...Ethics Essay ETH/316 version 2 Ethics Essay Utilitarianism is doing what is good for the team, putting the teams’ needs above your own. It says it is morally right to put the needs of others above your own to create a greater good. DE ontologically theory is about doing your duty because it follows a set of rules, it is the right thing to do based on the laws and rules. Virtue theory focuses on a history of excellence or doing good. It spends a lot of time on a proven character trait of excellence and good. Insert the paraphrased material (Michael Bolan 2009). I use both since I am a former military man and doing my duty is now ingrained in to me as is a Christian background and upbringing. I have learned in life to do what is good and benefit is the team, to support the team above my needs. This ensures the cooperation and survival of the team. But I only can go so far with this because sometimes what is thought to be good goes against my morals and in the long run would deteriorate the team. When this happens, I have to fall back on a set of rules and do what the right thing to do is based on a set of laws and rules. This not always seen as best for the team however, it is it gives balance, respect, and order that everyone in the team can follow, recognize and respect. If it is not followed, the team eventually breaks down. Both theories align with my beliefs. I put the team or group ahead of my needs and when necessary I follow the rules which at times...

...Ethics Denise Griego ETH/316 June 4, 2014 Angela Peinado Ethics Many cultures have different perspectives of ethics and morals. Not one opinion or perspective is correct. Religious groups think their perspective and knowledge of ethics and morals pertain to God or gods. Theists think their perspective does no pertain to a God. Which group is correct? In this essay the information obtained will describe what each groups knowledge is pertaining to ethics and morals. The person obtaining the knowledge will be the one to determine which is correct and has the best definition. Similarities between virtue theory, utilitarianism, and deontological ethics are they all to making the right and wrong decisions. Determining which will be most effective with the way one was raised, or learned while growing up. Everyone should have been taught right from wrong at a young age. Not everyone is taught the same beliefs, but knowing right from wrong is the key issue. Differences between virtue theory, utilitarianism, and deontological ethics are the group, or range of people the ethics or morals is taught to. Also the group of people or person decides which form is best needed in the situation at hand. Virtue theory is described as what is means to be good; the Greek philosopher Aristotle described the virtual theory as a median between excesses, and habits of the character. Thomas Aquinas philosopher and theologian priest adds the religious component to the virtue theory. Father Thomas...

...Erica Reich ETH/316 March 23, 2013 Dr. Michelle Kuamoo According to our book Basic Ethics the definition of a “virtue theory also known as virtue ethics is also sometimes called agent- based or character ethics” (Boylan, 2009, p. 133). This can be non-moral or moral. A non- moral example would be achieving excellence in whatever one may do. A personal experience that I have experience with virtue ethics is that when I played volleyball in middle school and I was the best player on the team. I always achieved excellence when I played. When you are the key player and your team is counting on you then all you want to do is strive to be the best. You don’t want to let your team down, you want to give it your all and you want the rest of the team to give it their all as well. “Utilitarianism is a theory that suggests that an action is morally right when that action is morally right when the action produces more total utility for the group than any other alternative” (Boylan, 2009, p. 153). A personal experience that I have had with utilitarianism is working in teams for school projects. We thought that doing the project one way was the right way until we turn it in and get a poor grade. The reason is that they wanted it done another way and the way that they wanted it done made more sense then the way that we did it. A good lesson that I learnt from this is that if you are having trouble with something then don’t hesitate to ask the teacher for help or if they can explain what...

...Ethical Essay University of Pheonix Monica King ETH/316 September 26, 2013 Don Kelly Utilitarianism is an ethical theory that debates that an act is correct only if it conforms to the principle of utility. Jeremy Bentham, Its founder, believed it was essential for society to depend on reason instead of metaphysics (what is ultimately there? What is it like?). Deontology is anti- utilitarianism. Immanuel Kant was one of the primary advocates of deontology theory. Deontologists are apprehensive with the perception of duty. They are related with satisfying what is perceived to be their ethical duty – whether it makes people happy or not. Deontologists embrace that correct activities are explained by duty. Once it is known for what it is that a person is duty assured to do morally, then ‘natural’ fit act can be carried out in spite of the consequences. Virtue ethics highlights the role of a person’s character and the morals of a person’s character symbolizes for defining or assessing ethical behavior. When associating the similarities and dissimilarities between deontology and utilitarianism, and it was established that they associate with how someone judge’s ethics and morality. The theories all contain judging in diverse aspects, if it is in that instant, what occurs afterwards, or within a lifespan. The morals and ethics following these philosophies all involve with what is correct, or what is preeminent for the current time, then split pathways as the theories operate...

