Extreme Weather What is extreme weather? Extreme weather any type of extreme or severe weather. It is weather on a larger more serious and devastating scale. There are many different types of extreme weather like tornadoes, hurricanes floods, and many more. When there is an extreme weather phenomenon happens there is usually a high cost that comes with it not only economical but also personal. One type of extreme weather is hurricanes. Hurricanes are also known as typhoons and cyclones. It is a powerful rotating storm that involves thunder, lightning, and rain. Hurricanes are one of the most damaging and powerful forces there are among the other types of extreme weather. Hurricanes are a major hazard to buildings, people, and the environment. A hurricane has killed more people than any other storm there is. In order for a tropical storm to be classified as a hurricane its wind speed has to reach 74mph but usually reaches higher wind speed than that. Some examples of hurricanes over the last couple of years are hurricane Ivan and Katrina. Hurricane Ivan made its appearance on the gulf shores of Alabama. This hurricane started at 2:10am Thursday September 16 2004. Hurricanes Ivan’s strength was estimated to be around 130 mph which made it a category 3 hurricane. Ivan cost a lot of damages, it was estimated that there was around 123 fatalities and the cost damage it caused was estimated at $18 million making it the fifth costliest hurricane ever to strike the country. There was also hurricane Katrina which was in New Orleans are and Mississippi coast; it was one of the most devastating hurricanes in U.S. history. It is also one of the most deadly hurricanes to strike the U.S. since the hurricane of Palm Beach- Lake Okeechobee in September of 1928. The cost of damages hurricane Katrina made were estimated to be around $7 billion to $10 billion. It is the most expensive hurricane to hit the U.S. Hurricane Katrina was a category 3 hurricane that killed an estimated 2,000 people and affected about 90,000 square miles of the U.S. Another type of extreme weather is tornadoes also known as twisters. Tornadoes are also a dangerous type of extreme weather. Tornadoes can produce the strongest winds on earth close to 300mph. Tornadoes can last only a couple of second or even longer sometimes even hours they can move for miles across the land. They can occur anywhere in the world but their power and speed will vary based on the location. The U.S. is famous for the number of tornadoes it has each year which usually reaches the 1,000 mark. Several dozen are classified as strong or violent which means they have reached a speed of 200mph. The Mid-West around Oklahoma City is known as Tornado Alley because it sees more tornadoes than any other place on earth. Tornado damages vary and are determined by the Fujita Scale. The Fujita Scale is a scale for rating tornado intensity, based on the damage tornadoes inflict on human-built structures and vegetation. The scale goes from F0-F5. F0 has a wind speed of40-73 mph and it causes light damage, F1 has a wind speed of 74-112 mph and it causes moderate damage, F2 has a wind speed of 113-157 mph and its considerable damage, F3 has a wind speed of 158-206 mph and it causes severe damage, F4 has a wind speed of 207-260 mph and it causes devastating damage, and the final level is F5 with a wind speed of 261-318 mph and has incredible damage. One example of a tornado that has happened is the 1925 Tri-State Tornado on March 18, 1925 in Missouri. It is one of the most remembered tornadoes because it traveled 219 miles from Ellington, Missouri across the southern tip of Illinois to Princeton, Indiana. This tornado killed about 695 people and injuring 2,027. It hit the hardest in Southern Illinois where 540 people were killed and 1,423 were injured. It hit many places including Annapolis, Missouri, Gorham, and Parrish, Illinois and Indiana they were left in a state of near or complete devastation. The third extreme weather that I am going to talk about is floods. Floods can be defined as any area of land covered by water which is normally dry. When it comes to floods the most important factor is rain. There are two types of floods there is river floods and flash floods. River floods form slowly normally because of melting winter snow or when there is a very wet season. It is when smaller streams eventually join larger rivers making the water power become grater. It can cause disruption for weeks on end washing away vehicles and roads and possibly destroying buildings. The other flood is flash floods. A flash flood is more dangerous than a river flood. A flash flood can happen very quickly it is usually caused by larger amount of water that comes from heavy rain fall. One example of a flood that has happen is the Big Thompson Canyon Flood of 1976 in Denver, Colorado. During this flood eight inches of rain fell in one hour. The water from the river rose at a very fast pace and went over the banks, the resident and visitors in the area had no idea that they were in the path of a raging flood waters. In two hours the flood created over $30 million in property damage and killed about 139 people. Another big flood that happened was the Mississippi River Flood of 1993 which began at Lake Itasca in Minnesota and flowed down south about 2,000 miles or more to the Gulf of Mexico. This flood cause 70,000 people were displaced by the flood, 50,000 homes were damaged or destroyed, and 52 people died. Damage was estimated between $15-20 billion. In conclusion, extreme weather events are very dangerous not only to people but also to the environment and buildings/ structures. There are many types of extreme weather that can occur and they are all different but also have the same effect at the end. They will cost the environment and you a lot of money and work to get back what they have lost. It is always better to be as prepared as you can if you live in an area where any of this extreme weather can occur.

