This manifestation of the Hero archetype seems to be common, and even appears in human civilization’s oldest-known work of literature, The Epic of Gilgamesh. In this story, Gilgamesh is clearly the Hero figure—his demigod status allows him great strength, and his exploits are the focal point of the narrative. Gilgamesh, however, is not the perfect being; his insatiable hunger for power, money, and land has led to the deaths of many common folk in his city. In The Epic of Gilgamesh, a young female would be considered insignificant to the storyline; however, in both of the recent films Pan’s Labyrinth and Spirited Away, naïve, innocent, ordinary young females are powerful representations of morality and virtue and ultimately embody the Hero archetype. Ophelia, in Pan’s Labyrinth, while seemingly powerless in her environment, embarks on a personal quest to return to what she considers her real home, a dream-like kingdom below the ground. Throughout the storyline, she is taken advantage of by various foil characters such as Captain Vidal whose evil nature lies in stark contrast to Ophelia’s inherent innocence and righteousness.
