Eng 121 Journal

...Week 4 Journal - Summarizing ENG 121 Instructor: Clinton Hale November 24th, 2014 Summarizing David Foster Wallace’s “Consider the Lobster” is an in-depth 2004 article about the annual Maine Lobster Festival. The event is held every July in an area of Maine known as the mid-coast, which Wallace describes as, “…from Owl’s Head and Thomaston in the south, to Belfast in the north” (Wallace.2004). Throughout the narrative, Wallace deftly uses concrete language to bring the reader into the tents at the festival, Styrofoam plate in hand along with him. When describing the fare on offer for instance, Wallace talks about the soft drinks being “iceless and flat” and describes the coffee as “convenience store coffee”. Apart from being fairly humorous, these descriptions help the reader immerse themselves in the narrative. We’ve all had awful and overpriced meals at county fairs and so when we read Wallace’s description, we know exactly what he is talking about. Wallace’s overall take on the festival is that it is a slice of a vanishing Americana, but perhaps it is one that should be relegated to the past. Festivals like the one Wallace attended used to be much more commonplace as a way for areas of the country to celebrate regional interests which may seem unworthy of celebration in other areas. Although enjoyed and heartily endorsed by most locals Wallace says, several national groups, including PETA have been campaigning against the festival on the grounds of animal cruelty...

Eng 121, Discussion 1

...Week3 – Discussion 1 I found the point of view in the Persuasion is to get others to see things your way or to convince them that there is something that needs to be done or said. To get someone to think like you do. Both Persuasion and Argument are interchangeably, persuasion writing is to convince you to see things their way, and in general, where as argument is a specific type of persuasive that is based on logic and evidence. I found that the tone for Persuasion should be strong emotional appeal. First engage your heart, you can point out others' views that you felt were wrong, but don't attack the one that said it. Emotional appeals have a reasoning behind them, you have to be honest and never misleading. I found the structure for Persuasion writing is to; Have an Introduction, the controversial issue will need to be introduced, you may want to give two side to the controversies, give your opinion on the ideas, and set up your thesis statement. Go on to the body and make at least two paragraphs, take each of your ideas and put down in separate paragraphs why you like these ideas, give statistics, or get someone who is an expert in the field to give you something to go on to support you words. In the conclusion include your thesis statement. You can back up your statements and ideas and propose the readers take some action. Then add in some sense of closer with a strong ending. I found Exposition or Expository writing are used to help explain...

Personally, there are not many people that I know who have graduated from a college which is why we see most people going back to school after so many years. There can be many reasons why a person does not finish school the first time around. May it be because of money issues, their interest were elsewhere at the time, a change in career directed their focus elsewhere, but whatever that may be it happens more than we would like to think. I just so happen to fall into this category of people going back to school after I had been once before but never finished. To achieve a good education, one should attend both high school and college. Although some people think high school has a lot in common with college, I find them to be very different. After graduating from high school I enrolled into college and noticed that there are many differences between them. A few of these differences include the attitude and responsibilities of the teachers and students and the amount of work given to the students. To begin with, there are many ways in which the attitudes of the teachers in high school differ from the attitudes of the teachers in college. In high school my teachers seemed to be stricter and have more rules for the students to follow. The teachers were also responsible for making sure each student obeyed these rules to the fullest extent and carried out disciplinary actions for those who did not obey them. One example in which a teacher has taken on a disciplinary action was when a student was tardy or skipped their scheduled class; the student usually received detention along with an “F” for the day in the class the skipped or was tardy too. Although attendance is also required in college and many enforce...

Single-Stage Scheduling of Multiproduct Batch Plants: an Edible-Oil Deodorizer Case Study

...Ind. Eng. Chem. Res. 2010, 49, 8657–8669 8657 Single-Stage Scheduling of Multiproduct Batch Plants: An Edible-Oil Deodorizer Case Study Songsong Liu,† Jose M. Pinto,‡ and Lazaros G. Papageorgiou*,† Centre for Process Systems Engineering, Department of Chemical Engineering, UniVersity College London, Torrington Place, London WC1E 7JE, U.K., and Process Systems R&D, Praxair Inc., 39 Old Ridgebury Rad, Danbury, Connecticut 06810 This article considers the short-term scheduling of a single-stage batch edible-oil deodorizer that can process multiple products in several product groups. Sequence-dependent changeovers occur when switching from one product group to another. Based on the incorporation of products into product groups, mixed integer linear programming (MILP) models are proposed for two scenarios, with and without backlogs. Then, the models are successfully applied to a real-world case with 70 product orders over a 128-h planning horizon. Compared with a literature model developed for a similar problem, the proposed models exhibit significantly better performance. 1. Introduction In the past decade, a large number of optimization models and approaches have been proposed for batch scheduling and planning. A number of reviews on the planning and scheduling of batch processes have been presented in the literature.1-6 Initially, discrete-time formulation models using the state-task network7 (STN) or resource-task network8 (RTN) were used for batch scheduling problems...

Reserach Paper Proposal

...Bartel Williams Professor Johnson Eng 121-013 7 April 2014 Research Paper Proposal Center Title, Do Not Bold or Underline Question Posed: Throughout the book we hear Rose Mary’s complaint: “I’m a grown woman now, why can’t I do what I want to do” (Walls 58)? At what point can adults do whatever they want, if at all? When is it time to put other needs before your own? Why does Rose Mary behave this way? To answer this question I am going to attempt to diagnose Rose Mary with a mental illness, to justify her thinking and reasoning throughout the memoir. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, bipolar disorder is "a brain disorder that causes unusual shifts in mood, energy, activity levels, and the ability to carry out day-to-day tasks" Jeannette seems to understand that her mother is mentally ill, “"She'd be happy for days on end, announcing that she decided to think only positive thoughts" She goes on to say "But the positive thoughts would give way to negative thoughts...when that happened, Mom would refuse to get out of bed... she would lay wrapped up in blankets on the sofa bed, sobbing about how much she hated her life" (Walls 157). I also will study her artwork, and how she balanced art and motherhood. Was her artwork so important to put before her Children’s welfare? “A FEW DAYS AFTER Mom and Dad brought me home, I cooked myself some hot dogs. I was hungry, Mom was at work on a painting, and no one else was there to fix them for me (Walls...
