...Dashes There are many uses of the en and em dash and also many ways to form these dashes using your computer. The following explanations offer the most common uses and methods for forming these dashes. En Dash An en dash, roughly the width of an n, is a little longer than a hyphen. It is used for periods of time when you might otherwise use to. Examples: The years 2001–2003 January–June An en dash is also used in place of a hyphen when combining open compounds. Examples: North Carolina–Virginia border a high school–college conference Most authorities recommend using no spaces before or after en or em dashes. To form an en dash with most PCs, type the first number or word, then hold down the ALT key while typing 0150 on the numerical pad on the right side of your keyboard. Then type the second number or word. An em-dash is typically used to act as a comma or parenthesis to separate out phrases—or even just a word—in a sentence for various reasons (i.e. an appositive). Examples where an em-dash should be used: School is based on the three R’s—reading, writing, and ’rithemtic. Against all odds, Pete—the unluckiest man alive—won the lottery. I sense something; a presence I've not felt since— An en-dash is used to connect values in a range or that are related. A good rule is to use it when you're expressing a "to" relationship. Examples where an en-dash should be used: in years 1939–1945 pages 31–32 may be relevant New York...

...that there were actually more cons than pros. * * As mentioned in the report LIBOR has been the catalyst for fraud and unfair play in the past years. This being said I cannot see this reform in LIBOR go the right way for either party. The FED might have already lost the trust of many people around the world with the scandals of late that have taken place. Many people were hurt when they took out loans and LIBOR was artificially high. However, when LIBOR was artificially low people paid less than they should have. This is a small example on the controversy of whether or not LIBOR should be reformed or completely thrown out the window. * * LIBOR is a very important index, which serves as a benchmark for derivatives. Being the most widely used interested rate in the world, it is not easy to just throw it out the window, as many people who were on the brunt of the scandal would wish. * * I believe that LIBOR is not as risk-free as we think it is. I believe that the scandals that were taken place proved that. Many people lost their savings and not only were the savings lost, but the banks that were the cause of the scandal were stealing it. This, I believe speaks for itself to answer the question if LIBOR is as risk-free as we think it is. I believe we were led to believe that is was a fixed fair rate, however we have seen that it can be manipulated and artificially fixed in ways in which we can lose our money. This is a big reason why I believe...

...scandalous and creates wide seethe and uproar from the public who are the ultimate victims of these scandals. For many reformers and speakers it may take ages to bring a matter of public concern in front of people, which when scandalized became notoriously famous without any help. For example wiki leaks had generated mass curiosity around the world about the facts and events which were otherwise completely obscure and esoteric to general public. With increased freedom of the forth estate everything is out in the open ,all political scandals ,social scandals and even financial scandals are watched ,scrutinized and are brought to justice. In the 21st centaury where social networking has dissolved all the known physical boundaries, a scandal of one country is a popular talk of another continent, people discuss ,debate and provide solution to the problem which arose because of the so called scandal, which we can never imagine happening half a century ago. The Bernie Madoffs in famous embezzlement scandal has created waves of dissatisfaction among the masses, and demanded higher level of probe and investigation in the matter. The Italian prime minister’s sex scandal has stumped the world and raised questions about the moral conduct about the leader. No reformer or speakers could have generated such wide spread awareness about a issue or a problem within the society .Thus scandals play a major roles in generating general awareness and finding root cause for a problem ,which...

...Mr. May APLAC December 16 2012 Jack Abramoff Corruption in governments inspires frantic media coverage and people to lose faith in politics. The United States has a long history of these scandals that has initiated some concern about the way the government is run. Jack Abramoff, a once powerful lobbyist, was recently involved in one of the largest scandals in Washington. Abramoff rose from, generally, nothing to becoming America’s most notorious lobbyist. When scandal ultimately cast him down, Abramoff was sentenced to four years in federal prison for fraud, tax evasion, and conspiracy. While serving his term in jail, he had received vile and harsh insults that depicted him as “scum” and “evil.” Now released from the penitentiary, Abramoff is the author of the novel Capitol Punishment. By writing this book, he tries to expose the truth about the broken the U.S. Government system really is but also justify his actions and hope to redeem little pieces of his honor. Using clever diction, syntax, and numerous appeals to pathos, Jack Abramoff attempts to repent for his actions and gain redemption. Abramoff’s diction allows for the audience to view his actions in an alternative more positive direction, rather than maliciously and with anger. The first few chapters of the book describe his childhood and formative years. His conservative principles and his calculating self brought him early spotlight and success in the political realm. Abramoff, for about the first half of his...

Actually nothing can be further from the truth and as I grew within the army I began to see a natural competition and even a division among the different services in the areas of moral and ethical standards, although all of us fight the same fight there is still a recruiting battle that exist to find, sign and train the best people possible from the civilian ranks and anytime you have that element ,it will cause potential members to “choose sides”. Each of our services has suffered through many different scandals over ethical dilemmas. The Navy in 1991 suffered the infamous “Tailhook Scandal” where Lt. Rebecca Hansen, a trainee helicopter pilot charged that her failing grades were in direct retaliation for her bringing charges against a flight instructor, and later when Gulf War Hero and then Vice Chief of Naval Operations, Admiral Stanley Arthur, ruled against her, she then reported the incident to Senator David Durenberger of Minnesota who in turn as the New York Times, Goodman, W. (1996) reported “blocked Commander Robert E. Strumpf’s appointment to the Commander of the Navy in the Pacific”, which is the largest operational...