...Ethics Essay Brock Q. Griffin ETH/316 October 01, 2012 Aron Muse Ethics Essay The science of right and wrong in human action, or as some believe it is what society deems to be right and wrong is what defines ethics (Boylan, 2009). What makes up ethics in a person? Is it his character as in virtue, or does it relate to family influence or a team concept as in utilitarianism. Does it manifest from a sense of duty as with deontological ethics? In this paper we’ll take a look at the differences in how each addresses ethics and morality. Deontological In this theory of ethics the emphasis is on doing what is right just because it’s right. However this theory can be related to both virtue and at some level utilitarianism. The similarity is that without a standard or virtue to hold you accountable you wouldn’t just up and perform deontological ethics. Your morals kick in as your foundation and you just do without thinking. Example is to open a door for someone, or to stand-up and let a pregnant woman sit down in a crowded area. In that situation you normally don’t think you just react. Utilitarianism Is the team concept or the action that produces more of a utility for the group. Utilitarianism is often contrasted with deontological for the fact that it’s calculated or thought out before the action is done. Where it differs from virtue is that it might not be installed in you, but in order to not bring negativity toward your group you perform...

...Ethics Kimberly ETH 316 March 3, 2014 Dr. Timothy Dorr Ethics Ethics as a whole area as cut and dry as one may think; there are layers and different types of general ethics; utilitarianism, deontology, and virtue theory. Each all of course center around ethics but each has a different action where they would be best applicable and individually involve morality. Every adult is likely to have encountered a personal situation where one of these theories. A morally right action that produces a most favorable result for the group would suggest utilitarianism. Our text describes this as, “The greatest good for the greatest number.” (Boylan, 2009) This theory is much like the democratic approach taken to politics today in such that changes, policies are weighed against other ideas and we are told that the idea that does the good for the most people within a group would be selected. Utilitarianism addresses morality by selecting the action that will do the most good and ethics by selecting that action on the intent that this item will be best for the majority. Deontology is a theory that more or less illustrates that a person should do the right thing simply because it is the right thing to do, regardless of the consequences of that action. This is the stark opposite of utilitarianism because there is no calculation of other options to taking a particular action. You are simply doing the right thing based on principle alone not for the good of the group. Deontology commands...

...Community Comparison Team b ETH 316 April, 13 2010 Jerry Community Comparison A community is nothing but mutual respect. People can form a community without having common beliefs, without having shared identity or defining themselves in terms of each other. Numbers are irrelevant; ideals and desires are irrelevant; even the extent of mutual support and patronage is largely irrelevant. Community is a state of mind. It’s a sense of belonging that springs from feeling other people accept you despite, not because, of who you are. (Edwards, 2007). When comparing the differences and similarities between each team member’s communities it would be hard to start with the differences. The similarities are glaring. Every single community has an array of people from around the world. With a diverse group of people that brings together different cultures, beliefs, and religion, but what it does not change are the day to day issues that we all deal with. Each community has its fair share of poverty, gangs, drugs and crime. The communities also have people that are wealthy and well off. When looking at the differences one can look at the citizens, poverty level, and the businesses. Some communities are very family oriented and some are college towns where there are many young folks looking to find their way in life. It is safe to say that all community’s need to come together as one to make the community a strong place where people can work and play, then ultimately...

...Learning Team Reflection Angela Lewis (Alcoset), Dawn Nyberg, J. Troy McMurtrey, Tammie Scott ETH /316 January 16, 2012 Ted Haas Learning Team Reflection Simulations administer a productive learning environment for students. The use of simulations in education is becoming an effective tool for students and offers several benefits. A major benefit of simulations is that it enhances the problem solving skills of a student. This week Team D went through two simulations that allowed us to make ethical decisions based on the four lenses, where each had a different perspective in the decision-making process. In this summary, Team D will compare and contrast the usefulness of doing assignments based on simulations as opposed to writing paper s that answer questions. Team D will also make a decision regarding which we prefer as a team and provide the reasons. When comparing the usefulness of doing assignments based on simulations as opposed to writing papers that mostly answer questions, Team D finds there are differences between the two. Doing assignments based on simulations is a structured approach, which gives the opportunity for a more hands learning experience. Writing papers that mostly answer questions is a different approach that externalizes our learning. One needs to find information to answer the questions asked when writing a paper. This may require some research...

...Ethics Essay Edenn James ETH/316 June 2, 2014 Mary Carter Ethics Essay For my paper I want to start off with what I believe to my understanding of each of the theories and then give the similarities and difference and then a personal experience using one of the theories. VIRTUE ETHICS-this theory is about your character and how others might see you as being moral or nonmoral. It is sometimes called agent-based or character ethics. It is you striving for excellence in what and how you do things in your life. (Boylan, 2009) DEONTOLOGY-this theory is about doing one’s duty of a particular action because that action is right and not because of any other calculations of the action such as what the consequences of the action might be. (Boylan, 2009) UTILTARIANISM-this theory is where you put the needs of the team before your own needs for the betterment of the team. Your actions are morally right because it produces a more total unity for the team. (Boylan, 2009) The similarities of each of these theories are that it involves how you act in your everyday life to follow what you believe to be the right thing to do. In all three theories your moral beliefs play a significant role. The difference would be the outcome of any particular situation in which you are involved in and how you come to the conclusion. With virtue ethics being about you character your goal is to strive for excellence whereas in deontology your goal is to perform your duty as other might...

