English month activities and contests

A. Spelling bee - to spell words correctly

Mechanics: 1. Each participant should bring with him/her a 1/8 illustration board, chalk and a rag. 2. The participants will have 10 seconds to think about their answers. 3. There will be three rounds; easy, average and difficult with ten questions each. 4. Proctors will tally scores and eliminate participants after every round. 5. There will be three winners; the first, second and the third placer.

B. Essay writing - To write unified, coherent and well organized paragraphs.
Mechanics:
1. Participants will be given exactly 1 hour for writing their entries. 2. The topic of the essay will be based on what the proctor will give. 3. The entries should be at least 500 to 700 words. 4. The entries will be read and judged by the proctors according to the given set of criteria. Creativity 40%, structure 20%, adherence to topic 10%, grammar 10%, length 10%, “wow” factor 10%. 5. There will be three winners; the first, second and the third placer.

C. Declamation - To recite a declamation piece with proper pausing, intonation and rhythm with proper facial expression as well.
Mechanics:
1. the criteria for judging participants will be as follows: * Delivery of speech (enunciation, voice quality, pronunciation) 50% * Gestures/emotions 30% * Stage presence 20%

D. Story telling - To tell a story with feeling and with facial expression taking note of correct intonation, pronunciation and proper diction.
Mechanics:
1. Participants will be given what piece shall they story tell 3 days before the contest. 2. They will be judged with the following criteria. 3. Delivery (pronunciation, enunciation, voice quality) 40%, stage presence 20%, E. Extemporaneous speech - To speak one's ideas spontaneously after a few minutes of preparation. To exhibit one's craft in organizing a meaningful speech off hand.
Mechanics:
1. Participants will be given 15 minutes to ready their speech after the announcement of the given topic. 2. The maximum time limit for each speech is 3 minutes. Participants will be cut off if time ran out. 3. Criteria for judging will be based on content-50% delivery (pronunciation, diction, voice quality)-30% and stage presence-20%

F. Cosplay – to be able to portray chosen characters well.
Mechanics:
1. Participants can form groups (no maximum number required). 2. Participants can portray different literary characters, as well as movie, anime, cartoon, historic, or personalities. 3. Props can also be used to add extra “wow” factor and to impress the audience. 4. The group itself will be judged as a whole and the criteria for judging is as follows:
Craftsmanship (costume, makeup, props) 40%
Characterization 30%
Stage performance 20%
Audience impact 10%

G. Scrabble board game – to be able to play and win the game of scrabble.
Mechanics:
1. Each participant will fight against one another. 2. With every battle, the winning participant will move on and fight again with another participant. 3. The last participant who’ll win will be awarded first place, while the runner ups will be awarded the second and third place.

H. Speech choir - To develop creativity and craftsmanship among students through on stage performance.
Mechanics:
1. There shall be one (1) contest piece. The contest piece shall be given two (2) weeks before the contest. 2. The number of contestants shall not be less than ten (10) members. Maximum is twenty (20) participants. 3. Costumes and props are allowed. 4. The criteria for judging are as follows:

Interpretation (manner in which the piece is internalized & presented)

Delivery (quality of voice, fluency, pronunciation, blending & harmony)

Stage Presence (stage poise, eye contact & audience impact)

Costume & Sound Effects (attire is related to concept, sound production)

I. Poster making - To develop one's innate creativity and aesthetic adeptness through Poster Making.
Mechanics:
1. Participants should bring their art materials (1 whole white cartolina, pencil, eraser, oil pastels, or markers) 2. They will be given an allotted time of 1 hour to finish their works. 3. They will be judged according to the criteria that follows:
Creativity and presentation 40%
Originality 30%
Relevance to the theme 30%

J. Quiz bee – to answer questions correctly. Involves language and literature.
Mechanics:
1. There are four (4) rounds in this category namely: Easy, Average, Difficult and Clincher. 2. In easy round (10) questions will be asked, (5) in Average round, (5) for difficult round and in case of a tie, tie breaker questions will be given until the tie is broken in the Clincher round 3. 3. Points are assigned for each question in every round:

o Easy questions 1 pt. each o Average questions 3 pts. each o Difficult questions 5 pts. each o Clincher question 7 pts. each

4. Each team will answer the same questions. The quiz master will read the questions twice only. Contestants will only answer after the quiz master says “go”. 5. Each team is given the following time in order to answer the questions: 10 seconds per question (Easy round), 15 seconds per question (Average round), 20 seconds per question (Difficult round), and 15 seconds per question (Clincher round). The contestants will automatically stop writing and raise their flashcards after the buzzer sounds. All final answers must be written on a cartolina sheet in BOLD letters. 6. There will be a first place, second place, and third place winner.
