The Guilt
A speech in defense of Lilian Thurgood
My name is Lilian Thurgood and I cannot believe how our society is today. Every day people knock on my door to ask for money, work, clothes and food. Usually I deal with it but yesterday was crossing the line. At first, I heard my dogs barking at the gate where a boy stood with one of these brown letters in his hands. He asked for work but I did not have any. Instead, I gave him five rand as a donation, which he would not take if he did not work for them first. I let him work for the five rand I gave him, but suddenly an hour later he wanted 10 rand in addition to the five rand I already gave him. He walked slowly towards me, and that was the moment I realized he was dangerous. Black people like him can never be trusted. The only way of getting him out of my house was to send the dogs after him and threaten him with a gun in my own house. How can that be so? Shall we tolerate how this is going? Shall we tolerate to be afraid in our own homes, and shall we tolerate that we have to sleep with guns under our pillows to feel safer? I do not think so. We have to fight for our freedom so we will never feel insecure in the streets again. So I say let us start the fighting now!

I worked for an hour and told her it was ten rand but she refused to give any more money. The next thing I know is that I have dogs all over me and after a
