There are values for the each of the four promising practices, these four practices are: peer delivered services, Cognitive Remediation (CR), Early Psychosis Intervention (EPI) programs, medical and illness management. Some of these practices value may be of more benefit when given in addition to an evidence based practice (EBP). Even EBPs have their shortcomings and may not be working as intended due to various reasons. Most importantly, the impact of inadequate training as it benefits or negatively impacts the outcomes.
Promising practices are valuable resource with potential to become a reliable staple for those with a serious mental illness (SMI). An undervalued asset is personal experience, as peer delivered services can be a resource and a sense of hope for those with SMI. The benefits of peer delivered services allows SMI to share in their experiences giving them better outlooks by helping them achieve a better quality of life while reducing their …show more content…
Individual Placement and Support (IPS) model is an EBP under SE practice and is backed with numerous evidence, however the SWAN study proved to have poorer outcomes (Latimer, 2010). SWAN study had three major problems: less contact, fidelity and adequate training. Contacts were not done often which could show a lack of support. If fidelity is not strictly adhered to, these EBPs can be made to look unreliable and not as effective (Latimer, 2010). The people giving this service in the SWAN study were volunteers who may have little to no training much less the experience dealing with people with SMI and their needs. If it is not delivered or comprised of the original structure, then it fails to be the practice and should be treated as an untried new practice (Latimer, 2010). There should be more testing with alternative names to help integrate some promising practices with EBPs, to expand and create more improved

Evidence Based Practice Essay

...Evidence-based practice in nursing means that nurses use the most recent research and apply it to their daily patient care. Such information is increasingly available, with Internet resources increasing not only in quality, but also in abundance. According to Hockenberry, Wilson & Barrera (2006), EBP has been implemented successfully in many institutions, despite those who criticize it as a fad. However, the authors also note that, despite its many advantages, certain elements need to be in place to ensure its success. Time, energy and financial resources will for example need to be allocated towards implementation. In addition, access to information must be readily available, and an administrative process of implementation needs to be in place. To ensure the smooth functioning of this process, leadership should be both unified and...

Evidence Based Practice Essay

...The definition of evidence-based practice (EBP) is “practice based on the best available evidence, patient preference, and clinical judgement.” (Schmidt & Brown, 2012, p. 480). Catheter associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI) are the most common hospital acquired infections in America. Only in certain cases are health care workers aloud to insert a foley catheter, and when they do, strict guidelines are used to prevent CAUT. This would include things like providing adequate fluid intake, avoiding bladder irritants, and cleaning the bladder two to three times a day and after every bowel movement. When left untreated, CAUTI can lead to things such as renal abscesses, epididymitis, periurethral glad infections, bacteremia, and possibly even death (Lewis et al., 2014, p. 1066). Although hospitals are required to pay for any medical attention and further hospital stay needed due to a CAUTI, this does not lessen the burden and pain it puts on the patient. The current best evidence used to prevent CAUTI was...

Evidence Based Nursing Practice Essay

...striving to achieve optimum overall outcomes and enhance the quality of care the nurse must be able to put knowledge into action. Therefore, all evidence-based nursing practices first began as theories. Nevertheless, Taylor (2007) explains nursing professors often find it difficult to translate didactic lecturing knowledge into clinical practice for the students (Chan et al., 2011, p. 1139). Nurses work in a complex setting and the scenarios are fluid at times. Moreover, the clinical setting may differ slightly from the information delivered in lecture and the textbook and applying nursing theories to practice presents a challenge for some students and instructors. However, application of nursing knowledge gained from the classroom to clinical instruction is a major focus of the student (Chan et al., 2011, p. 1047). Chan et al. (2011), believes that clinical instructors need more development with integrating the clinical practice, critical thinking skills and nursing process or problem-solving skills (p. 1047). There’s no one solution to caring for individuals with compromised health issues. According to Rich and Butts (2018), theory and practice are inseparable; they used an analogy of a human without a...

...Inquiry into health care Assignment 1 This essay aims to thoroughly examine the importance of evidence-based practice within the health care setting. The use of evidence-based practice as a practical framework to locate, appraise and apply the best research will further discussed throughout this essay. In addition this essay will explore how health care professionals can use the five steps of evidence based practice (EBP) as a practical framework to overcoming barriers to locating, appraising and applying the best research evidence in relation to Occupational Health and Safety (OHS). The use of hand washing in relation to infection control will be the OHS area explored. Evidence based practice is a framework that involves an expert finding experimental evidence concerning the value of or effectiveness of altered treatment options, the significance of this evidence is then established in relation to the patients situation (Liamputtong, 2010).Evidence Based Practice generates the need for clinically vital information regarding clinical and health care issues (Liamputtong, 2010). This clinically vital information is gathered by altering evidence into answerable questions, once this information is gathered the appraised information will be put into clinical practice and evaluated based on performance (Liamputtong, 2010). The importance of the five steps of Evidence Based Practice is consistent and conclusive. Before EBP, clinical knowledge was primarily relied on in areas...

