The writer of this novel is possibly Petronius Arbiter who served as a governor and later as representative and judge of Nero’s court. Encolpius is the young scholar who is one of the main characters in the story. When Encolpius asks a woman to show him to his new room, she takes him to a whorehouse (house full of prostitutes) instead. Ascyltus is a student as well and a friend of Encolpius, and are both in love with Giton and have an on-going fight over him. Trimalchio is a wealthy gentleman in Puteoli. He holds an extravagant dinner with bizarre dishes, which Encolpius and his friends attend and did nothing but over drinks and over slept.
