...Isaac Walker Walker1 Mrs. Toth English 2 Honors Period 6 26 February 2016 Research Paper Imagine a world without animals... Eating would change and life in general would change. One may think that this is not possible, but it is. If poaching rates continue this could be a scary true future. Poaching is a deadly crime against wildlife. Wildlife officials say that legal hunters kill tens of millions of animals every year. For each of those animals, another is killed illegally, perhaps on closed land or out of season, leaving orphaned young to starve. Few poachers are caught or punished. This according to humanesociety.org. Studies have shown an increase in poaching in the recent years which is attributed to the value of the animals...

...Research Essay Federal Lands in Idaho Should be Managed by Idaho This year the federal government spent a billion dollars fighting wild fires. The Prepare Act, currently under consideration in Congress, would give funds to local governments for wild fire mitigation. FEMA would provide oversight for any funds directed to the states as the recent fire season was considered a disaster. Prepare, Ready, Equip, and Prevent Areas at Risk of Emergency Wildfires Act of 2013 or the PREPARE Act of 2013, was authored in part by Idaho’s own Senator Crapo and Senator Michael Bennet of Colorado (The Library of Congress, S.1428, .IS, 2013-2014). The federal government is aware that our forests have been mismanaged and this act, in a small way, helps to make up for previous management practices. It does not do enough to mitigate the effects of pests and wildfires that endanger our forests in Idaho. Some of you may know a little about the ownership of federal lands in Idaho. This paper will help you to learn more about this. Some of you may know a lot about ownership of federal lands in Idaho. Perhaps you know someone personally who has dealt with land issues in Idaho. Hopefully, you will learn something new about this topic that persuade you that the State of Idaho needs to assume ownership and oversight of these public lands. I was employed by the timber industry for several years and spent time lobbying on their behalf to keep public lands open for logging. I have researched...

...wolves should be shot on site. How could you argue with the people most directly affected by the re-introduction of wolves into their area? When your livelihood is constantly threatened by the predators, it drives people to extremes. In our initial settling of this country we drove the other predators (mainly Native American and wolves) from their lands; forcing them to remote outskirts. We nearly killed the wolf off in our drive to seize this vast territory and everything in it. By doing that we threw off nature’s food chain, which caused a ripple effect among other animals and plants directly affected by the wolf. By re-introducing the wolf to its once natural territory, are we trying to right an injustice done by our ancestors long ago? Research has shown that wolves impact society through its reputation as killer of livestock, important link in the eco-system, and pawn in the ongoing debates between Government and Conservationist groups. There’s something spiritual about gazing into a wolf’s eyes. It touches your soul and it changes you. According to Lopez (1978) “It takes your stare and turns it back on you. People suddenly want to explain the feelings that come over them when confronted with that stare-their fear, their hatred, their respect, their curiosity” (p4).You cannot deny the power and strength that lies in that stare, although we share different physical forms, we can still aspire to the virtues of Wolves: Innocent victim or vicious killer? 3...

I examined human-leopard conflicts in and near Ayubia National Park, Pakistan, to provide management recommendations for the conservation of leopards. Persecution of leopards by humans has been on the rise primarily due to depredation on livestock and risk to human lives. Since 1989, 16 humans have either been killed or injured in and around Ayubia National Park while leopards faced 44 human-caused mortalities during the same period. I examined the management strategy adopted by NWFP Wildlife Department for leopard conservation, identify gaps, and suggest possible management...