Why Is Extreme Weather Difficult to Define?

...Why is extreme Weather difficult to define? Extreme weather is difficult to define because it is different for every area due to varied outlooks of the definition of “Extreme”. An area deems a type of weather extreme when it drastically shis from the weather norms, e.g. A location such as the North Pole would snow heavily, however is a common occurrence for the natives who are used to such weather. Heavy snow would be described extreme in an area such as California, or an area with more extreme heat like the desert (as it would be highly unusual for the weather to experience cold, much less having the onslaught of snow due to the hot temperatures during the year). The frequency at which certain types of weather happen, leads to how weather is perceived in that area, e.g. If heavy rainfall became common instead of rare, the weather would eventually be seen as “Regular weather,” despite being once seen as “extreme.”This makes it difficult to define because the ideas constantly change. The diagram also shows another reason why the concept of extreme weather is difficult to define, the reason being that the weather only rarely strides from the norm and even then, it is unpredictable and shows rarely any sign of impending extreme weather. There is no obvious pattern, and the graph shows this as there is only one time when the weather fluctuates so extremely. It rises above average only twice, reflecting...

Science Extreme Weather Unit

...Extreme Weather Unit Abstract This unit will study extreme weather on Earth but more specifically Mars and Venus. In the first steps it outlines the summary of this unit. The steps that the students have to take in studying these planets are outlined in the objectives. There are three cognitive objectives, one psychomotor, and one affective objective. The students will take this new knowledge of these planets and have to compare and contrast it with each other as well as weather on Earth. They will then have to assemble their own measuring tool for Mars or Venus and then have to defend their tool as the last step in this unit. As the students go through this unit they will be going through the levels of Bloom’s Taxonomy. They will start in the knowledge category as they start off describing weather but will finish in the evaluating category with their final creation presenting and defending why their tool would work on Mars or Venus. By taking these steps, utilizing back ground knowledge, and being able to create and make a measuring tool this would be a great lesson to add to any weather unit that is hands-on and engaging. Extreme Weather Unit Studying extreme weather on other planets is a very engaging lesson to teach to grades 2-5. It gives the students’ knowledge on weather that we experience on Earth and makes them think beyond that to our whole solar system. They will also be challenged to create their own measuring tools to use on other planets in the solar...

...Bangladesh is the ninth largest country in the world by population (164.4 million people) and is one of the most densely populated. Almost half of its 164.4 million people live on less than US$1.25 a day (World Bank, 2005) and 80% on less than US$2.00 a day (DFID, 2011). The size and density of the population, together with regular extreme weather events, such as floods and cyclones, make the country extremely vulnerable to natural hazards becoming natural disasters. During the last ten years, 12 major natural disasters have impacted upon millions of people in Bangladesh, including floods in 2004, which affected 36 million people, and Cyclone Sidr in 2007, which affected over nine million people. Since 2000, US$430 million has been raised for disaster response with over half of it allocated to the humanitarian operation following Cyclone Sidr. Aside from a history of natural disasters, an estimated 300,000 refugees of the Muslim minority Rohinga ethnic group have fled from neighbouring Myanmar since being stripped of their citizenship in 1982, and are now resident in Bangladesh. Tens of thousands live in official and informal refugee settlements, while a far larger number live as ‘illegal economic migrants’ throughout Bangladesh. The Rohinga refugee crisis is often considered a ‘forgotten’ crisis. The frequency of disasters has prompted a strong domestic capacity working to prevent...

...hard measuring devices with soft knowledge and skills that can raise awareness and stimulate appropriate action. Many of these technologies are already available and widely used. The global climate system has always confronted human societies with extreme weather events and in many respects future climate change will simply exacerbate these events, altering their scale, duration or intensity. Thus it should be possible to adapt to some extent by modifying or extending existing technologies. These may date back hundreds of years. Local communities have, for example, used traditional technologies to cope with regular flooding by building houses on stilts, and many communities continue to do so, even if they use more modern materials such as concrete pillars or corrugated iron roofs. Other technologies might be considered “modern”, dating from the industrial revolution in the late eighteenth century. Farmers have taken advantage of technological advances to cope better with arid environments, introducing new crop hybrids and making better use of scarce water, as with systems of drip irrigation. Nowadays human societies can also take advantage of “high” technologies such as earth observation systems that can provide more accurate weather forecasts, or crops that are based on genetically modified organisms. Finally too, people can...

