicle and plug-in offerings. General Motors Co. plans to make a plug-in hybrid version of every Cadillac model. Ford Motor Co. has budgeted $4.5 billion to develop 13 new EVs and plug-in hybrids by 2020, and China is a big reason for both automakers. Daimler AG’s Mercedes-Benz is selling five plug-ins in China, two of which also sell in the U.S. Similarly, BMW AG is engineering plug-in hybrids it sells worldwide to meet China’s electric-drive mandates. “Originally we started with California rules, so the starting point for us was clearly the U.S.,” said Klaus Froehlich, BMW’s global head of product development. “Now, China is a key market. It is very important and the regulations are quite difficult.” Decisions made in Beijing already are affecting cars people drive in Dallas and Los Angeles. That’s because automakers tend to design new models to sell in multiple regions -- and China is the world’s largest auto market. GM engineered its new Chevrolet Bolt electric car for global...

November 21, 2011 Rio Consulting Group Michael Dawes James Hadel Daniel Ma Simon Qin International Expansion Report | Tesla Motors, Incorporated | Rio Consulting Group Executive Summary Founded in 2003, Tesla strives to design, develop, manufacture and sell high-performance fully electric vehicles and advanced electric vehicle powertrain components. Currently, Tesla’s presence internationally is limited to dealerships in Europe and a minor production plant in Britain. In order to be best positioned moving forward, we recommend expanding into Latin America and Asia Pacific to better fulfill CEO Elon Musk’s primary goal to commercialize electric vehicles all the way to mass market. As we predict slow growth for the standard auto industry, we believe the electric vehicle industry is extremely attractive for several reasons, including high oil prices, less greenhouse gas emissions and government incentives. Our best estimates suggest the electric vehicle industry will have average growth rates of 35 – 40% over the next 10 years. International expansion, if done correctly, can help improve upon Tesla’s current strategic position in order to become the global leader in electric vehicles. We have determined that the optimal points of entry for the market are in Brazil and Singapore. In addition to gained access to the two fastest growing regions in the segment, the two locations are attractive for many political, economic, financial, cost, and market reasons. In Brazil...

...7CASE 6-1 FACEBOOK OVERVIEW Three years ago 1-800-Flowers, long a pioneer in Internet marketing, became the first national florist to create a fan page on Facebook. It used the free page to build relationships with customers and sell selected products, but it spent very little money advertising on the site. In January, however, the company began buying a different kind of Facebook advertisement. “Sponsored stories,” as they’re called, let marketers pay to turn actions people take on Facebook into promotional content. When members click a thumbs-up button to signal that they “like” a product or brand, for example, a simple ad appears on their friends’ pages: “Julia Smith likes 1-800- HYPERLINK "http://www.Flowers.com" Flowers.com .” Those friends can click a Like button on that ad, which then shows up on their friends’ pages, and so on. Thanks in part to those ads, the company now has more than 125,000 Facebook fans, more than twice as many as it had at the start of the year. Now, says 1-800-Flowers president Chris McCann, “We look at Facebook as core to our marketing program.” So do dozens of other major brands, including Ford, Procter & Gamble, Starbucks, and Coca-Cola. Suddenly, large companies are running multimillion dollar ad campaigns on Facebook. Startups, such as the social-game maker Zynga and the daily-deal service Groupon, are mounting similar though smaller campaigns, and so are hundreds of thousands of local businesses, such as fitness salons...
