...map. I have always been shy and not confident since was a little girl. And due to this I have missed out on a lot of experiences, so now I hope for this class to help make up for those lost adventures and learning opportunities. I want to learn how to independently take care of myself when camping. I desire to learn how to be on my own when camping and learn many different ways to enjoy nature that I have not learned yet like; snow shoeing, mountain biking, and kayaking. I really don’t want to only learn skills in this class but be more confident when it comes to learning unfamiliar ways of exploring and/or enjoying nature. I hope that from this class I become an even better-rounded person, with many different experience’s, skills, and knowledge of nature. I think the only thing I am nervous to learn is how to rock climb, mainly because I’m not exactly comfortable when it comes to heights, and my upper body strength is not good, but I am willing to try it. I also am a little nervous to learn things that I have to memorize because my memory is not great. Otherwise I’m pretty happy and open to trying anything and learning lots!!! I think this class will tie into the conserve school experience by REALLY teaching us the skills of not only surviving in nature but also enjoying nature in many different ways, so we’re...

...and set the best example. As a result, I was excellent at disseminating information, but I was not a lot of fun. I guess that I somehow believed that “being the teacher” and truly enjoying the job were mutually exclusive. Although I was a person who easily made friends and around whom people felt comfortable, I quickly realized that the students were intimidated by me. This was not the kind of atmosphere that I wanted in my classroom. However, I thought that I would “lose control” if I didn’t keep everyone on task at all times. After many role play activities and what if... scenarios with my senior teacher, I learned strategies to help the students to be comfortable and expressive in their classroom while maintaining order rather than control. This lesson served me well during my years of teaching and is second nature now. The second piece of advice was an extension of the first. Once I learned to relax and enjoy my time with the students, I became free to employ different teaching techniques and use everyone and everything available to me to help create an atmosphere conducive to risk taking which fosters learning. I learned that there was no one way or consistently correct way to teach. I had to allow myself and the students the flexibility of making mistakes and using those mistakes as learning...

...Teachers commonly are committed to enjoying their work, to their students, to the content areas and are dedicated to their occupation. However, 21st century students attending school have exceptionally distinct experiences and viewpoints of what their education should consist of compared to their 20th century equivalents. These technological savvy students navigate daily living quite differently than a lot of their digital immigrant teachers. Subsequently, relating with them, connecting with them and encouraging them at this time calls for teachers to be more receptive to innovative approaches of teaching and supporting students (Jacobs, 2010, p. 197). In any case, there are methods for teachers to utilize in order to maintain interest and...

...and weaknesses and it is always a personal choice how they will use them. Today I took a survey that showed me my strengths and I want to speak about them. The two positive strengths that contribute to my personal life , my surrounding, and my learning experience are gratitude and a positive attitude. I have noticed being a grateful person allows you to have interpersonal relationships with people around you. When you care about people, they care about you too. I always had a close relationship with my family; from early childhood I have been taught to be thankful for everything. If you are enjoying every day of your life, as well as thanking the people around you for that, there will always be a flow of positive energy amongst you. Having a positive attitude is a strength of mine that contributes to a happy personal life, and a good work environment. A positive attitude is contagious. How can anybody be mad or upset at a person who is always positive and giving compliments? My personal life is great because there is no negative energy in it. I have recognized these as my top strengths, I will always be mindful of them, and try to utilize them in every moment of my life. My goal for this semester is to use them in service learning project, which is planting trees. During this project I will be really thankful for our nature and I will try to make a difference. So after all I enjoy discovering new strengths of mine and I hope that the “Leading Responsibly” class will help...

...otherwise have an opportunity in which to display their art. I have always been a believer in real-life experience ever since a young age; perhaps because the qualities of my education in previous years that helped inspire me from the three years old. I went to a Montessori pre-K school which emphasized practical life and learning by experiencing the outside world, rather than learning by just listening to words. I ‘ve always been curious as to why schools do not offer classes in practical life – like how to balance a check book, how to budget expenses or even how to ace an interview. I finally learnt that practical lesson during a summer job at Michael Stars, the retail chain, when I actually thought they had taken money from me. This was until I was explained that my salary and commission were subject to tax and social security. I have to admit, it was a huge surprise for me! However, I have really gained intellect and skill from the internships I have had the opportunity to have, learning how to research market trends, present to executive teams, how to style for photo shoots and how to update social media for a company and so much more. I am fully enjoying my electives this year at school—Graphic Design...

