Fresh out of high school, I didn’t choose to attend college like rest of classmates. “Why?” Friends asked me, out of concern and curiosity. Well, I had my reasons: Lack of stable income to pay for the tuition; Didn’t want to be caged in one place ; Unwillingness to accept the career path that parents had chosen for me; And partly because of those teenager hormones running through my veins, caused me to make irrational decisions. Long story short, I decided to join the US Navy for the opportunity to travel around the world, and receive GI bill to cover the college tuition. After four years of services, i realized how important it is to attend college, and obtain a degree. It is a military tradition for enlisted members to salute all commissioned officers, as a way to show them our utmost respect. “The only major difference between enlisted and commissioned office is a college degree. “ a young officer once shared his opinion with me,” a man who has great persistence and motivation in pursuit of higher education, deserves more respect than others who don’t.” In other words, graduating from college is probably the most efficient way to earn recognition and respect from current society. By doing so also put yourself into a higher level of playing field, allowing you to find better job position and higher salary. These external motivations have enlightened me as I pushed away reenlistment papers, and started to fill out college applications. As the author of passage mentioned, able to study subjects that interest you or have relation to your life can be great internal motivations to attend college. I was born and raised in a town where majority of people are talented and/or experienced, to make living by owning a business, whether it’s a small corner shop or large real estate corp. It is also my dream one day to become a CEO of my own company. With this goal