...Ethics Essay ETH/316 May 21, 2014 University of Phoenix Ethics Essay This week's reading assignment covered many aspects of ethics. In this written assignment, we are asked to compare the similarities and differences between three types of ethical behavior, virtue, utilitarianism, and deontological ethics. To understand the three separate ethic behaviors, I must first define them. Virtue ethics deals with a person’s character, their inward behavior. If a person’s character is good, then so are his or her choices and actions. A person should always strive for excellence in everything that they do. Virtue ethics is not team-based; it’s all about the good of a particular person and how he or she think and act on a daily basis. An example of virtue ethics is, me being in line at the grocery store, the person ahead of me does not have enough money to complete his purchase, so I pay the difference to help him out. Utilitarianism ethics is different from virtue ethics because it promotes the greatest amount of good to a group. Utilitarianism is not individually based, it is more people based. Best described when a person sacrifices a little, in order to get more in return. A personal example of utilitarianism could be the time I was babysitting my niece and two nephews. Instead of me watching basketball on the television, I allowed them to watch a children’s movie in order to gain peace and quiet throughout the house. I gave up the television for the greater...

Team member Abe Castro chose to review the Tri-Valley YMCA and its focus on youth development. Team member Stephanie Phelps chose Alameda County Food Bank with its focus on hunger mitigation, nutrition and educational service. Kuldip Singh looked at The American Red Cross whose mission is to alleviate human suffering in the face of emergencies and natural disasters. Finally, team member Chuck Harris examined The Livermore Rotary Club which strives to provide comprehensive community enrichment through service and volunteer work. The following is a compilation of the team’s research and discovery. Within in the organization that targets different groups, they have similarities. One major similarity in the organization is the motivation to help the communication. Each organization do not discriminate whether young or old, rich or poor, white or black or tan each organization wants to help the community. Another similarity is each organization has programs to help any age group for example the rotary have a senior day were the members help senior citizens with their project at home. This is similar to YMCA where each member helps kids to young adults to understand life...

...The Responsibility Project Lorraine A. Garcia ETH/316 May 20, 2013 Glenn H. DeAtley, J.D. The Responsibility Project “The Home Team” is a great short film reflecting the team comradery of the Murray State Racers basketball team. This film reflects the coaches and players perspective, as well as, the community’s love of the game, players, and traditions. This is not only just an extra curriculum event for these people this is an event that brings out families across all areas in the city. They have had a very successful team over they years and when entering the gym and the many banners reflecting their championships are a reflection of that. One of the issues that was brought up in the field was that of the importance of the game. Restaurants and people reflecting the school colors, signs being changed to show the support that they have for the team and the town almost completely shutting down in order to attend home games were expressed and shown. These are sure signs that the support that they have for the team is huge. Being a small town, Murray thrives on talking and living and breathing basketball and it was actually stated on the film that it is what Murray, Kentucky on the map. The players spoke about how when they came into the school their freshman year they were treated as family from everyone and feel that everyone in the town are friends. Coach Steve Proham said that he witnessed that the players, as well as him, are in embraced as family...

...Ethics Essay Week 1 ETH/316 May 26, 2014 Ethics Essay Week 1 Ethics is important in today’s societies because it sets characteristics of doing right and wrong. It is a set of principles that helps determine what decisions or actions an individual carries out in day-to-day living. Three ethical theories to be discussed are: Virtue theory, Utilitarian theory, and Deontological theory. Virtue theory is based on the concept of what it means to be “good”. In Greek meaning, also referred to as “excellence”. Virtue theory is a character ethic with the viewpoint that ones lives their life to cultivate excellence in all that they do. This ethical theory can be moral and nonmoral. An example of nonmoral would be an athlete that strives to be the best in their sport. A moral would be a religious leader that lives his or her life by the rules of their religion. The problem with the virtue theory is others often judge people harshly if seen not living up to the goodness or excellence that they are supposed to be portraying. For example, President Clinton was reamed by the media and public when it became known that he was having an affair with an intern. Though he might have been doing his job well, he didn’t hold the ethic standards in the public opinion to be in the president position. Next theory discussed is Utilitarian, the concept of being a team player. Utilitarianism is putting the good of the team before their own good. This theory suggests that their actions produce...

...Ethics ETH/316 July 14, 2013 Michael Mc Neal Ethics There are many theories in existence that can be argued for or against whether they align with our cultural or personal values and morals. Virtue, utilitarianism, and deontology are three such theories that have some similarities and differences in the belief and thought process. All three theories are similar in the idea of doing what is right, but they may be for different motives and reasons. The virtue theory claims that actions should aim to the good, but it is not clear if the good is for one person, all people, or even for general society. According to Boylan (2009) “It takes the viewpoint that in living your life you should try to cultivate excellence in all that you do and all that others do” (Chapter 11). When I read this, it causes me to believe that I am responsible for the good that others do as well. The concepts of Utilitarianism are putting the team first or in other words acting like a team player. This theory states that an action is morally right when it produces a greater good for the whole team. In this idea, the group or team comes before our own good and in that case, there will be personal sacrifices. It is similar to virtue and deontology in the idea of doing good and making the right choice, but it differs in who will be affected by this decision. Looking at deontology, this differs from the other two through the idea that actions are based purely...
