...Gabriela Guadron Ms. Rachel Watts ENG 101 May 11, 2012 “Like a Good Neighbor State Farm is there” More than ninety-five percent of Americans own a car. This also means by law that ninety-five percent of Americans should own car insurance, but unfortunately not everyone does. For eighty-nine years State Farm has used the motto, "Be fair and do the right thing for the customers." Since the 1940s State Farm has been the nation's top auto insurer. It is important for State Farm to showcase, through television commercials, what their company can do for the customers. In 2010, State Farm created their new powerful imaginative "Magic Jingle Parking Lot" commercial to maintain their audience while keeping up with their o competitors. The commercial I decided to use was the one where three women are walking to the parking lot as they see a dent on one of the girl’s car. The girl that is a costumer made it seem simple and just said “Like a good neighbor state farm is there” and her agent appears immediately. After the other two girls saw this; they wanted to try the same thing. But they requested different type of agents. One of them said “with a hot guy” and a cute appeared. While the other girl exclaimed “Who is also sensitive” and her agent appeared. At the end of this commercial we see that each of the girls ended up with an agent that most fit them. State Farm uses techniques to draw in customers. Compared to other car insurances, State Farm makes themselves seem very appealing...

...Running head: Psychoanalytic Therapy Psychoanalytic Therapy Helping Relationships Abstract This paper is an illustration of the psychoanalytic therapy and how therapists utilize in during counseling sessions. It will discuss the ego that balances the id and superego, the right from wrong, in people’s personality. This explanation is divided into four concepts the philosophical, development, structural, and process elements. Philosophical Element Psychoanalytic therapy was developed by Sigmund Freud and he believed humans have a basic desire to avoid pain and increase pleasure in their lives (Bryan, 2007, p. 283). According to Gerald Corey, Freud also believed that human behavior is driven by irrational forces, unconscious motivations, and biological and instinctual drives (2005, p. 56). This theory insists that people strive to reach the most pleasure in life and try to avoid situations/behaviors that remind of them of pain. People will use defense mechanisms as a counterattack causing a person to suppress a traumatic event in their lives; however this could cause problems in their future if something happens that makes the experience to resurface. The two instincts that are pivotal to this theory are life and death. Life (sexual) instincts are the survival tactics people use to gain growth, development, and creativity (Corey, 2005, p. 56). On the other hand, the death instinct is a...

...English Composition 1 Diagnostic Test Due: 1/31/12 Cody Evangelous “Black cat, white cat; [Who cares] as long as it catches mice” In life, situations can be looked at and perceived differently, which then leads an individual or a group to decide on the best possible outcome to resolve that situation. The solution is the most important part of the problem and as long as the necessary outcome happens that is all that matters. This is true in the quote above; cats do their job by catching mice, it doesn’t matter what type or what color the cat is. I agree to this to some extent. In certain scenarios it’s not black and white and coming up with one simple solution. Some problems have depth behind them where it’s not just a “cat catching a mice”. More specificity is needed when it comes to in-depth problems. In most case scenarios the quote “Black cat, white cat;[who cares] as long as it catches mice “ applies, but not every scenario. The quote is most evident in when anyone is given a certain task, that person then takes on the responsibility of having to accomplish that task. For example, when a carpenter gets a customer that wants new cabinets in their kitchen. The carpenter then has to complete the requests of the customer, doesn’t matter how he gets the job done, but as long as the cabinets are completed. He could get his five workers to complete the job, or he could do it himself with his two top carpenters. The task is given first and it does not matter how or who...

...September 1, 2013 DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ONLINE CLASSES AND DISTANCE LEARNING Distant learning typically involves you sitting in a classroom while an instructor, via satellite, instructs you’re class or vice versa. You can see them, they can see you. Many online learning is typically for college, you may meet once or twice, but the learning is done through an online server. Usually, you have a book to read, projects to submit electronically and quizzes online to take. So, in my paragraphs, I will describe to you the differences between online classes and distance learning. Honestly, distance learning for me is more accurate than online learning, because you can learn more in a classroom setting. I like to be in a classroom setting because, an instructor can teach you more, and actually break down the work for you step by step. Also, if you need additional help, a teacher is actually there to help you with the work. On the other hand, online classes are actually convent for some people that work. You can do it anywhere, anytime, as long as it is done by the due date. My disadvantage of online learning is that, if I need help with any project, I can’t actually get in touch with my teacher right then. I would have to wait until the teacher contact me. In my conclusion, I would prefer distance learning over online learning. But, for right now, I would have to take online classes due to my own schedule. I like that online classes give me the flexibility to do my homework...

...Violence in Music Videos and Music Lyrics has a negative impact on children. Music videos that expose profanity and sexuality are inappropriate and leave a negative impression on young children. Violence in music videos can cause health problem. Music videos that promote negative lyrics are affecting young children. Music lyrics with vulgar languages affect the development and well-being of young children. For example, the study author (Stone, 2009) found “that music with explicit references to drugs, sex or violence can be associated with negative effects on school work behavior and emotions” (p. 2). Media violence not only provokes violence among children, it provokes sexual behaviors. However, Music videos add reinforcement to what is being heard with the use of visuals. Rap music video shows an elevated level of content presented of tobacco and alcohol use than any other kind of music videos. Exposure to violence, sexual imagery and alcohol in music videos persuade violent and hostile feelings, potentially aggressive behavior that may direct them to certain types of sadistic behavior. Teens listen to on an average 40 hours of music per week. Children under eight are still developing emotionally. They cannot distinguish between reality and fantasy. They tend to imitate what they hear on the radio and see on T.V. They idolize artists and build themselves to be like them. Children use music to obtain and control of their sensitivity level and to deal with seclusion...