Moroccan Drought

...Moroccan Drought It won’t rain. Their hopes for a rainy season have faded away. Crops have died and livestock are starving. Even if it rains now, it will not make much of a difference. The country of Morocco has been experiencing severe drought for several decades now. The drought has considerable negative impacts on the economy and people of Morocco in terms of crop production losses, reduction in GDP, and loss of livelihood. The drought has also demonstrated itself as a major obstacle for agriculture and food security in the country. Morocco, whose economy depends largely on agricultural production, is greatly threatened by the drought. Agriculture is Morocco’s main economic activity, contributing almost half to the country’s GDP. With several indications suggesting the drought is not close to an end, wouldn’t it be crucial for policymakers to take hold of the implications of the droughts, especially for the most vulnerable in society, such as the poor, small-scale farmers, and the poorer urban households? In the article “Climate change, vulnerability and adaptability in North Africa with a focus on Morocco” (Janpeter, Korbinian, Elke, Jürgen, 2012), studied the environmental impacts of climate change to major economic and agricultural developments in North America. The article openly states that climate change will likely have the strongest effect on Morocco. The combination of decreasing supply and strong population growth aggravates the stressed water situation in the...

What Is the Effect of Climate Change to the Increase and Decrese of Labor Force?

...Climate Change is a long-term shift in the statistics of the weather affecting production and consumption patterns. [1] Today, we are living in a globalized world where huge changes in production and consumption patterns have dramatically affected not only the economy and the environment, but also our social conditions. [2] Changes in the climate will have an enormous impact on employment and the labor market in general. First, over 1 billion people are employed in the agricultural sector which is the second greatest source of employment worldwide after services. It is clear that climate changes such as extreme weather events, increased incidence of droughts and floods, variability in rainfall patterns, and degradation of lands will have an influence on the agricultural sector. With this, many millions of people working in the agricultural sector will have to face change in the way crops are produced or even look for new pastures elsewhere. The agricultural sector will decrease in size because of the negative effects of climate change. Nowadays, typhoons come and go and so is true with the scorching heat. These extremes damage plantations. This is the time where we are already getting too much of what we wanted. Gone are the days where there is enough rainfall, average temperature, and nice environment. Climate change upsets farmers because most of their crops are wrecked by typhoons and the increasing temperature. With that, there is a tendency that the number of farmers...

Top Hot to Handle

...warming, the issue being faced in the video “Too Hot Not to Handle.” Although the average person can only sense small changes occurring scientists can see a whole new world then the one we have now due to global warming. The weather is getting warmer, the glaciers are melting, and plants and animals are changing, all direct causes of global warming. This major issue is happening right now, everyday. One major aspect coming directly out of global warming is the increase in heat waves. The video states that over the last 50 years the amounts of heat waves that have lasted for over four days have since then tripled. The amount of human deaths associated with heat waves is greater than the number of deaths caused by hurricanes, tornadoes, lightning, and blizzards combined. Heavy population can survive 1-3 days of extremely hot weather, but the 1995 Chicago heat wave lasted a week with a temperature of 106 degrees killing 800 people in a short period of time. The 2003 heat wave in Europe killed a devastatingly even greater amount, over 6000 in Germany, over 14000 in France, and over 19,000 in Italy. If global warming continues at this accelerated pace then the heat waves will worsen, it is predicted that by 2020 they will double. Extreme weather is yet another cause of global warming, for example, if the ocean is heating up then that causes more evaporation, which leads to more rain. Due to this what is happening in the US is that the common yearly rain is decreasing...

However, they were aware of the benefits that are associated with aerobics. The other friend who attended aerobics classes for an average of three to four classes per week argued that extreme weather conditions such as cold weather contributed to his absenteeism from aerobics. However, he agreed that aerobics helped him to alleviate stress and made him remain healthy and rejuvenated. II. Discussion The debate on whether global warming is fact or fiction is in fact a debate on what exact factors have contributed to the apparent acceleration in the melting of glaciers and the rapid and seemingly unexplained changes in weather.