However the use of reflective practice has made a shift to also be used in main stream educational practice. (Bradury et al. 2009) This then makes it credible to use reflective practice to assess my progress so far at university. I will do this by sing Driscoll model of reflection (by Barton) model of reflection that I undertook in class. Using Driscoll ‘What?’ ‘So what?’ Now what? Reflection model, along with headstart I identified potential weaknesses that could hinder my university study. Historical Prespective Theory Paper Nur/518

...Perspective Essay NUR/518 August 11, 2012 Historical Perspective Essay “Research is systematic inquiry that uses disciplined methods to answer questions or solve problems. The ultimate goal of research is to develop, refine, and expand knowledge (Burns & Grove, 2011) .” “Nursing research is systematic inquiry designed to develop trustworthy evidence about issues of importance to the nursing profession, including nursing practice, education, administration, and informatics (Polit & Tatano, 2012) .” Stetler’s Model of Research Utilization to Facilitate Evidence-Based Practice is a primary example of this. This model was developed by Stetler and Marram in 1976. Stetler then expanded the model in both 1994 and 2001 to promote evidence based practice in nursing. (Polit & Tatano, 2012) The model enhances the use of research evidence by nurses to promote evidence based practice. On a basic level this model can use the knowledge from the research to enhance or influence a nurse’s decisions or have an impact on educational programs and many other uses. Stetler’s 2001 model contains five phases. They are: preparation, validation, comparative evaluation/decision making, translation/application and evaluation. Stetler’s intention with the 2001 model was “to make using research evidence in practice a conscious, critical thinking process that is initiated by the user. (Polit & Tatano, 2012) ” Preparation determines the purpose of potential outcomes that can make evidence based change...

Critical Thinking

...Essays are an essential element of learning, particularly at an undergraduate level. With a well-written essay comes the power to change minds, to influence thinking and create new perspectives. When evaluating the claims presented by a source in an academic essay, a critical and reflective thinker does not simply accept arguments as ‘fact’. Nor do they create arguments based on innuendo and bias. This essay will contend that for students at university level to be taken seriously they must use critical and reflective thinking to write an effective academic essay. The following points will be addressed; what constitutes a credible essay, what is critical thinking and reflective practice, what is the importance of these skills in developing arguments, the benefits of thinking critically and reflectively, the use of critical reflective thinking in evaluating sources and the importance of recognizing those sources correctly for the work to be considered credible. So what constitutes a credible essay? The purpose of the essay is to forward knowledge, to tackle an already existing argument and build on it using sound evidence and research. “Essays are a document of your learning; they show proof of your understanding of the topic and your ability to communicate that understanding convincingly” (Germov 2011, 2). An essay must put forth an argument then break it down to prove or disprove the thesis. The statement needs to be dissected and the main points need to be analysed. What...

Reflective Essay in Yeaching

...This essay will discuss a clinical skill in which I have become competent in practicing. I will use a reflective model to discuss how I have achieved the necessary level of competence in my nurse training programme. The reflective model I have chosen to use is Gibbs model (Gibbs 1988). Gibbs model of reflection incorporates the following: description, feelings, evaluation, analysis, conclusion and an action plan (Gibbs 1988). The model will be applied to the essay to facilitate critical thought, relating theory to practice where the model allows. Discussion will include the knowledge underpinning practice and the evidence base for the clinical skill. A conclusion to the essay will then be given which will discuss my reflection skills, acknowledge my competence and show my personal and professional development. The clinical skill I have chosen to reflect on within this essay is the administration of Intramuscular (IM) injections. I have chosen this as within my first clinical placement this was a widely used method of drug administration and I became involved in the process of IM injections. I therefore researched the topic of IM injections and my knowledge within this area developed. The first stage of Gibbs (1988) model of reflection requires a description of events. I was asked to administer a drug to a patient via IM injection. I had observed this clinical skill on a variety of occasions and had previously administered an IM injection under supervision. On this occasion I...

Budget Management Analysis for Abc Hospital

...Historical Perspective Essay Rebecca Firmin NUR/518 May 21,2012 Vta Massey Historical Perspective Essay One significant event in nursing research which created greater awareness for the need of utilizing research in clinical practice was the establishment in 1986 of the National Center for Nursing Research by congressional mandate. A primary function of the Center for Nursing Research was promotion of research projects that related to patient care. In this period nurses began formal projects to help with research utilization in clinical practice to enhance patient outcomes. During this time factors outside of nursing helped shape nursing research also. A clinical learning strategy designed by McMaster Medical School in Canada called evidence-based medicine had a major effect on all health care professions and how physicians and nurses made clinical decisions. This learning strategy paved the way for nursing research to incorporate evidence-based practice into the daily clinical practices and enhance patient outcomes. Nursing research focused on improved patient-nurse relationships and improved patient outcomes, strategies that nurses could utilize at the bedside to enhance patient care. With use of this learning strategy nursing developed nursing strategies that were centered around nursing diagnosis and not on medical diagnosis to effect patient outcomes. Interventions that nursing could use that were nursing related and did not require a physician’s order to...

