Dr. Samuel A. Mudd did not deserve to be imprisoned for 3 years. He was never part of the conspiracy and there was no proof that he was involved in it. The punishment he got was way too harsh when he did nothing wrong to deserve it.
Dr. Mudd was 30 miles away when the tragedy happened. In the text it reads,”...that at the time the tragedy was enacted Dr. Mudd was at his residence in the country, thirty miles from the place of the crime.” Dr. Mudd could not have been part of the crime because he wasn’t even there when it happened. In the text it reads,” Mudd did what he could for Booths ankle, he provided Booth with crutches, and collected $25 as his fee.” Although Mudd did help Booth, he had no idea he just assassinated the president. From someone elses opposing view they might think he is guilty because he did help Booth with his ankle, but let me show you why he is not guilty. In the text it reads,” ...there was no proof that Mudd was involved in the conspiracy…” This shows that there was no proof at all to show that Mudd was guilty. He did the right thing to help someone out that was in need. If Mudd would have known that Booth just committed one of the biggest crimes in the world, he would’ve turned him in right away and would have never helped him in the first place.
In conclusion, Mudd is not guilty whatsoever. There was no proof that he was part of the conspiracy and that he was involved in the assassination. Dr. Mudd did not deserve his punishment for being part of the conspiracy when he never was actually part of it. His punishment was way too harsh and he did not deserve