...wife and I once again received a handout from my son's elementary school concerning a non-American study project. This one concerns a week devoted to study of the Mexican Era. It asks for volunteers to help out with a culminating classroom "celebration of all things Mexican." Although my wife, Kim, and I often volunteer to assist with school functions for our children, we will NOT be volunteering for this one, or any other school function centered on non-American subject matter. Bottom line…we've had it with the onslaught of multi-cultural and diversity awareness programs being shoved down the throats of children in this school district. Before you label us racist, or right-wing religious fanatics, or homophobic, or whatever is currently en vogue to defend the Any Local School District agenda this week, I will ABSOLUTELY DENY YOU the opportunity. I defended democracy and freedom for fifteen years in the Air Force, flying hundreds of missions over hostile territory in combat conditions. I worked closely with people of every conceivable race or racial mix you can imagine. I trusted my life to them, and them to me. Not once did we put our tails on the line so my children would be deluged with Mexican, African, or "whatever-can" celebrations. We put our tails on the line for AMERICA! I am an AMERICAN of Dutch-German ancestry. Kim is a Korean citizen who happens to be a LEGAL IMMIGRANT to this country. Our family lives a "multi-cultural" life everyday. Do we see the Any Local School...

...An 8-year-old girl sat on her bed, as her mom called up to tell her ballet would start soon. A sense of excitement overcame her, as she started to think about her friends and becoming a real ballerina. She quickly slipped on her tan tights and stepped into her black, cotton leotard. Her mom slicked her hair back tight, as she squirmed to get away from her hold. When she looked in the mirror, her brown hair laid perfectly in a bun on top of her head and in her brown eyes she saw the next prima ballerina. Before they left for class, the little girl ran upstairs to grab her pink ballet shoes and gracefully slipped them on. She swiftly ran down the stairs and then jumped to her mother’s car. As the little girl entered the dance studio, the smell...

...Nervousness and excitement clutched me as I walked through the chipped white door of my small dance studio and moved onto the worn wooden floors. As I walked across the floor to the barre, I watched my reflection in the mirrors that stretched the length of an entire wall. I recalled that for weeks after my then best friend received her pointe shoes, I asked my instructor every lesson if I was ready as well. The answer was always, “Your ankles aren’t strong enough yet.” In the looking glass, I could see myself as I practiced walking on the balls of my feet to strengthen my ankles and dreamed of dancing gracefully on pointe shoes. I looked into my green eyes reflected back by the mirror and thought to myself resolutely, “Today I will finally receive my pointe shoes.” At the end of the lesson, with hope in my eyes, I approached my instructor and received devastating news. My ankles still weren’t strong enough. In that moment, all my perceived failures as a dancer flashed in the looking glass. I saw myself grimacing while in a half split because I couldn’t push myself level with the ground. I saw my fingers crooked and my arms bent at odd angles. I saw my forehead scrunched with concentration as I tried to perform a full pirouette. The images blurred as my misery overwhelmed me and tears stung my eyes. Yet, that day I forgot to also consider that dancing filled me with joy. Yes, I was only half decent at ballet, but I was eleven years old and had time to improve. My dancing career...

The agency is called “Mice for dance” their dancers have been winning all the competition this year even if they don’t deserve to, Madame Ratlova also explained that she has been hearing a lot of negative comments from her colleagues that they win even if their performance doesn’t even seem to pass the par. The agency is built by a number of famous choreographers and artistic directors that’s why rodents believe so much in them. Madame Ratlova invited the Thea sisters to Milan, Italy to be a ballerina by day and a spy by night. The five rodents arrived at the hotel they were staying in and began to make plenty of friends, when the Mice for dance entered the lobby they all went quite, all dancers were intimidated by them then the muscular dancer leading the group tripped on a stray gym bag then he started blabbering about how he could’ve lost his dreams and exclaimed that the bag’s owner could’ve destroyed the future star of ballet. Madame Ratlova paired Violet with Pytor (Madame Ratlova’s nephew) and Carlotta with Vasily (Madame Ratlova’s nephew) since Colette and the other members of the...

...The Sport of Dancing Courtney Packwood ENG-106/Professor Zafonte March 17, 2013 Dancers should be considered athletes as well as artists. Dancers must use their bodies to express emotions, tell a story, commit to years of physical training, develop stamina, work as a team, take care of their bodies, stretch to prevent injuries, and enter into competitions against other dancers. They deserve to be helped at the athletic office. The dance education majors are not even allowed to ask for an ice pack from the athletic trainers. Members of the Grand Canyon University Dance Team are considered athletes, while the Dance Education majors are not. Both programs involve dance training but yet the school team is the only one of the two that reaps the benefits of being an athlete. The label of dancing being an art or sport has been questioned for decades now but no one has given it a definitive answer. When looking up the definition for athlete, several interpretations are given; overall, the main idea of an athlete being, “a person who is trained or skilled in exercises, sports, or games requiring physical strength, agility, or stamina” according to the Webster dictionary. When comparing this definition to dancers, it is clear that they meet each of those standards. So, why are dancers being denied help from the athletic training office when they demonstrate comparable abilities in physical training, competition, teamwork, and dedication; just as much as any of the athletic teams on...