...When assessing my my multiple intelligence's using the survey by Robert M. Sherfield I found out that of the 8 types my top 3 are Visual/Spatial, Musical/Rhythm, and Logic/Math. I scored the highest on Musical/Rhythm followed by Logic/Math then Visual/Spatial. After learning about the differences in the 3 categories it comes to no surprise that those are my top 3. I have been a avid music fan all my life enjoying almost all types of music. Math has always been a strong subject of mine during school. The visual part of the multiple intelligence's allows me to look at an object and change it in my mind to see what can be made different or better. It helps to verify similar objects and why they are similar. It helps me to create charts or graphs depicting the work that I wish or need to accomplish. The musical/rhythm side of me helps my studying when I play music in the background while working or studying. I am usually taping on something to the beat of a song when I’m listening to music. I tend to make up words to a song even when I know the lyrics. The new lyrics usually are more on the comical side. The logic/math part is probably the one I relate to the most. I tend to pick up on math work fairly quick. I see patterns and can figure out how they will continue. I can do a decent amount of math in my head cause I can visualize myself doing the work. When putting these 3 multiple intellingences together and thinking about how they apply to how I solve problems and complete...

...beautiful sounds. I learned that it was a unique style of music that had been compiled and created using techniques of many different nations and cultures. I could hear a lot of African techniques in the music they were playing. I enjoyed hearing the differences between feminine And masculine sounds. I am actually interested in taking the class at some point after watching this presentation. Everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves and really appeared to be passionate about the music they were playing. I think it would be fun to learn more about how to play the drums and to learn exactly what pieces come from what nations. They explained some of the instruments and where they were believed to be originated from. In one hour it was hard to learn as much as I desired about world drumming. The man who presented the event was very animated and very entertaining and had a captivating way of explaining and educating us on his passion for world drumming. I had never seen instruments like these before and I enjoyed seeing them first hand rather than learning on the internet or reading a book about them. I am definitely going to look into taking some sort of a cultural music class so that I can expose myself to more cultures through the music that those cultures enjoy. I am glad that I chose to attend this...

The article almost made me believe that the grades fail due to not enough studying and working to much. Maybe it should take in account that it is not all about work. It should take into account that this is the first time these students have lived on there own, without parental supervision. How freshman students have to learn how to balance school, work and outside social activities. Time management is something we learn, it is not imbedded in us or part of our nature, but by trial and error we learn to bring balance in. It is a time that we start learning how to manage our time, while accomplishing our grades, and enjoying our surroundings. The H.W. Wilson Company/Wilson Web Author: Sarath A. Nonis, Gail I. ...When I was a child, I thought of education as something everyone had the privilege to receive and that it was a simple gateway to a successful job and life after school. As I grew up, I found this was not true at all. Education for many people is not a right, rather a privilege which they do not have. I hated going to school because I thought that I was learning everything that I didn’t need in order to be successful. I believed that as long as I attended school and paid attention during math class, I would become a doctor or a lawyer. As I grew up and matured, I began to love education. I loved learning about everything. I did not enjoy going to school every day early in the morning but I enjoyed broadening and exercising my mind. I had always thought that everyone was able to receive education but as I grew up, I realized that this was not the case. Education should be a basic human right no matter your age, sex, race or beliefs; unfortunately this is not the case for many people around the world. Malala Yousafzai is a young female who is continuing to fight for women’s rights concerning education. Where she is from, the Taliban have at times banned girls from attending school. Yousafzai continues to fight for something that should be a basic human right no matter the age or sex. These kinds of stories are what changed my attitude towards education. I learned that there are people all around the world who are not as fortunate as us to have education as a basic right. After...

It was not until last semester in my English 111 class that I started enjoying what I read by actually evaluating the text in further detail. Active reading means reading something in further detail by evaluating and analyzing the text in different ways then just re-reading the text. By doing this you establish more support in your assessment. This hands-on-way to read, by highlighting or writing in the margins, is a way to enhance the reader ability to expand their assessment of the text. Active reading also consists of reading, asking questions, and examining the text. This is different from any other reading technics I have used in the past. Active reading...

...a degree in sports medicine before changing my degree to teaching. Throughout my first year teaching I really enjoying teaching science and found that the students and I had energetic and engaging classes as we learned about biology, meteorology, physics, and chemistry. My mind had been exposed to all types of science and at the end of the year I passed the AEPA Middle Grades General Science test so that I could teach 7th grade science as well. As the small school I worked at continued to grow, I adjusted what I taught, expanding my knowledge up to 7th grade as well. Over my four years at that school, I helped our school transition into a Core Knowledge© school by planning our transition in science so that no student would have gaps in their knowledge. Along with two other middle grade teachers, I worked to align the new ELA standards with the science standards which were then adopted by the science teachers in my district. I’ve spent the last three years working on a national study. Throughout the study I worked alongside my district science coordinator as well as other people from the study to analyze the ways students learn science. In addition to participating in the study I facilitated the meetings for our district and another nearby teachers involved in one branch of the study. This year, I find myself teaching seventh grade science. Again I find myself enjoying our science content and my seventh graders continue to love absolutely everything about science. I’ve fine-tuned...