Evidence Based Practice in Nursing

...Title: Evidence Based Practice in Nursing Name Course Tutor April 20th, 2013 Introduction The paper herein provides a critical discussion of evidence based practice (EBP) in nursing. It clearly elaborates on the meaning and definition of EBP as used by nurses as well as the importance of evidence based decision making as it relates to nursing care. It broadly examines the concept of EBP in nursing care and its relevance to nursing practice and to the delivery of quality patient care. Subsequently, the essay will also expound on the broad research methods that are used in evidence based nursing and conclusively show how this evidence can be applied in day to day health care practice. The Definition and Importance of EBP Evidence based practice in nursing has wide and varied definitions among the nurses in practice and in academic centres. However, the most generally accepted definition is the integration of the best research evidence with clinical expertise and patient values (Sacket et al., 2000). Van, Schoonhoven & Grol (2008 at p. 382) while citing Sacket et al., (2000), define evidence based nursing as the conscientious, explicit and judicious use of current best evidence available in making decisions that are pertinent to the care of individual patients. It is the optimal use of the available research evidence in nursing (Van, Schoonhoven & Grol, 2008). In other literature, evidence based practice (EBP), in nursing has been defined to mean the...

...can led to bacterial resistance(Scholes et al., 2004). This essay will establish PICO (population, intervention, comparison and outcome) question in the given scenario where a 22 year old Susan visits the GP with symptoms of urinary frequency, dysuria, lower back pain and shivering. She was diagnosed with Urinary tract infection (hereby referred as UTI) and antibiotics were prescribed. However after developing thrush due to antibiotics for urinary tract infection previously, she is reluctant to take antibiotics. On surfing the internet she read about cranberry juice being used to treat UTI and is considering to stop her antibiotics. PICO question development In order to provide the right pathway to commence our research and ensuring that every questions are suitable and relevant, PICO model will be used which is Population, Intervention, Comparison and Outcome(Bronson and Davis, 2011). In the given scenario, population would be women suffering from UTI. Similarly intervention is using cranberry juice to prevent UTI and comparison is to use antibiotics. Richardson et al., 2014 mentioned that the outcome would analyze the effectiveness of the intervention. Therefore the outcome would be effectiveness of cranberry juice to prevent UTI. After this systematic approach, PICO question can be developed: Is cranberry juice more effective than antibiotics for the treatment of UTI in young women? Searching for evidence There are number of keywords to find the relevant article...

The Impact of Hrm on Organisational Performance

...Essay Title: ‘Assess the state of the evidence in favour of HRM’s impact on organisational performance. Do the supporters of HRM’s strategic contribution have enough of a case?’ Word Count: 3,105 Abstract The evidence in favor of HRM’s impact on organizational performance is growing, however some doubt has cast on these studies. Thus, this essay suggests that the evidence of HRM-performance linkage is weak because theoretical and methodological issues remain among most of these studies. So, this essay will mainly analyze theories concerning on HRM and firm performance relationships and methodological problems in empirical studies. As there are flaws in both theories and the process of studying the relationships, this essay concludes that the evidence in favor of HRM’s impact on organisatioanl performance is weak. It seems that it is better to pay more attention to the HRM’s theories and methodologies in order to further the understanding the correlation between HRM and firm performance. TABLE OF CONTENTS 1. ...Historical Perspective Historical Perspective Essay Leonie Taylor-Brown University of Phoenix Nur/518 Elizabeth Esterl August 19th ,2013 Florence Nightingale’s contribution to research and the development of nursing makes her undisputedly the mother of research, and evidence based nursing. There are several examples that show her evidence base framework, this essay will show her contribution to research and nursing development, and show the paradigm that Ms Nightingale hold. The science of nursing has evolved throughout the many decades since Florence Nightingale presented her first theory in 1859. She did not set out to write a theory but her work has influenced nursing practice for the past century and a half (George 2011).Her first focus and data collection was on the manipulation of the environment for the benefit of the patient, this focus continues through today with the prevention of hospital acquired infections such as Foley, CLABS, Pneumonia. With her research she was able to show data which corroborated that if certain environmental settings are not correct patients can have fatal outcomes as in the Crimean war and in the area of Maternal Mortality. Ms Nightingale documented her first concept of clean environment in her 1860 published notes. Through this work she laid the foundation for evidence based practice (Nightingale 1992). One of her most important contributions was to address the care from trained...