...Before I took the class ENG 101, I struggled so much with writing. From sending simple emails to people, to sending texts to my children, I had always had a hard time collecting my thoughts and writing them down. I did not think I learned very much from this class, yet I was expecting it to be very difficult for me. Because of my origin, my native language is not English. When I speak, my thoughts usually come to me in Amharic, my native language. It used to be so challenging for me to speak English because I would mix up the two languages, but because of all the writing exercises and assignments, we’d had to do this semester, I don’t struggle with that anymore. ENG 101 completely changed the way I see the English language and writing. The first class I took at Shelton State was Basic English. Taking that class significantly improved the way I spoke English, but it did not do a lot to help my writing skills. This semester I signed up for ENG 101 hoping to improve my reading and writing skills. When I started the class, my expectations were pretty high. I wanted all A’s and to be a great writer, but most of...

...Exemplification Essay How many times have you heard the saying “It’s not the clothes that makes the person, it’s the person that makes the person?” I know it’s a mouth full. And we’d all like to believe that, right? But unfortunately in today’s society that’s not the case. How you dress is a representation of you. Like a first impression and we all know you only get one. But exactly why does it matter? Why would anyone care about how I dress? Well that’s what where here to find out. In today’s world how you dress is a reflection of you. It defines how people will react or treat you. Possibly even stereotype & judge you. Luckily it all depends on the type of social situation you are in. If you dress appropriately for the right occasion you’ll have nothing to worry about. Let’s use me for an example. I went job hunting for the first time when I was 16. I didn’t know any better. I went to different stores in the mall wearing a pair of ripped up jeans with my American Eagle striped polo shirt and my most favorite pair of black and white low top Chuck Taylors. I felt like I could conquer the world, or at least the mall. I went to the mall around 2pm and left around 5pm with no job applications. I didn’t understand it, every store I went into had a “Now Hiring” sign, but I kept getting turned down. Soon my “conquer the world” attitude disappeared as I took the bus back home. When I got home my grandma asked me how the job search went. When I told her what happened she sat me...

...ESSAY 1 Mike Gaston ENG 101 ENG 101 – C02 – Spring 2015 LUO THESIS: Chores are a beneficial and important factor in the upbringing of children for many reasons. Outline: INTRODUCTION: In the military I have met many people from many walks of life. What I have gathered and witnessed from my encounters were that basic household skills were lacking in some and not others. I found that many of the people I met who were not raised to do chores lacked basic household skills; whereas the people raised to do chores did not. The ones who lacked these household skills were at a disadvantage when it came time to living on their own; having to be taught how to do laundry, cook, and clean at the age of 21 was not only difficult for some, but embarrassing as well. I, as well as my brothers, were raised with the notion that chores were essential. Performing chores as children aided us into our adulthood. Chores helped us become better team players, it fostered a sense of discipline and personal responsibility and an understanding of risk/reward, and it also taught us basic life skills to living and surviving on our own. I still believe that chores are a beneficial and important factor in the upbringing of children in our society today. 1. CHORES AID IN BEING A BETTER TEAM PLAYER a. Chores teach children (siblings) to work as a team to speed up the cleaning process. b. They teach single kids to help the burden of cleaning for the parents ...

...The Internet as a Powerful and Empowering Tool A computer in the hands of a conscientious student is a powerful tool that, utilized to its fullest potential, can encourage that student to become a success in his or her studies. Some believe that the use of computers in an educational environment diminishes the quality of material turned in by students; I disagree. There is great potential in accessing the millions of megabytes of data available on the World Wide Web, potential that should not be overlooked. It is incumbent on the educators today to guide their students in the best way to harness the material they find on the internet. “Most of the data my students Net is like trash fish,” says Judith Levine in her article I Surf, Therefore I Am, “and it is hard for them to tell a dead one-legged crab from a healthy sea bass.”(Levine, p.223) I hear her frustration with students who feel that using the information on the computer is the way to an easy passing grade. However, I also can see where a little guidance from her will go a long way toward helping these students sort through and discover the pieces of information that will help them. Students look to their teachers to guide them. Many schools and teachers have not realized that there is a variety of ways students can access information over the internet. According to a study conducted by the American Institutes for research, “Students report that there is a substantial disconnect between how they use the Internet...

...My First Thoughts Of College Life changing, life altering, the time to figure out who you trully are. These are all things I heard before even attending my first day. These are things that ive been told time and time again about this heaven we know as "College". Where parties rule and your encouraged to pick your own spesfic classes, where and when you have them, everything. All to fit around your personal schedule so that you can live your life the way you want. Its the freedom of becoming an adult thats opened my mind to the whole college experience and so far its been pheomenoal. At first, i was one of the skeptics with a multitude of questions and none of them being answered. Its a whole new life and everybody expects you to understand things right from the get go. But deep down just getting here has been one of the biggest headaches ive ever had to put up with. My housing was consistantly changing, my grades had trouble transfering over and nobody ever picks up a damn phone now adays. Nobody talks on the phone anymore its all stupid machines chanting you to press 1 for the operator which was usually followed by a 20-30 minute wait. So as you can tell things got realy stressful before i could even begin. But now that im here living the life theres nothing to complain about. Everybody is super chill and down for whatever, my kind of people. College is full of surprises and with every step you decide to either take the risks or head home the safe way. Its the life i think...