...Flextronics: Deciding on a Shop-Floor System for Producing the Microsoft Xbox It was March 2001 and Jim McCusker was getting restless during the long flight over to Hungary. He had just spent a few days visiting Flextronics’ North American operations in Guadalajara, Mexico, and now he was on his way to Flextronics’ central European facilities. He was planning to spend two days there before heading back to his primary office at Flextronics’ U.S. headquarters in San Jose, California. As the senior account manager for Flextronics’ relationship with Microsoft, McCusker spent much of his time traveling between the two facilities, one in Mexico and one in Hungary, that would be producing the new Xbox video game system for the 2001 holiday season. When McCusker first took charge of the Microsoft account in November 2000, he quickly realized that Flextronics had committed to an extremely aggressive schedule for producing the Xbox. The two facilities designated to build the product would have to work together very closely to achieve Microsoft’s goal of a simultaneous North American and European launch. The Microsoft Xbox was Flextronics’ first truly global project, and McCusker knew that it would be important to standardize certain elements among the Flextronics facilities. In fact, in bidding for the business, Flextronics management had committed to Microsoft that they would use the same shop-floor management system in both facilities so that Microsoft could track all the...

...Guns, Germs and Steel Page 1 GUNS, GERMS, AND STEEL: The Fates of Human Societies By Jared Diamond, 1997 About the Author: Jared Diamond is a professor of physiology at UCLA School of Medicine. He is a recipient of a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship and was awarded a 1999 National Medal of Science. He is also the author of The Third Chimpanzee. SUMMARY The book asks and attempts to answer the question, once humankind spread throughout the world, why did different populations in different locations have such different histories? The modern world has been shaped by conquest, epidemics, and genocide, the ingredients of which arose first in Eurasia. The book’s premise is that those ingredients required the development of agriculture. Agriculture also arose first in Eurasia, not because Eurasians were superior in any way to people of other continents, but because of a unique combination of naturally occurring advantages, including more and more suitable wild crops and animals to domesticate, a larger land mass with fewer barriers to the spread of people, crops, and technology, and an east-west axis which meant that climate was similar across the region. The book is well written and contains not only information about the history of cultures around the world, but excellent descriptions of the scientific methodologies used to study them, from how archeologists study the origin of agriculture to how writing evolved to how linguistics can trace the movements of peoples across huge geographic...

...Please Don’t Eat the Daisies, admits that she often finds herself in the kitchen reading soup-can labels—or anything—in order to prolong the moments before taking pen in hand. John C. Calhoun, vice president under Andrew Jackson, insisted he had to plow his fields before he could write, and Joseph Conrad, author of Lord Jim and other novels, is said to have cried on occasion from the sheer dread of sitting down to compose his stories. To spare you as much hand-wringing as possible, this chapter presents some practical suggestions on how to begin writing your short essay. Although all writers must find the methods that work best for them, you may find some of the following ideas helpful. But no matter how you actually begin putting words on paper, it is absolutely essential to maintain two basic ideas concerning your writing task. Before you write a single sentence, you should always remind yourself that 1. You have some valuable ideas to tell your reader, and 2. More than anything, you want to communicate those ideas to your reader. These reminders may seem obvious to you, but without a solid commitment to your own opinions as well as to your reader, your prose will be lifeless and boring. If you don’t care about your subject, you can’t very well expect anyone else to. Have confidence that your ideas are worthwhile and that your reader genuinely...

Type the abstract of the document here. The abstract is typically a short summary of the contents of the document.] 2012 Nishant Aishwarya Roll Number - 26 Introduction Wildlife includes all non-domesticated plants, animals and other organisms. Domesticating wild plant and animal species for human benefit has occurred many times all over the planet, and has a major impact on the environment, both positive and negative. Wildlife can be found in all ecosystems. Deserts, forests, rain forests, plains, grasslands, and other areas including the most developed urban sites, all have distinct forms of wildlife. While the term in popular culture usually refers to animals that are untouched by human factors, most scientists agree that wildlife around the world is impacted by human activities. Humans have historically tended to separate civilization from wildlife in a number of ways including the legal, social, and moral sense. This has been a reason for debate throughout recorded history. Religions have often declared certain animals to be sacred, and in modern times concern for the natural environment has provoked activists to protest the exploitation of wildlife for human benefit or entertainment. Literature has also made use of the traditional human separation from wildlife. Foods, Pets, Traditional Medicine:...
